If your laptop has no sound, first check where audio is being sent: it may be routed to a monitor, headphones, or a Bluetooth device instead of the built-in speakers. Then check system and app volume. If the intended output is missing from settings, investigate device detection and drivers; if it is visible but silent, focus on routing, mute, connections, and software settings before suspecting hardware.
Start by identifying what is silent
Notice whether the problem affects the built-in speakers, wired headphones, Bluetooth audio, one app, or every sound. Also note whether it began after an update or driver change. These clues help distinguish an output-routing or volume issue from an unavailable device.

- Only one app is silent: check that app’s volume and the operating system’s per-app mixer.
- Speakers are silent but headphones work, or vice versa: check which output is selected and whether the connection is recognized.
- The output device is absent from settings: investigate detection and drivers rather than only raising the volume.
- Bluetooth says connected but no audio plays: confirm it is selected as the output; connection status alone does not mean sound is routed to it.
Fix common sound problems in Windows
Microsoft Support recommends working through its checks in order: “The tips are listed in order, so start with the first one, see if that helps, and then continue to the next one if it doesn’t.” The general audio guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11; the automated Get Help troubleshooter steps are for Windows 11. Menu names can vary by version.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Select the intended output. Open the taskbar sound controls and choose the laptop speakers, headphones, or other device you want to hear. Check that audio has not been sent to a monitor or another connected device. See Microsoft’s Windows audio troubleshooting steps.
- Check system and app volume. Raise the main volume and open Volume Mixer to check the app producing sound. Make sure neither the system nor the app is muted.
- Check the connection and whether the device is enabled. Reseat a wired plug. In Sound settings and the playback device’s properties, verify the intended output is enabled.
- Run the troubleshooter. On Windows 11, use the automated audio troubleshooter in Get Help, then continue with the general checks if it does not resolve the issue.
- If the output device is missing, check detection and drivers. A missing, outdated, disabled, or incorrectly loading driver can prevent Windows from detecting an output, sometimes after an update or driver change. Check Device Manager and consult the laptop or audio-device manufacturer for the correct driver; do not guess at a model-specific download. Follow Microsoft’s guidance for a missing or undetected audio output device.
- If Bluetooth is connected but silent, check routing first. Select the Bluetooth device as the output. If that does not help, Microsoft’s next steps include Bluetooth troubleshooting, re-pairing, toggling Bluetooth, restarting, and checking driver compatibility. See Microsoft’s Bluetooth audio troubleshooting guidance.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s audio troubleshooting page. The applicable steps and support options depend on which Windows version your laptop runs.

Check the built-in speakers on a Mac
- Open Sound settings and select the built-in Mac speakers as the output.
- Raise Output volume and make sure Mute is off.
- Disconnect external audio devices that may be receiving sound, then test again.
- If the internal speakers remain unavailable, follow Apple’s support or service guidance for your specific Mac.
Apple’s Mac speaker troubleshooting page and Mac user guide to sound output settings describe these checks. Setting names may differ by macOS version.

If the output device is present, check routing, mute, volume, app controls, and connections. If it is absent, focus on detection and the appropriate manufacturer-provided driver. When the built-in speakers still do not work after the applicable software and settings checks, contact the laptop manufacturer or an appropriate repair service. Without a specific laptop model and diagnosis, there is no basis to recommend a particular replacement part.
