Nocturne is based on both Lars Kepler novels The Sandman and Lazarus—not a screen version of just one. Apple’s July announcement names both books; its later trailer notice puts more emphasis on The Sandman. The series brings characters and story elements from the novels into a new American setting, with confirmed changes including Joona Linna becoming Jonah Lynn and Saga Bauer serving as an FBI agent.

What is Nocturne about, and when does it premiere?

Apple TV describes Nocturne as a 10-episode crime thriller. It premieres globally on October 30, 2026, with the first two episodes released together and new episodes arriving on Fridays through December 25, according to Apple’s release announcement. Apple’s series page rates it TV-MA.

The story follows Jonah Lynn, an ex-soldier and homicide detective who leaves Philadelphia for a quieter life in western Pennsylvania. When serial killer Jurek Walter threatens Jonah’s family and the town, the search for Walter’s final missing victim leads Jonah to send Saga Bauer—his surrogate daughter and an FBI agent—into the confrontation.

Liev Schreiber plays Jonah, Zazie Beetz plays Saga, and Stephen Graham plays Jurek Walter. The announced cast also includes Bill Camp, Rory Culkin, Chrissy Metz, Poorna Jagannathan and Gary Carr. John Hlavin is the showrunner and develops the series for television; Rowan Joffé created it for television, and Tim Van Patten directs the first two episodes, Apple TV Press says.

What does each Lars Kepler novel contribute?

The official book descriptions point to two different plot engines: The Sandman centers on a survivor connected to Jurek Walter and an undercover effort to find a missing sister; Lazarus centers on murders tied to Joona Linna’s past. Apple has not published a scene-by-scene account of how the novels map onto the season, so these are useful comparisons of the source stories, not confirmed episode assignments.

Novel What its official synopsis describes Connection to Nocturne
The Sandman A young man, presumed dead after becoming one of Jurek Walter’s victims 13 years earlier, is found alive on a train track. Joona Linna and Saga Bauer go undercover to get information from Jurek that could help locate the man’s missing sister. Penguin Random House identifies the survivor as Mikael Kohler-Frost and says Jurek is held in a maximum-security psychiatric hospital, where Saga must infiltrate to reach him. Its survivor, Jurek and undercover-investigation elements provide the clearest source-story connection to the announced Nocturne premise.
Lazarus A killer targets some of Europe’s most loathed criminals. Two victims have troubling connections to Joona, suggesting that the killings are a message directed at him. Penguin Random House likewise describes murders tied to Joona’s past that lead him to seek Saga’s help against a criminal mastermind. It supplies a second Joona-and-Saga story strand: a murder investigation linked to the detective’s past.

The distinction matters: Apple’s announcement identifies both novels as source material, while the premise and later trailer notice make Jurek Walter and the missing-victim investigation especially prominent. The available official descriptions do not establish exactly which scenes, characters or twists from either book appear in the finished series.

How does the series change the books?

Apple TV’s premise and Albert Bonniers Förlag’s announcement confirm several adaptations rather than a literal transfer of the novels’ lead characters and setting:

  • Joona becomes Jonah: Liev Schreiber’s Jonah Lynn is a homicide detective and former soldier in western Pennsylvania, adapted from the Joona Linna character.
  • Saga’s role is recast: Zazie Beetz’s Saga Bauer is an FBI agent in the series. Bonniers says this version is inspired by the book character.
  • The setting moves to the United States: Instead of following the novels’ Joona-centered story world, the show places its central conflict in a small Pennsylvania town, with Jonah arriving from Philadelphia.
  • Two novels become one season: The announced premise focuses on Jurek, a missing victim and a threat to Jonah’s family and community. The published book descriptions provide different, related investigations; Apple has not confirmed a detailed division of their plots across the 10 episodes.

These are confirmed character and premise changes, not evidence that the adaptation discards either book. Treat more specific claims about which plot points survived as unverified until the series itself or its creators establish them.

Which book should you read before watching?

You do not need to read both novels to understand the announced premise. If you want a source book that most directly matches the show’s stated focus on Jurek Walter and the search for a missing victim, start with The Sandman. Its story brings Joona and Saga undercover to reach Jurek and uncover what happened to the survivor’s sister.

Choose Lazarus first if you are more interested in a revenge-linked murder investigation and the way Joona’s past draws Saga back into the case. These are recommendations based on the official synopses, not claims about the finished series’ scene order or which book contributes more screen time.

For readers looking for the source text, Penguin Random House lists a paperback edition of The Sandman published January 8, 2019. Its description identifies the novel as inspiration for Nocturne.

What is known—and not yet established—about the adaptation?

As of October 2, 2026, Apple and Bonniers have confirmed the dual-book basis, the episode count, principal premise, cast and premiere schedule. They have not published episode titles or a scene-by-scene adaptation breakdown. The finished season will show how closely its individual cases follow either novel; the announcements alone do not settle that question.
