Node.js Health Monitoring API: Design Uptime Checks and Rollback Evidence

A Node.js health API is useful only when each signal has a clear job. Liveness asks whether a process should keep running; readiness asks whether it should receive traffic; dependency checks reveal degraded components; and an external uptime check tests whether users can reach a meaningful service path. Record those observations alongside deployment identity and rollout stage if they may trigger a rollback.

What should a Node.js health check tell you?

“Is my health check endpoint good enough?” has no single answer. A check that is sufficient to detect a crashed process may say little about database availability or whether an outside user can complete a request. Choose the check by the decision it supports, then make its route, response, and configured probe behavior agree.

  • Process liveness: Is this process functioning well enough to continue, or might restarting it help?
  • Readiness: Should this instance receive new traffic right now?
  • Dependency health: Which required services or resources are degraded?
  • External availability: Can an observer outside the process reach a meaningful service path?
  • Deployment health: Does the rollout meet its recorded health predicates, or should it stop or roll back?

These signals can coexist, but they are not interchangeable. A single Boolean response often hides which failure boundary was checked and what action should follow.

How do liveness and readiness differ?

Liveness: decide whether a restart could help

A liveness probe is meant to identify a process that is no longer making useful progress. Its failure can cause an orchestrator to restart that process, depending on configuration. Avoid failing liveness automatically because a shared database, cache, or other dependency is unavailable: restarting every affected instance may not repair the dependency and can add restart load.

Readiness: decide whether to route traffic

A readiness probe indicates whether an instance should receive new traffic. A failed readiness check can remove an instance from service without asserting that it should be restarted. What counts as ready depends on the service architecture and the routing or orchestration configuration.

The Node.js Reference Architecture uses /livez and /readyz as clear route examples and recommends a successful 200/OK response. The names are conventions, not a universal required schema; the important thing is that the application routes and probe configuration express the same roles. See the Node.js Reference Architecture health-check guidance.

What belongs in an endpoint response?

Keep the response aligned with its consumer. A probe used for routing or restart decisions should be simple and predictable. A diagnostic endpoint can expose component-level detail for operators or monitoring, but a degraded component does not always mean the whole instance must stop serving.

NestJS Terminus documents indicators for HTTP, database and ORM, microservices, memory, and disk. Its documented degraded-cache example can remain HTTP 200 while still being visible to monitoring. That illustrates a useful distinction: report a degradation without necessarily converting it into an availability failure. Decide explicitly whether each dependency is essential to serving the route and whether its failure should affect readiness, liveness, an alert, or only diagnostics. Terminus documentation describes its HealthCheckService and predefined indicators: NestJS Terminus.

For Kubernetes-oriented Node.js services, Lightship documents separate /health, /live, and /ready responses, as well as graceful shutdown behavior. Its routes and defaults are package-specific; check the current documentation and configuration rather than assuming a particular behavior: Lightship documentation.

How should probes be configured?

Use route names that clearly communicate their configured role, and make sure probes target the application server’s port. Probe intervals and startup delays need to allow the service to start and recover normally; overly aggressive intervals or a startup allowance that is too short can create misleading failures. Exact values depend on startup time, recovery behavior, and orchestrator configuration, so there is no one interval or delay that fits every Node.js service.

  1. Define the consequence first. Decide whether a failed check should restart a process, remove an instance from traffic, alert an operator, or contribute to a deployment decision.
  2. Assign a route to that role. For example, use distinct routes such as /livez and /readyz, or another clearly understood pair.
  3. Align probe and application settings. Configure the probe to call the intended route on the application’s server port, with startup and interval behavior appropriate to the service.
  4. Choose dependency policy deliberately. Include a dependency in readiness only if its failure means the instance should not receive traffic; do not make it a liveness failure merely because it is unavailable.
  5. Check the observed result against the intended action. A route response, monitoring view, and orchestrator response should not disagree about what a failing check means.

Why add an external uptime check?

An in-process response shows what the application process reports; it does not establish that an outside user can reach and use a meaningful service path. When availability beyond the process or cluster matters, an external check can observe a route from a separate location. Treat it as a complementary signal, not a replacement for liveness or readiness.

Choose the tested route, monitoring location, authentication behavior, and alert threshold to match the service’s real user path. A shallow route may prove that a server answered while missing failures in a meaningful request flow. External checks also answer a different question from deployment probes, so their result should not be used as a restart trigger without a deliberate policy.

What makes deployment health evidence safe to use for rollback?

A rollback decision is only as interpretable as the evidence behind it. Preserve the observation, the threshold or predicate applied to it, and the rollout context so an operator can reconstruct what the system saw and why it acted.

A practical deployment-health record can include:

  • Service and environment
  • Deployment or release identifier and revision
  • Rollout stage
  • Check name and scope, such as liveness, readiness, dependency, or external route
  • Observation window and timestamp
  • Measured value and applicable threshold or workflow predicate
  • Result and action taken, such as continue, pause, alert, or roll back

This is a proposed design, not a mandated schema. Keep enough context to distinguish one deployment from another and to understand whether a metric belongs to the current stage or a prior release.

A 2026 Meta experience report describes a Service Health Checker that combines templated metric queries, thresholds, and workflow predicates with tiered, phased rollouts, allowing regressions to trigger automatic rollback. The report discusses noise, alert fatigue, drift, and regressions that checks may not cover; it does not establish a universal reliability guarantee or a quantified rollback outcome. Treat it as an example of an organizational approach, not a standard every service must adopt: Meta’s 2026 Service Health Checker report.

When should a status API be separate from health probes?

A health probe is typically a narrow operational signal. A public status API can instead present a broader record of service state, incidents, updates, and scheduled maintenance. Node.js Status documents summary information, component states, incidents and their updates, and scheduled maintenance. Its incident labels include Investigating, Identified, Monitoring, Resolved, and Postmortem; maintenance labels include Scheduled, In Progress, Verifying, and Completed. Those are that status-page API’s categories, not required application health states. See the Node.js Status API.

How to choose an implementation approach

Approach Primary failure boundary Typical decision Key limitation
Separate liveness and readiness routes Process viability and traffic eligibility Restart or remove from traffic, according to probe configuration Does not by itself test the outside user path
NestJS Terminus indicators Framework-integrated dependencies and resources Expose diagnostic or health information to monitoring Dependency degradation needs an explicit policy; visibility need not imply HTTP failure
Lightship Node.js lifecycle and Kubernetes-oriented health routes Report health, liveness, readiness, and graceful shutdown behavior Routes and defaults depend on current package documentation and configuration
External uptime check Reachability from an observer outside the process or cluster Alert on availability of a selected user-facing route Its route, location, authentication, and threshold determine what it can detect
Deployment health workflow Release and rollout performance against defined predicates Continue, pause, alert, or roll back a deployment Unrecorded context and uncovered regressions limit how safely results can be interpreted

These approaches serve different operational layers rather than competing as interchangeable packages. Combine them only where each contributes a distinct signal or action.
