Each prize committee invites qualified people to submit confidential nominations, checks eligibility, evaluates candidates with specialist help, and recommends finalists to the institution that awards that category. That institution makes the final decision. Laureates are contacted privately before the result is announced at category-specific press conferences, and the awards are presented on 10 December.
Who can nominate someone for a Nobel Prize?
Nominations come only from people who are entitled to submit them for a particular prize. The relevant Nobel committee sends invitations during the nomination season. Typical invited nominators include members of academies, university professors, researchers, parliamentarians and previous Nobel laureates. The exact pool can differ by category and by the rules of the institution responsible for that prize.

An invited nominator must submit a written nomination and the supporting material requested by the committee. A name does not enter the formal evaluation simply because a person is famous, has public support or appears in media coverage. Committees first check whether the person who submitted the nomination was qualified to do so and whether the submission arrived within the annual window.

No. Personal applications are excluded by the Nobel Foundation’s statutes. Section 7 states: “A personal application for an award shall not be considered.” A candidate therefore needs a nomination from an eligible, invited nominator. Sending a letter or email directly to a committee as an individual applicant does not create a valid Nobel nomination.

Is there a public nomination form?
There is no open, public contest in which anyone can add a name to a ballot. Nomination invitations are distributed to qualified nominators for the relevant category. The process is designed to gather expert assessments rather than measure popularity or the volume of public endorsements.
When do Nobel nominations open and close?
The annual cycle begins when committees send invitations, normally in September, and continues through the winter deadline. Two dates appear in official descriptions and need to be read precisely:
| Wording | What it refers to |
|---|---|
| 31 January | The operational deadline used in the Nobel Foundation’s 2024 annual review and in current media guidance. |
| 1 February | The cutoff expressed in the Nobel Foundation statutes, which describe submissions during the preceding twelve months up to February 1. |
In practical instructions for a given year, nominators should follow the date and time stated in that year’s invitation or official calendar. The difference is not permission to submit late; it reflects the way the operating calendar and the statutory language are worded.

How does the Nobel Prize selection process work?
The broad sequence is shared across the prizes, although category procedures and committee arrangements are not identical. Committees spend most of the year moving from a large, confidential pool to a recommendation supported by detailed expert analysis.

1. Invitations and written nominations
For each category, the Nobel committee identifies the people and organizations entitled to nominate and sends invitations. Nominators provide the candidate’s name, the work or contribution for which recognition is sought and relevant supporting material. The committee receives submissions by the annual cutoff and keeps the contents confidential.
2. Eligibility checks and compilation
After the deadline, the committee verifies that each nominator was entitled to submit a proposal and records the eligible nominations. This administrative stage prevents an unauthorized application from being treated as an official nomination. The committee then compiles the names for the next phase of review.

3. Narrowing the field
The initial list is reduced in stages over the spring and summer. A committee may return to earlier work, combine assessments and request additional material as it narrows the field. The fact that a candidate was nominated in a particular year is not, by itself, evidence that the candidate became a finalist.
4. Domestic and international expert assessment
Remaining candidates are examined in depth with help from experts in the relevant field, including experts from the country concerned and from abroad. Their reports help the committee assess the significance, originality and documented impact of the work under the standards for that prize. The use of outside expertise is one reason the process takes months rather than being decided immediately after nominations close.
5. Committee report and recommendation
During the year, the Nobel Committee prepares a report and recommendation for the institution that awards the category. The committee’s role is evaluative and advisory at this point: it develops the evidence-based recommendation, but it is not the final legal decision-maker for every prize.

6. Final decision by the awarding institution
The responsible prize-awarding institution considers the committee’s work and chooses the laureate or laureates. The principal institutional responsibilities are:
| Prize category | Institution that makes the award decision |
|---|---|
| Physics | Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences |
| Economic Sciences | Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences |
| Literature | Swedish Academy |
| Peace | Norwegian Nobel Committee |
These institutions operate under the Nobel Foundation’s common framework, but their detailed regulations, committee composition and working practices can vary. It is therefore inaccurate to describe every category as using exactly the same internal procedure.
Who actually chooses the Nobel laureates?
The answer depends on the category, but the distinction between committee and awarding institution is central. Nobel Committees organize the nomination review, commission expert assessments and submit recommendations. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences decides the Physics and Economic Sciences awards; the Swedish Academy decides Literature; and the Norwegian Nobel Committee decides the Peace Prize.
That division also explains why a nomination is not a public vote. Qualified nominators contribute proposals, committees conduct the investigation, and the designated institution takes the final decision under the rules for its prize.
Are Nobel nominations and deliberations confidential?
Yes. Nomination names, committee discussions and evaluation material are not released during the current selection cycle. The Nobel Foundation’s annual-review material has reported a historical confidentiality period of 50 years for nomination and evaluation documents. That rule concerns archival access after the period has elapsed; it does not make current-year nominations public.

Because the process is confidential, no responsible source can confirm a current nominee merely because a person, newspaper or organization claims to have nominated them. Publicly naming a candidate does not verify that a valid nomination was submitted, and it cannot predict the final result.
Why confidentiality matters
- It protects nominators from pressure to support a particular candidate.
- It allows committees and experts to discuss strengths and weaknesses candidly.
- It prevents nomination totals from becoming a popularity contest.
- It avoids treating an early-stage nomination as an endorsement by the final awarding institution.
When are Nobel Prize winners announced?
The selection decisions are made in the autumn. The selected laureates are contacted first, and the public announcement follows at official press conferences in early October. The announcement calendar is category-specific: dates and times can change from one year to the next, so readers should consult the Nobel organization’s official calendar for the relevant year rather than rely on a permanent date.
The private call or message normally reaches the laureate before the press conference. That order is deliberate: the person receiving the award should hear the news from the awarding organization before journalists and the general public do. Contact can be difficult when a laureate is asleep, travelling or unreachable, so the public event may follow after officials have made reasonable efforts to notify the recipient.
What is public at announcement time?
The press conference identifies the laureate or laureates and explains the recognized work in the terms supplied by the awarding institution. The nomination list and the committee’s confidential deliberations remain closed. An announcement therefore reveals the outcome, not the complete history of who proposed whom or how each candidate ranked during the review.

When is the Nobel Prize ceremony?
The awards are presented on 10 December, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death. The Nobel Foundation’s statutes designate that date as the Foundation’s festival day. At the ceremony, laureates receive the prize amount, a diploma and a medal.
The announcement and presentation are separate stages. A laureate may be announced in early October and receive the award in December, leaving several weeks for official events and travel arrangements. The 10 December date is the statutory anchor even though the surrounding Nobel Week program can include additional lectures, meetings and ceremonies.
What happens between nomination and ceremony?
The timeline below shows how the confidential stages connect to the public ones:
| Period | Stage | Visibility |
|---|---|---|
| September to the winter cutoff | Invitations issued and written nominations submitted | Confidential |
| After the cutoff | Eligibility checks and compilation of nominations | Confidential |
| Spring through summer | Field narrowed; domestic and foreign experts assess candidates | Confidential |
| Later in the year | Committee reports and recommendations delivered to the awarding institution | Confidential |
| Autumn | Final decisions made | Confidential until announcement |
| Early October | Laureates notified, then announced at press conferences | Public announcement |
| 10 December | Prize presentation with diploma, medal and prize amount | Public ceremony |
Common misunderstandings about Nobel nominations
“A large number of nominations means someone will win.”
It does not. Nomination counts are not a public scoring system, and current nomination information is confidential. Committees assess the substance of the work and the applicable prize criteria, not a published tally.
“A self-nomination can start the process.”
It cannot. The statutes expressly exclude personal applications. Only nominations from qualified, invited nominators enter the committee’s formal review.
“Every Nobel category follows one identical committee procedure.”
The broad stages are similar, but the institutions set category-specific rules and calendars. Differences can include who is invited to nominate, how committees are organized and when a press conference is scheduled.
“The announcement date is fixed every year.”
The presentation date, 10 December, is fixed by the statutes. Announcement dates and times in early October vary by category and year.
Quick Recap
How to verify a Nobel announcement or nomination claim
- Check whether the claim concerns a public laureate announcement or an alleged confidential nomination. Only the former can normally be independently confirmed.
- Identify the category and the institution responsible for it; the deciding body differs between Physics, Economic Sciences, Literature and Peace.
- Use the official calendar for that prize year to confirm the press-conference date and time.
- Treat claims about current nominee names, nomination totals or committee rankings as unverified unless the Nobel organization has officially released them.
- Remember that a valid nomination is only an entry in the current year’s process, not a forecast of selection.
