1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsNeither is universally better. Choose a dedicated noise machine when unpredictable sounds—traffic, aircraft, pets, or a bed partner—are waking you. Choose a sleep app when you specifically want phone-based audio or other consumer sleep features and accept that app accuracy and treatment claims vary. Neither option is an established treatment for chronic insomnia; adults with chronic insomnia should look to evidence-based cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) and clinical evaluation.
The short answer: match the tool to the problem
A noise machine and a sleep app solve different practical problems. A machine produces a steady or looping sound from a device whose main job is to mask intermittent bedroom noise. A sleep app uses a phone or tablet to play audio and may add features such as timers, sleep logs, or sensor-based estimates. The category label alone does not tell you which will improve your sleep.

If a passing vehicle, barking dog, aircraft, hallway noise, or a partner’s movements repeatedly pulls you out of sleep, masking is the relevant strategy. The CDC’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) says that “Noise from traffic, jets, pets, and bed partners can disturb sleep” and suggests earplugs or a fan or “white noise” machine to camouflage other noises. CDC/NIOSH sleep-environment guidance (last reviewed March 31, 2020) does not present a machine as a cure for insomnia; it presents masking as one way to reduce an environmental disturbance.

However, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) warns that consumer sleep technologies are not uniformly validated against clinical standards and that sleep apps infrequently use empirical evidence or national guidelines. That warning applies to claims about tracking, diagnosis, and treatment—not merely to the act of playing a sound file.

The sources available for this comparison do not establish a direct head-to-head winner between machines and apps. Treat the decision as a fit question: Do I need to camouflage environmental noise, or do I want phone-based sound and optional sleep features?
What a dedicated noise machine actually does
Its main job is sound masking
A dedicated machine places a continuous or repeating sound source in the bedroom. The purpose is to make sudden external sounds less noticeable by adding a predictable background layer. CDC/NIOSH specifically names a fan or white-noise machine as an option for camouflaging other noises. Earplugs are the lower-tech alternative named in the same guidance.
Masking is an environmental coping strategy. It does not remove the source of the disturbance, prove that sleep quality will improve for every person, or diagnose why you are waking. If the room is quiet and your difficulty is persistent insomnia rather than unpredictable noise, a machine may not address the central problem.
Why a machine can be practical
- Dedicated operation: It can play without tying up your phone, notifications, calls, or charging cable.
- Simple controls: A physical control can be easier to adjust at night than unlocking a bright screen.
- Placement flexibility: You can position the unit between the bed and the disturbance or elsewhere in the room, depending on what feels comfortable.
- Predictable purpose: The device is designed around sound output rather than sleep scoring or health claims.
Those are practical advantages, not clinical outcome guarantees. The available evidence supports masking as an option for disruptive noise, not a universal treatment for sleep problems.
What to check before buying
Use the following as selection criteria rather than as evidence that one specification improves sleep:
- Sound choices: Check whether the available sounds suit the disturbance you are trying to camouflage.
- Adjustable volume: You should be able to set a level that masks the disturbance without becoming an unwanted new distraction.
- Timer or continuous play: Decide whether you want sound only while falling asleep or throughout the night.
- Controls: Look for buttons or settings you can operate without repeatedly checking a bright phone screen.
- Placement: A compact design and a long enough power lead can make it easier to keep the unit away from the pillow while still addressing the noise path.
These features describe usability. They are not laboratory-tested performance claims, and no specific model is established here as superior.
What a sleep app adds—and where its evidence is weaker
Audio playback from a device you already own
A sleep app can play white noise, nature sounds, music, spoken content, or other audio through a phone or tablet. This may be the lowest-friction way to try masking if you already have suitable audio and a place to keep the device. The trade-off is that the phone remains part of the sleep environment: notifications, calls, screen light, battery limits, and accidental interruptions can matter unless you configure the device deliberately.

Tracking and “smart” features are separate claims
Many apps present sleep durations, stages, readiness scores, coaching, or recommendations. These features should not be treated as interchangeable with audio playback. The AASM’s position statement explains that consumer sleep technologies commonly lack validation and says that, given the lack of validation and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance, they cannot be used for diagnosis or treatment of sleep disorders at this time. Read the statement in full at the AASM consumer sleep technology position statement, published May 15, 2018.
That does not mean every app feature is useless. It means you should distinguish a convenience feature from a medically validated measurement or intervention. An app that plays a sound is making a different, narrower promise than an app that claims to identify a disorder or treat one.
Questions to ask about an app
- Is the feature you want audio playback, a timer, a diary, or a health claim?
- Can you disable notifications and prevent calls from interrupting playback?
- Does it support continuous play or an automatic stop at the time you prefer?
- Are tracking results presented as estimates, or as if they were clinical measurements?
- Does the developer explain what evidence supports a recommendation or score?
- Can you use it without staring at a screen when you are trying to sleep?
Availability, pricing, privacy terms, and app features change frequently. Check the current listing and privacy policy before relying on a particular app.
Evidence: what is established and what is not
What official guidance supports
CDC/NIOSH supports the use of earplugs or a fan or white-noise machine to camouflage disruptive bedroom noise. The guidance is about creating a better sleep environment, not proving that every listener benefits from every sound or volume.

What has not been established here
No comparative outcome statistic in the cited sources shows that a machine produces more sleep, fewer awakenings, or better daytime function than an app. There is also no universal success rate for either category in the evidence available for this article. Do not infer a percentage, a guaranteed sleep-duration gain, or a clinical advantage from the existence of a feature list.
The absence of a direct comparison in these sources is a limitation of the available evidence, not proof that no comparative study exists anywhere. It does mean that a confident “machines are better” or “apps are better” verdict would go beyond what these sources support.

Pick a machine first when the noise is irregular
A dedicated machine is the clearer first experiment when the problem is an unpredictable sound: a truck that passes at night, a neighbor’s activity, a pet, aircraft, or a partner’s movement. The goal is not to “treat” sleep; it is to make the contrast between a quiet room and a sudden noise less disruptive. A fan can serve the same masking role if you already have one and its airflow is comfortable.
Pick an app first when convenience or software is the point
An app is reasonable when you want to try audio immediately, prefer not to buy another device, or specifically want a timer or other phone-based function. Keep the scope narrow: use the audio as audio, and regard any sleep score or recommendation as a consumer estimate unless strong independent validation is provided.
Consider neither as the first answer when symptoms suggest a disorder
Loud snoring with breathing pauses, persistent severe daytime sleepiness, distressing nighttime symptoms, or insomnia that continues despite addressing the environment warrants medical attention rather than escalating sound tracks or tracking features. Consumer technology should not delay evaluation when a sleep disorder is suspected.
How to try a noise machine safely and systematically
1. Name the noise and its timing
For several nights, identify whether awakenings follow a recurring source, a random event, or no identifiable sound. Note the approximate time and whether the sound is outside the room, inside it, or generated by a bed partner. This observation tells you whether masking is a plausible experiment.
2. Place the device deliberately
Start with the machine between you and the disturbance or at another location that produces an even background in the room. Keep it stable and away from bedding that could obstruct it. The exact best position depends on the room and the listener; there is no placement distance established by the cited guidance.
3. Set the lowest comfortable masking level
Increase the volume only enough to reduce the prominence of the target noise. If the machine itself becomes attention-grabbing, lower it, change the sound, or move the unit. The aim is a tolerable background, not maximum loudness.
4. Decide between a timer and continuous play
Use a timer if you need sound only while falling asleep. Use continuous play if awakenings occur later in the night and the changing sound environment is the issue. Compare like with like across several nights instead of judging one brief trial.

Record whether the target noise woke you, whether the machine disturbed you, and how you felt the next day. Do not turn the record into a medical diagnosis. It is a practical way to decide whether masking is helping your specific environment.
How to try a sleep app without letting the phone undermine sleep
1. Configure the device before bedtime
Choose the audio and timer while you are still awake. Enable a do-not-disturb mode or equivalent setting, silence nonessential alerts, and make sure the device has enough battery or reliable power. Place it where you can hear the sound without needing to hold it or keep the screen visible.

First test the app as a playback tool. If you later enable tracking, treat the results as estimates and ask whether seeing a score changes your behavior or increases worry. A more elaborate dashboard is not automatically a more accurate measurement.
3. Check what happens overnight
Verify that the audio does not stop unexpectedly, that an incoming call cannot interrupt it, and that the phone does not become hot or run out of power. If the app requires the screen to remain on, reduce brightness and place the display out of your line of sight.
4. Remove features that do not help
Disable coaching, reminders, or scores that make you monitor sleep anxiously. Keep only the function that serves your goal. An app can be a simple sound player; you do not have to adopt every feature it offers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When masking is not enough: chronic insomnia and clinical care
Environmental noise and chronic insomnia are different problems. A machine may camouflage a truck or barking dog, but it does not address the cognitive, behavioral, or medical factors that can maintain insomnia after the room is quiet.
For adults with chronic insomnia, the AASM clinical practice guideline supports multicomponent CBT-I. The guideline, published February 1, 2021, is available at the AASM behavioral and psychological treatment guideline. CBT-I is a structured treatment delivered through components such as sleep-related behavioral and cognitive strategies; it is not the same intervention as playing background sound.

Seek clinical evaluation when sleep difficulty is persistent, causes meaningful daytime impairment, or comes with symptoms suggesting another sleep or medical disorder. Bring any app reports as optional observations, not as a diagnosis. The AASM position statement specifically calls for medical evaluation when a disorder is suspected and rejects unvalidated consumer technology as a diagnostic or treatment substitute.
Can you use both?
Yes, but combining them does not create evidence that either one treats insomnia. You might use a dedicated machine for unpredictable environmental noise and an app for a short relaxation track or a timer. In that arrangement, identify which tool serves which purpose and remove the one that adds complexity without helping.
A phone can also play masking audio while a separate machine remains available as a backup. The practical risk is competing sounds: two independent loops can be distracting, and troubleshooting becomes harder. Test one sound source at a time before adding another.

Troubleshooting common failures
The external noise still wakes you
- Reassess whether the machine or phone is positioned to create an even background where you sleep.
- Try a different sound that is less noticeable to you.
- Check whether a timer is stopping playback before the disturbance usually occurs.
- Consider earplugs, which CDC/NIOSH also lists as an option, if they are comfortable and appropriate for you.
The masking sound keeps you awake
- Lower the volume and move the source farther from the bed.
- Use a less attention-grabbing sound or a timer.
- With an app, remove notifications and put the screen out of sight.
- With a machine, simplify the settings instead of cycling through many sounds at bedtime.
The app’s sleep score makes you anxious
Stop using the score while retaining playback, or discontinue the app. The AASM’s concerns about validation mean a consumer estimate should not be treated as a clinical measurement. If the data are driving worry or repeated checking, they are undermining the purpose of the tool.
You continue to sleep poorly in a quiet room
Do not keep escalating volume, buying more sound devices, or adding more tracking features as a substitute for evaluation. Persistent insomnia calls for an evidence-based treatment discussion, including CBT-I, rather than a stronger version of the same environmental experiment.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify the trigger: Is an intermittent external sound the reason you wake?
- Start with the least complicated tool: A fan, earplugs, a dedicated machine, or phone audio can each be a reasonable experiment depending on your situation.
- Keep the claim narrow: You are testing masking or convenience, not diagnosing or treating a sleep disorder.
- Prefer controllability: Adjustable volume, reliable playback, a useful timer, and easy placement matter more than a long feature list.
- Protect the bedroom from the device: Prevent alerts, avoid unnecessary screen exposure, and do not let troubleshooting become a nightly activity.
- Review the result by daytime function and nighttime disturbance: Decide whether the target noise is less disruptive and whether the tool itself is tolerable.
- Escalate appropriately: If sleep remains persistently impaired or symptoms suggest a disorder, seek clinical evaluation and ask about CBT-I.
Bottom line
Choose a white-noise machine when your main problem is irregular environmental noise and you want a dedicated, controllable masking source. Choose a sleep app when phone-based audio or a specific software feature is more important and you can keep its tracking claims in perspective. Neither category has been shown by the cited sources to be universally superior, and neither replaces evaluation or CBT-I for chronic insomnia.
