Keep both signals free of customer identifiers, define a narrow monitoring-data contract, and calculate costs by counting checks and the other monitoring resources you use. DigitalOcean lists Uptime at $1 per check per month, with one free check per month, as verified July 13, 2026; that is a provider-specific price, not an industry rate.
What does a checkout uptime check actually prove?
“Uptime” can describe several different tests. A green result only proves that the configured test passed; it does not automatically prove that a customer can complete checkout.

| Signal | What it can establish | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Public uptime check | A configured endpoint responded from the probe locations and met the selected response criteria. | That JavaScript ran, a user authenticated, or a full checkout completed. Google Cloud public uptime checks do not execute JavaScript and do not include authentication by default (Google Cloud uptime checks). |
| Readiness check | The application’s selected critical dependencies, such as a database, are reachable within the check’s limits. | That every dependency is healthy, that the whole purchase journey works, or that a real transaction will succeed. |
| Synthetic checkout | A designed, repeatable multi-step flow can test user-facing behavior across the parts it exercises. | That every customer, payment method, region, or checkout variation will work. |
Google Cloud’s synthetic monitoring can model richer workflows than a basic public endpoint check; the specific coverage depends on the test design and runner (Google Cloud synthetic monitoring). A synthetic transaction is still a representative test, not proof that all real transactions succeed.

Start with the smallest set that answers distinct operational questions. A public probe can catch an unreachable service or an unexpected HTTP response. A readiness check can catch a service that responds but cannot reach a critical dependency. Add a synthetic journey if checkout failures can occur between those checks—for example, in browser-side behavior or a sequence of application steps.
#1 Best Overall
- Liveness: Is the process running and able to respond? Keep this check cheap and avoid making it fail merely because an optional dependency is unavailable.
- Readiness: Should the service receive work right now? Check only dependencies whose failure makes the service unable to do its job, and bound each dependency check with a timeout.
- Checkout synthetic: Can an isolated test identity follow the selected representative purchase path? Use test-mode integrations where available, keep test data distinct from production customer data, and define how test transactions are cleaned up.
NestJS Terminus documents database pings, attempt timeouts, and caching for health checks (NestJS health checks). A timeout prevents a slow dependency check from hanging the health response; caching reduces how often the underlying check runs, but also means a response may reflect a cached result rather than a fresh dependency probe. Select the cache interval with that trade-off in mind.
Define a narrow monitoring API contract
For a Node.js service, make the monitoring interface intentionally smaller than the application’s business-event model. A health endpoint should return the minimum status needed by its caller. If the application reports monitoring events to a separate receiver, accept a fixed schema rather than arbitrary payloads. Example route names such as /health/live, /health/ready, and /internal/monitoring-events are design examples, not framework requirements.
| Dimension | Good monitoring value | Keep out of the contract |
|---|---|---|
| Time | Timestamp or time bucket needed to order and analyze events. | Unnecessary high-resolution detail if it adds no operational value. |
| Service and environment | Closed values such as checkout-api and production. |
Free-form text that can accidentally include names, order details, or request contents. |
| Outcome | A small enumerated class such as ok, timeout, or dependency_unavailable. |
Raw exception messages, SQL, request bodies, or dependency responses. |
| Correlation | An intentionally designed opaque token, only when correlation is necessary and its use and retention are controlled. | Order IDs, email addresses, account IDs, session tokens, payment details, or a customer-derived identifier disguised as a trace value. |
Validate a closed schema, reject unknown fields, cap request-body size, and authenticate any write endpoint. Do not add a catch-all metadata object: it can quietly become a channel for order IDs, personal data, or raw errors. Return an acknowledgement or a generic status rather than echoing the submitted event. The source article illustrates this contract principle with a Go receiver alongside a Node.js application; the language split is an example, not a requirement to use Go (source article).
Trace every data path, not just the monitor vendor
A monitoring design has multiple boundaries. Review the fields that cross each one, where they are processed and retained, which people or systems can query them, and how deletion or export works. A vendor’s product label alone does not answer those questions.
- Probe to application: A public probe necessarily makes a request and receives a response. Avoid putting personal data in the URL, query string, headers, or response body. Decide whether probe logs on your side need full IP addresses or detailed request data.
- Synthetic runner to checkout: Use dedicated test identities and test-mode payment integrations where available. Keep scripts, credentials, test transactions, and cleanup behavior separate from customer records.
- Application to telemetry backend: Inspect log, metric, trace, and instrumentation exporters. Node.js diagnostics-channel start events can contain function arguments or other data available when execution begins, so review instrumentation hooks as well as what the dashboard displays (Node.js Diagnostics Channel).
- Monitor to alert recipient: Alert messages can be forwarded, stored, or viewed beyond the monitoring console. Prefer a service name, environment, outcome class, and link to an access-controlled internal view over customer details or raw dependency errors.
- Status page to the public: Publish availability state and a useful service-level explanation, not internal exception text, dependency responses, secrets, or customer-specific facts.
Healthchecks.io’s published FAQ says customers should not send personal data about their own customers in API requests and states that the service lacks compliance certifications or attestations (Healthchecks.io FAQ). That is the position stated by that vendor, not evidence about other providers. Review each provider’s current terms, configuration, and actual data flows.
Apply GDPR principles to the actual processing
For processing involving personal data, GDPR Article 5 requires data to be collected for specified purposes, limited to what is necessary, accurate where needed, and retained no longer than necessary. Article 5(1)(c) describes data as “adequate, relevant and limited to what is necessary in relation to the purposes for which they are processed (‘data minimisation’).” The EUR-Lex GDPR text also sets out data protection by design and default in Article 25, processor requirements in Article 28, and security obligations in Article 32.

Whether a particular vendor relationship makes a party a controller or processor, and which obligations apply, depends on the actual processing and roles. An endpoint or vendor checkbox does not establish GDPR compliance. For an EU-facing service, document why each monitoring field is needed, who receives it, its retention period, access controls, and the relevant contractual arrangements. This is engineering guidance, not a legal determination.

Estimate monitoring costs without mixing unlike services
DigitalOcean’s published Uptime price is $1.00 per check per month, billed in hourly increments, and its pricing page lists one free Uptime check per month. DigitalOcean verified these figures on July 13, 2026; check the provider’s current page before budgeting because pricing and allowances can change (DigitalOcean Uptime pricing).
For that product only, a simple full-month baseline is the number of paid checks multiplied by $1.00. For example, three paid checks for a full month would be a $3 baseline before any other monitoring costs. Account for the stated free check and any partial-month active time according to the provider’s hourly billing increments; do not assume that this rate applies to another vendor or to synthetic execution.

Build a monthly inventory before attributing spend:
- Count checks by service and environment, and record how many hours each is active.
- Separate basic endpoint checks from synthetic checkout runs; record frequency, probe locations, and run duration for the latter.
- Include any associated log or metric ingestion, retention, alert delivery, and infrastructure used to run self-hosted monitoring.
- Assign each cost to the service and environment that caused it, then distinguish operational health checks from customer-flow testing.
Google Cloud’s synthetic-monitoring documentation points to separate pricing information, but the evidence here does not establish a comparable all-in monthly total. Self-hosted monitoring also has infrastructure and operating costs; no comparable price was established for it. Use the exact product configuration and current provider pricing when estimating either option.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteKeep monitoring failure out of the checkout path
A telemetry outage should not become a purchase outage. Do not make a real order depend synchronously on publishing its monitoring event. Where appropriate, record telemetry best-effort or asynchronously, and set up an operator alert for loss of the monitoring signal itself. That creates a separate operational failure to detect without making the checkout transaction wait for an observability service. The design recommendation is not a guarantee about any particular monitoring provider.
