Noah’s Ark has not been verified at Durupınar, Mount Ararat, Mount Cudi/Judi or any other proposed location. Durupınar is a striking, boat-shaped geological formation in Türkiye and an active research site, but its outline and reported measurements do not establish that it is a vessel. The biblical reference to the “mountains of Ararat” does not name the modern Mount Ararat summit, while Mount Cudi/Judi belongs to a distinct religious and historical tradition. The key distinction is between a place’s significance or resemblance and evidence that can be independently examined.
Has Noah’s Ark been found?
No reviewed source establishes the Ark’s identity or exact resting place. The Durupınar formation is receiving new investigation, but the project’s reported observations are not proof of an archaeological identification. Other locations are associated with textual, religious or historical traditions, not a verified discovery.

That answer does not settle questions of faith or determine what the biblical account means. It addresses a narrower question: whether available geological or archaeological evidence demonstrates that a particular site contains the Ark described in the tradition. On the evidence described here, the answer is no.

It helps to keep four things separate: a textual or religious tradition; a location’s geography; observations made at a site; and an interpretation of those observations. A boat-like outline, local tradition, survey anomaly or research permit may make a site worth investigating. None alone identifies an ancient vessel.

How the proposed locations compare
The candidates are not interchangeable. Some are specific landforms, others are geographic regions or peaks, and Mount Cudi/Judi is prominent as a separate tradition. The table distinguishes why each is discussed from what the evidence establishes.
| Proposed location | Why it is proposed | What the evidence establishes—and does not |
|---|---|---|
| Durupınar formation, near Doğubayazıt in Ağrı Province, Türkiye | A boat-shaped outline, a length reported by the current project as 157 meters (515 feet), and active surveys and drilling. | The project reports survey interpretations and preliminary drilling observations. A peer-reviewed paper’s abstract, indexed by EBSCO, describes natural geological explanations for features previously presented as wood, metal fittings and anchors. The project’s September 2026 release says laboratory analyses were still forthcoming; the Ark identification has not been established. |
| Modern Mount Ararat | A popular search focus associated with the name Ararat. | The biblical phrase is “mountains of Ararat,” and the ancient regional term Ararat/Urartu is broader than the modern summit. National Geographic reports that scholars cannot determine an exact site from the text. |
| Mount Cudi/Judi | A distinct Islamic and historical tradition associates the Ark’s resting place with Judi. | Academic and overview sources discuss it as a separate candidate. That tradition is evidence of a religious and historical association, not archaeological proof of the Ark. |
| Other proposals, including mountains in northern Iran | They appear among locations discussed in overviews of Ark proposals. | The overview material does not provide evidence that would support treating these places as confirmed or as equally evidenced candidates. |
This comparison is not a ranking of the likelihood of each tradition. The available material gives no defensible probability, count of searches, or common measure of evidentiary strength across all proposed places.
What makes Durupınar a compelling proposal—and what it does not prove
The formation is a landform near Doğubayazıt in eastern Türkiye. Noah’s Ark Scans describes it as approximately 157 meters (515 feet) long and says it was first identified in aerial photographs in 1959. That measurement is the project’s reported measurement of the formation, not an independent match between the landform and a proposed vessel.

The Geoscience Research Institute’s historical review records how early proponents framed the Durupınar case: they pointed to its location, shape, approximate length, stones and carbon content. Those points help explain the proposal’s history. The review does not amount to current scientific consensus or independent confirmation that the formation is an Ark.
There is also published counter-evidence to some specific claims made about the site. EBSCO’s record for a peer-reviewed 1996 paper by Lorence G. Collins in the Journal of Geoscience Education summarizes natural explanations for several features: supposed petrified wood is described as basalt, alleged metal fittings as mineral grains, and stones identified as anchors as occurring naturally in the area. This is the indexed abstract, not the full paper, so the claims should be described at that level rather than expanded beyond the record.
What the 2026 Durupınar project has reported
Noah’s Ark Scans says a full geological research project began in 2026, is directed by Prof. Dr. Cenker Atila of Sivas Cumhuriyet University’s Department of Archaeology, and has authorization from a Turkish government regional directorate. The project lists continued ground-penetrating radar (GPR), electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), LiDAR, geological investigation and core drilling.

The project page reports earlier survey interpretations that include linear patterns and room-like shapes, as well as differences in organic material between samples. These should be attributed to the project and treated as reported interpretations. They do not, by themselves, show that a ship or chambers have been found.
What the drilling announcement says
In a September 23, 2026, release, Noah’s Ark Scans said core drilling had begun. The release describes recovered cores as including soil, sediment, organic-rich intervals and cavities. It also says laboratory work was still forthcoming. These are preliminary observations reported by the organization promoting the investigation; the release’s strongly affirmative interpretation of the site is not independent verification.
The distinction matters because a core sample can yield material for analysis without establishing what that material means in context. Until methods, samples, analyses and conclusions are available for scrutiny, the announcement should be read as a report of ongoing work—not as a confirmed discovery.

No. The phrase in Genesis refers to the “mountains of Ararat”; it does not, by itself, specify the summit of the modern Mount Ararat. The ancient name Ararat, also associated with Urartu, referred to a broader region than that particular peak. A reader who treats the biblical wording as a precise coordinate for the modern summit is making a geographical inference that the wording alone does not establish.

National Geographic reports that scholars cannot determine the exact location from the biblical account. The Geoscience Research Institute’s historical review likewise discusses the broader Ararat/Urartu context. A Bible atlas or map of ancient Urartu may help distinguish the regional name from the modern mountain, but a map cannot identify the Ark’s resting place.
Mount Ararat remains a familiar focus for searches because of the name association. Familiarity is not the same thing as a textual pinpoint, and neither a regional reference nor a mountain’s prominence supplies archaeological evidence of a vessel.
What is Mount Cudi/Judi, and why is it linked to Noah’s Ark?
Mount Cudi, also written Judi, is a separate proposed location associated with an Islamic and historical tradition about where the Ark came to rest. It should not be conflated with the Durupınar formation or with modern Mount Ararat: these are distinct places, supported by different kinds of claims.
The existence of a tradition matters when explaining why a place is proposed and how communities have remembered the story. It does not independently establish that an archaeological object is present. Academic and overview treatments identify Cudi/Judi as a candidate, but the sources described here do not establish it as the Ark’s verified location.

Why a research project is not the same as a discovery
Archaeology is not simply a search for a preselected object. National Geographic quotes Jodi Magness, an archaeologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill: “Archaeology is not treasure hunting,” she says. “It’s not about finding a specific object. It’s a science where we come up with research questions that we hope to answer by excavation.”
That distinction is useful at Durupınar and at any proposed location. A rigorous investigation needs to let observations test an interpretation, including the possibility that the interpretation is wrong. If a project begins with a desired identification, its conclusion still has to be demonstrated through transparent methods and evidence that others can assess.
- Tradition or text: explains why a location is meaningful or proposed; it is not a material identification.
- Resemblance: can motivate investigation, but shape alone cannot distinguish a vessel from a natural landform.
- Survey interpretation: can identify patterns or anomalies for follow-up; an interpreted feature is not yet proof of a constructed structure.
- Published, examinable evidence: methods, samples, analyses and reasoning must be available for independent scrutiny before a strong identification can be assessed.
Noah’s Ark Scans describes its data as “suggestive, not conclusive.” That is the project’s own characterization, not an independent assessment. It is nevertheless consistent with treating its reported findings as preliminary rather than as a verified identification.
What would strengthen or weaken the Durupınar claim?
The central issue is not whether the site is interesting or whether investigators have permission to study it. It is whether evidence distinguishes the Ark hypothesis from natural geological explanations and can withstand independent examination. For the 2026 work, the most useful next information would be the results and supporting detail that the drilling announcement says were still pending.
- Clear methods: what was surveyed or sampled, how it was done, and how investigators moved from raw observations to interpretations.
- Context for samples: where each sample came from and how it relates to the surrounding geology, rather than relying on a material description alone.
- Analyses and limits: laboratory results, what they can establish, and what they cannot establish about age, origin or human construction.
- Independent scrutiny: access to methods and results sufficient for specialists outside the project to evaluate the claims.
- Serious consideration of alternatives: whether natural explanations account for the observed features as well as or better than the Ark interpretation.
These are standards for evaluating a claim, not a prediction about what the pending analyses will show. The September release does not provide completed laboratory results, so it cannot answer those questions yet.
How to read new claims about Ark locations
When a new headline says a site “matches” the Ark, identify exactly what has been observed and who is interpreting it. A reported measurement may describe a landform’s length; a survey may show an anomaly; a tradition may name a mountain. Each is a different kind of information, and none should silently be converted into proof of a vessel.
- Check the claim’s source. Is it a project announcement, a historical account, an indexed abstract, or a peer-reviewed study? These sources do not carry the same evidentiary weight.
- Separate observation from interpretation. “Organic-rich interval” or “linear pattern” reports an observation or interpretation; “part of Noah’s Ark” is a further conclusion requiring evidence.
- Look for completed results. If laboratory work is described as forthcoming, the release is preliminary, regardless of how confident its promotional language sounds.
- Ask whether the account allows independent review. A compelling photograph or a project’s own summary is not a substitute for examinable methods, samples and reasoning.
- Keep the geography straight. Ararat/Urartu, the modern Mount Ararat summit, Mount Cudi/Judi and Durupınar are not alternate names for one place.
Applied to the available accounts, this approach yields a measured conclusion: Durupınar is an active research site and a disputed proposal; Ararat/Urartu and Cudi/Judi represent distinct geographical and traditional contexts; none is established as the verified resting place of the Ark.
