The Nobel Prize in Physics honors major discoveries or inventions in physics; the Nobel Prize in Chemistry honors important chemical discoveries or improvements; and the formally named Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine recognizes major discoveries across a broad biomedical field as well as clinical medicine. Those boundaries guide the awards, but they are not airtight: some work can reasonably be understood through more than one discipline.
The three prizes in one view
Alfred Nobel’s will supplies the starting point for all three categories. In the official wording, one prize is for “the most important discovery or invention within the field of physics,” another for “the most important chemical discovery or improvement,” and another for “the most important discovery within the domain of physiology or medicine.” The wording is broad and does not provide a modern checklist of subjects, techniques or departments.

The most useful distinction is therefore the contribution being honored, not the building, instrument or professional title associated with the researchers. A material can be studied by a chemist and a physicist; a biological discovery can be investigated with chemical methods; and a medical advance can rest on a basic physical insight.
What the Nobel Prize in Physics recognizes
The original mandate
Physics is the category for the most important discovery or invention within physics under Nobel’s will. “Invention” matters as well as “discovery”: the prize can recognize a new physical device or technique when it embodies a major advance in understanding or exploiting a physical principle. The wording does not limit the award to theoretical work, laboratory observations or a particular scale of nature.

What falls within the modern scope
A physics contribution may concern matter, energy, fields, motion, information or the behavior of systems under carefully defined physical laws. The category has covered work that ranges from basic phenomena to instruments that make previously inaccessible measurements possible. A project does not become chemistry merely because it studies atoms or molecules, and it does not become medicine merely because later research uses the result in healthcare. The committee evaluates the central scientific achievement and the way it changed physics.
The 2025 illustration
For the 2025 prize, John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret and John M. Martinis were recognized “for the discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and energy quantisation in an electric circuit.” The citation is a useful reminder that physics can examine quantum behavior in an engineered electrical system. The setting is a circuit, but the recognized contribution is a physical discovery about quantum mechanics, not an award for electronics as a commercial industry.
What the Nobel Prize in Chemistry recognizes
The original mandate
Chemistry is defined in the will as the most important chemical discovery or improvement. That formulation covers both a new understanding of chemical behavior and a practical or methodological advance that changes what chemists can make, measure or control. It is not restricted to substances used in medicine, industrial products or laboratory reagents.

Chemical research often sits between disciplines. Molecular structure can require physical theory; biological systems can be examined through chemical reactions; and a new material can have consequences for medicine or engineering. The chemistry category is appropriate when the decisive contribution is chemical in character, even if the eventual applications are outside a chemistry department. Conversely, the presence of molecules alone does not determine the category.
The 2025 illustration
Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson and Omar M. Yaghi received the 2025 Chemistry Prize “for the development of metal-organic frameworks.” The citation points to a class of designed materials built through chemical principles. It shows how the chemistry prize can recognize the creation and control of a new materials platform rather than a single drug, reaction used in manufacturing or isolated molecule.

What the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine recognizes
Why the formal name matters
The official name is Physiology or Medicine, not simply “Medicine.” “Medicine” is convenient shorthand after the formal name has been established, but the shorter label can imply a narrower scope than the Nobel category actually has. The Nobel historical account explains that “physiology” had a broader meaning in Alfred Nobel’s time and that the will has been interpreted to cover biomedical fields as well as clinical medicine.
A biomedical category, not only a treatment prize
The category can recognize discoveries about how living systems function, how disease develops, how the body responds to injury or infection, and how a clinical intervention becomes possible. It is not necessary for a laureate to have created a prescription drug, performed a procedure or treated patients directly. The official history cites behavioral science, computer-assisted tomography and plant genetics as examples that illustrate the breadth of the category. These examples would not all be described as bedside medicine, yet each can contribute to understanding physiology or improving health.

Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi received the 2025 prize “for their discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance.” The citation concerns a biological mechanism that keeps immune responses from damaging the body. It demonstrates how the category can honor foundational biomedical knowledge whose implications include disease research and treatment, even when the award is for understanding rather than a finished therapy.
Why the categories overlap
It is tempting to use simple rules such as “molecules belong to Chemistry” or “anything involving patients belongs to Medicine.” Nobel history does not support those rules. The same discovery can have legitimate physical, chemical and biomedical significance, while the award must still be made in one category.
The recognized contribution matters more than the application
Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen’s discovery of X-rays is a classic example. X-rays transformed medical diagnosis and also mattered to chemistry, yet the Nobel Prize recognized the discovery in Physics. The award category reflected the nature of the original physical discovery, not the fact that hospitals became one of its most visible users.

Methods can cross disciplinary lines
The historical record also includes molecular-genetics work recognized in Chemistry. A discovery may involve genes, proteins or cells while the decisive advance is a chemical explanation, structure or method. Chemistry’s own history discusses work that could reasonably be viewed as chemistry and physics or as chemistry and medicine. These cases are not exceptions that invalidate the categories; they show that the categories are organizing judgments rather than sealed compartments.
How to explain an overlap accurately
- Identify the specific discovery, invention or improvement named in the citation.
- Describe the scientific question that the work answered or the capability it created.
- Separate the original contribution from later applications in another field.
- State the Nobel category actually used instead of claiming that the work could only belong there.
This approach avoids turning a historical award into a claim that the Nobel committees consider disciplines mutually exclusive.
Who decides which category receives the prize?
Different institutions award the categories
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awards both Physics and Chemistry. The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet awards Physiology or Medicine. Each institution has its own Nobel Committee, which examines nominations and prepares proposals for the awarding body. The committee’s recommendation is not itself the final award: the relevant academy or assembly makes the decision.
Nominations are not a public popularity contest
Nominations are confidential for 50 years under the Nobel Foundation statutes. As a result, there is no official public nominee list for current prize years comparable to an election ballot. Public speculation about possible laureates should not be presented as an official nomination record.
What the process means for category boundaries
The institutions are deciding both whether work is worthy of a Nobel Prize and which category best fits the contribution. A researcher’s job title, department or nationality does not determine the category. Nor does the existence of a commercial product or a medical application automatically move work into Medicine. The scientific significance and the category’s mandate are the relevant questions.

A practical way to classify a discovery
When a new result appears to straddle fields, use this sequence rather than sorting it by keywords.
- Read the award-level claim. Ask what was actually discovered, invented or improved. “A new imaging system” is less informative than the physical principle that makes the system work.
- Find the center of gravity. Is the decisive advance a physical law or phenomenon, a chemical structure or process, or knowledge of physiology, disease and biomedical function?
- Separate tool from result. A microscope, detector, algorithm or synthesis method may be the means. The category usually follows the scientific result the tool enabled.
- Separate origin from use. A physical discovery can become a medical diagnostic; a chemical material can become a therapeutic platform. Later use does not rewrite the original contribution.
- Check the official citation. Nobel citations state the contribution in a compact form. Use that wording when explaining the award, and avoid expanding it into a claim the citation does not make.
- Acknowledge a reasonable alternative reading. If the work has clear significance in another field, say so while naming the category in which it was honored.
This framework is for explanation, not for predicting a committee’s decision. Nobel committees weigh evidence, historical impact and the field’s development in ways that cannot be reduced to a public scoring formula.
What the numbers say—and what they do not
The Nobel Prize overview published by Nobel Prize Outreach in 2026 reports the following cumulative totals for awards from 1901 through 2025:

These figures count awards and laureates; they do not measure a field’s prestige, difficulty, social value or scientific quality. A category can have fewer prizes for historical or institutional reasons without being less important. The totals also should not be read as a comparison of individual researchers, since a single prize may be shared and the rules governing laureate numbers affect the count.

For context, the same overview reports 633 awards to 1,026 people and organisations across the Nobel Prizes and the economics prize through 2025. That combined figure is a count of awards and recipients, not a common scale for ranking disciplines.
How to read the latest examples
The 2025 awards are the latest completed prize year represented in the cited official overview. They span three very different kinds of contribution:

Because prize announcements occur annually, “latest” is date-sensitive. The examples above are accurate for the 2025 prize year; a later official announcement would supersede them as the newest illustrations without changing the underlying category definitions.
Common mistakes when comparing the prizes
Calling the third category only “Medicine”
Use “Physiology or Medicine” on first reference. After that, “Medicine” is acceptable shorthand if the formal name is clear. The longer name signals that the prize includes physiology and broad biomedical research.

The will provides the legal and historical foundation, not a contemporary list of academic departments. Fields have changed since 1901, so the wording must be interpreted in light of modern science and the Nobel institutions’ established practice.
Assuming one discovery can fit only one field
Cross-disciplinary significance is normal. The accurate statement is that a discovery was recognized in a particular category, while noting other fields in which it has importance when that context helps the reader.
Using laureate totals to rank subjects
Counts are descriptive statistics. They are not evidence that one prize is harder to win, more prestigious or more valuable than another.
Confusing nomination rumors with decisions
Current nominations remain confidential for 50 years. A forecast, media list or expert guess is not an official nomination or a category decision.
The bottom line
Physics, Chemistry and Physiology or Medicine share the same Nobel framework but recognize different centers of scientific contribution. Physics focuses on physical discoveries and inventions; Chemistry on chemical discoveries and improvements; and Physiology or Medicine on discoveries in physiology, disease and the wider biomedical field. The boundaries are useful guides rather than rigid walls, so the clearest explanation names the honored contribution, identifies the official category and acknowledges legitimate overlap instead of forcing every result into a single disciplinary box.
