A mobile app prompt is a poor substitute for a mobile website that already works. If a visitor can read, browse, book, or check a menu in the browser, interrupting that task with “OPEN IN APP” or “GET THE APP” asks the visitor to take on extra work before they have a reason to do so.
Why an app prompt can feel like a roadblock
The irritation is not proof that nobody ever wants apps. It comes from a mismatch: the visitor is trying to finish a task, while the business is trying to secure a home-screen icon, repeat visits, or a channel for notifications. Those goals may align, but the prompt itself does not make the case.

If a restaurant menu loads on the mobile site, for example, a demand to install an app before viewing it delays the very thing the visitor came to do. An install can also mean leaving the current page, waiting for a download, opening the app, creating an account, or granting permissions. Each step needs to earn its place.

The title’s sweeping claim is rhetoric, not a measured finding about all users. The underlying article, attributed in search-result text to Simon Sterne of WebdesignerDepot and dated September 27, 2026, argues against prompts that disrupt a usable mobile website. Its apparent host page was not directly accessible, so that publication metadata is not independently confirmed. WebdesignerDepot is the publication identified in the result.

When a native app adds something the website cannot
There are legitimate reasons to build or use a native app. The value depends on the task, not on the fact that the app exists.
- Offline access: Useful when people need content or functionality without a reliable connection.
- Hardware integration: An app may make meaningful use of device capabilities that are awkward or unavailable in a browser.
- Frequent notifications: Alerts can help when a person genuinely wants timely updates and can control whether to receive them.
These are potential advantages, not automatic ones. If the app does not improve the visitor’s current task, asking for an install chiefly serves the business’s preference for a persistent presence.

How to decide whether to install an app
For a user, the practical question is whether the app’s added value exceeds the extra friction. Check the task you came to complete and what the app would change:
- Try the mobile website first. If it lets you complete the task comfortably, there may be no reason to install anything.
- Look for a specific benefit. Offline use, useful device integration, or notifications you actively want are stronger reasons than a generic claim that the app is better.
- Count the extra steps. Consider the download, account setup, permissions, and whether the app makes you repeat work already done in the browser.
- Decline if the benefit is unclear. You can use the website where it meets your needs; an app prompt is not an obligation.
What businesses should offer instead
A business should start with how often customers use the service and whether an app makes that experience more convenient. The case is different for a service people use frequently than for one they visit occasionally. A standalone app also asks customers to adopt one more place to search, sign in, and keep updated.

A 2016 essay in Reforming Retail made this argument in the context of merchants: app decisions should follow customer frequency and convenience rather than competitors’ choices. It contrasted more frequent airline and grocery relationships with fragmented local restaurant patronage, and suggested shared discovery platforms and cloud point-of-sale networks as possible alternatives. Those were the essay’s argument and forecast, not evidence that those alternatives became the prevailing model. Read the 2016 Reforming Retail essay.
The same essay reported a figure of 600,000 U.S. restaurants and attributed it to NPD, but did not state the statistic’s year. It should not be treated as a current restaurant count. The essay’s broader point is more durable: a merchant’s convenience does not necessarily require customers to install that merchant’s own app.

A less frustrating way to promote an app
If an app offers a real advantage, make it an option rather than a toll gate. Keep the mobile website usable, explain the concrete benefit in plain language, and provide a discreet app link. If a visitor declines, let them continue without repeated interruptions. That approach gives people enough information to choose while keeping the immediate task in front of them.
