Polyphony Digital has released a new Gran Turismo 7 opening movie that runs six minutes and 40 seconds. Arriving with the game’s Spec IV update for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, it is less a conventional trailer than a statement of purpose: cars, racing and the history of driving are central content, not decoration around a set of events.
What is the new Gran Turismo 7 opening movie?
The refreshed opening is a cinematic introduction to Gran Turismo 7 made by developer Polyphony Digital. Push Square reports that the film lasts six minutes and 40 seconds and launched alongside the Spec IV update.

Its subject is deliberately broader than a sequence of race starts. The film presents automotive history, iconic machines and the act of driving as experiences worth lingering over. That emphasis explains why the video feels unusually specific: it communicates what Polyphony believes Gran Turismo is, rather than simply advertising the next collection of races.

This is not the studio discovering elaborate openings for the first time. Push Square notes that the original Gran Turismo 7 opening ran for eight minutes. The new cut is shorter, but six minutes and 40 seconds remains exceptional for a game introduction and shows that the series’ cinematic identity is longstanding.

What changed with the Spec IV update?
The movie is part of a much larger update program. Sony’s PlayStation Blog says Spec IV is divided into two releases in 2026: the first arrives in October and the second in December. The program begins celebrations for Gran Turismo’s 30th anniversary in 2027.
Sony’s announcement describes Spec IV as adding new circuits, new cars, more competition and features intended to make the game more welcoming. The opening movie therefore arrives as the visual introduction to a substantial content and accessibility push, not as an isolated video asset.

Why the anniversary matters
Gran Turismo began in 1997 and has evolved alongside PlayStation. Polyphony Digital’s catalog reports 100 million worldwide sell-through units as of June 2025. That global reach gives the studio an unusually large audience for presenting car culture, racing technique and automotive design as subjects in their own right.

Polyphony’s design philosophy treats a vehicle as more than a performance rating. A car has a past, a shape, a sound and a relationship to the road. An extended opening gives the studio room to connect those ideas before the player starts an event.
That approach also distinguishes Gran Turismo from a game introduction built only around competition. The film can establish the emotional context for driving—why a particular machine matters and why the activity itself is compelling—before the game asks players to chase lap times.
The studio’s broader technology project
Polyphony’s work with Gran Turismo Sophy reinforces the same focus on driving quality. The official Sophy project page describes it as a “revolutionary superhuman racing AI agent” that mastered Gran Turismo Sport. Sony AI, Polyphony Digital and Sony Interactive Entertainment created the collaboration to race against and elevate the experience of top Gran Turismo drivers.

Sophy is not part of the opening movie, but it shows how the studio extends its interest in realistic driving beyond presentation. The cinematic celebrates the meaning of cars; the AI project explores how convincingly the game can respond to a driver.
Is Gran Turismo 7 on PS5 and PS4?
Yes. Polyphony Digital’s official catalog lists Gran Turismo 7 for both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, released March 4, 2022. Sony Interactive Entertainment is the publisher, and Polyphony Digital is the developer.

What the new movie says about Gran Turismo 7
The most important change is not a new race rule or a single vehicle reveal. It is the clarity of the message. Spec IV places Gran Turismo 7 inside a 2026 update plan that leads toward the franchise’s 30th anniversary, while the six-minute-40-second opening reminds players why the series has lasted: Polyphony wants the history, design and sensation of driving to be part of the game’s subject.
That is why the film feels like proof of the studio’s priorities. A developer less invested in cars would use an opening to rush toward competition. Polyphony continues to make time for the machines themselves.
