No Rest for the Wicked class system explained: how to choose a class and build (2026 preview)

No Rest for the Wicked is replacing its old Attributes screen with a class-and-trait system that is still in development. Moon Studios has announced 24 classes, more than 280 class traits, six equipable trait slots, and six factions. Classes are intended to give you a clear combat direction—such as the stealth-oriented Assassin or weapon-focused Knight—while allowing you to unlock and combine traits from different classes instead of permanently locking a character into one choice.

The practical advice is straightforward: start from the weapon range and combat loop you enjoy, follow the associated class recommendations while learning, then add cross-class traits only when they support that same purpose. A definitive “best class” ranking is not possible yet because the complete roster, trait descriptions, costs, and balance values have not been published.

How do classes work in No Rest for the Wicked?

The announced system is a replacement for the separate Attributes screen. Rather than distributing a few points among individual attributes, you will browse named classes, earn Class Points, learn Character Traits, and equip those traits to shape your character.

Thomas Mahler described the intended flow in an official forum preview: “Here’s an early mockup for the classes screen that’ll replace the Attributes Screen. So instead of just putting a few points into this or that attribute, you’ll instead look into the various classes and gain Class Points to learn various Character Traits and those you can then equip on your character in order to build whatever class you want.”

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That wording matters. A class is presented as a readable build framework, not necessarily as a permanent character identity. The class screen is meant to show the weapons and traits that fit a fantasy, so a new player can understand what to pursue without first learning a hidden web of attribute interactions. An experienced player can use the same information as a starting point, then assemble a more unusual combination.

The announced scale

System element Announced amount What it indicates
Classes 24 A broad set of named build directions rather than a short list of fixed roles.
Class traits 280+ Many individual effects will be available for character customization.
Trait slots 6 You equip a limited active selection even though the overall trait pool is much larger.
Factions 6 Factions are part of the announced structure, but their mechanical relationship to classes has not been fully explained.

These are headline figures from Moon Studios’ September 18, 2026 class announcement. They describe the planned system, not a final balance sheet. The announcement does not provide the complete class roster, weapon assignments, trait text, progression costs, or numerical tuning.

Do you choose a class at the start?

Current official material does not show a final character-creation screen or confirm that you must select one class before beginning the game. The preview instead describes a progression in which you gain Class Points and learn traits. That makes the system look more like an evolving build direction than a one-time starting decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Until Moon Studios publishes the finished flow, treat “starting class” as a starting plan rather than an irreversible selection. You may begin with the weapon style you want to practice, identify the class that supports it, and spend early Class Points on that class’s recommended traits. Nothing in the preview establishes a permanent lock, a fixed starting package, or a penalty for experimenting.

What a newcomer should decide first

  • Choose the range and rhythm you want to repeat in ordinary fights: close-range pressure, stealth, ranged attacks, or spell-focused play.
  • Find the class direction whose displayed weapons and traits support that loop.
  • Use the recommended traits while you learn the game’s combat timing and resource demands.
  • Delay unusual hybrid experiments until you know which part of the build is doing the work you value.

This approach avoids treating the first class label as a permanent identity. It is a way to make your first investments understandable while the system remains flexible.

Can you switch classes?

Mahler has said that players should be able to unlock and try everything, although mastering every class will take a long time. That statement supports broad experimentation: you are not expected to create a separate character for every class just to see how its traits work.

The preview does not settle how switching will appear in the interface. It does not publish respec fees, waiting periods, trait prerequisites, Class Point refunds, or limits on changing equipped traits. Do not plan around a specific respec button or assume that switching is free until the final menus and rules are released.

A safe switching routine

  1. Keep your main combat purpose visible. Write down the weapon or spell loop you are currently building around before changing anything.
  2. Inspect the target class. Compare its recommended weapons and traits with your current loop instead of changing because the class name sounds powerful.
  3. Change a small number of traits first. With six slots announced, replace only the slots that directly affect the experiment so you can tell what changed.
  4. Test the new setup in ordinary encounters. Check survivability, mobility, resource use, and ease of execution, not just burst damage.
  5. Keep the previous direction in mind. If the game later imposes a cost for respecializing, a clear record of your old setup will make returning easier.

The last two steps are practical habits, not confirmed game rules. They are useful precisely because final switching costs and interface details are still unknown.

Can you combine traits from different classes?

Yes, that is a central purpose of the announced design. Classes provide organized recommendations, while Character Traits are the pieces you equip to create your actual build. Mahler’s example contrasts a conventional “Strength + Faith” character with a “Knight” whose associated weapons and traits are visible. The system is intended to make that direction easier to read without preventing combinations outside the class’s original path.

The six-slot limit gives experimentation a practical boundary. You can learn from a large pool of more than 280 traits, but only a small selection is active at once. A strong hybrid therefore needs a clear job for each equipped trait rather than six unrelated effects that look impressive in isolation.

How to make a hybrid coherent

  • Choose one primary loop. Decide whether the build wins by staying in melee, remaining unseen, attacking from distance, or sustaining spell use.
  • Use the home class for the core. Start with the traits and weapons the class explicitly presents as its identity.
  • Borrow one supporting idea at a time. A trait from another class should solve a recognizable problem in the primary loop, such as improving its safety, mobility, or resource handling.
  • Remove effects that do not trigger often. A theoretically strong trait is poor value if your chosen weapon or range rarely activates it.
  • Recheck the complete six-slot package. The question is whether the traits work together during a normal encounter, not whether each one is strong on its own.

The official preview does not list trait effects, so no specific cross-class combination can be verified yet. Any detailed build guide claiming an optimal six-trait setup before the roster is published is necessarily provisional.

What is the best class for a beginner?

There is no evidence-based universal winner yet. Moon Studios has not released the complete 24-class roster, the final weapon mapping, or the numbers needed to compare damage, durability, mobility, and resource costs. The sensible beginner choice is the class direction that matches the way you naturally want to fight.

If you prefer… Start by examining… Why this is a reasonable first direction
Close-range pressure A class whose previewed weapons stay in melee range It keeps your early trait choices focused on the spacing and timing you will practice most.
Stealth and opportunistic attacks The Assassin direction shown in the preview Its example includes a stealth-related trait, making the intended fantasy easy to understand.
Ranged attacks A class displaying ranged weapons and supporting traits You can align your equipment and trait choices around maintaining distance.
Spell-focused play A class whose recommended traits support repeated spell use It gives you a visible framework for the resource and positioning demands of casting.

The table identifies directions, not confirmed performance rankings. A class that feels easiest for one player may feel awkward for another because execution, preferred range, and tolerance for resource management differ.

What makes a beginner-friendly direction

  • The recommended weapons are easy for you to control.
  • The class fantasy tells you what to do in a fight without requiring a complicated rotation.
  • Its traits reinforce one primary behavior instead of asking you to alternate between unrelated conditions.
  • You can recognize when the build is working by observing your positioning, attack pattern, and resource use.

When Moon Studios publishes full trait descriptions, learning curve and flexibility should be part of the comparison—not damage alone.

How do I build around a weapon?

Build around the weapon you will actually use repeatedly, then use the class system to support that decision. The preview specifically presents classes as a way to show which weapons and traits belong together, so weapon choice is a more reliable starting point than chasing a class label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Pick the weapon pattern. Decide whether you want sustained close-range attacks, stealth engagements, ranged pressure, or a spell-centered loop.
  2. Open the matching class direction. Look for the class that displays that weapon style among its recommendations.
  3. Learn the core traits first. Spend early Class Points on traits that directly improve the weapon’s intended behavior rather than collecting unrelated bonuses.
  4. Reserve a slot for a problem you actually encounter. Once the core works, use one of the six equipable slots for a supporting effect that addresses survivability, mobility, or resource strain.
  5. Add a cross-class trait only with a specific reason. If it does not improve the chosen weapon loop, it is probably diluting the build.
  6. Reevaluate after meaningful play. Change traits when your combat habits or preferred weapon changes, not merely because another class has a more attractive name.

Weapon identity is more useful than a tier label

A future class guide should describe each class by weapon identity, preferred range, resource demands, survivability, mobility, trait flexibility, learning curve, and compatibility with other classes. Those categories explain how a build behaves. A damage-only ranking would ignore whether a player can reliably reach the target, maintain the required resource, or survive mistakes.

How should you spend Class Points?

Class Points are the announced progression currency for learning Character Traits. The preview does not state how many points you earn, whether every class has the same costs, or whether points can be refunded. For that reason, the safest early policy is to spend points on traits that clarify and reinforce one combat purpose.

A practical priority order

  1. Core behavior: traits that directly support the weapon or range you selected.
  2. Reliability: effects that help you perform that behavior consistently, such as improving your ability to stay in the right position or sustain the loop.
  3. Survivability: a defensive or escape-oriented option if ordinary encounters punish mistakes.
  4. Experimentation: a cross-class trait after the first three needs are covered.

This is a decision framework, not a claim about hidden trait values. Until costs and prerequisites are public, avoid assuming that an expensive-looking path is stronger or that every class has an identical progression curve.

What are the six factions for?

Six factions are part of the announced class-system scale, but Moon Studios has not yet explained their exact mechanical role. The available material does not establish whether factions provide traits, determine class access, affect story relationships, or function as a separate layer of progression.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat faction names as a substitute for class information. A faction count alone cannot tell you which weapons a class uses, how its traits interact, or whether faction choice changes respec options. Wait for the full explanation before making a build decision around faction affiliation.

What is confirmed, and what is still provisional?

Confirmed in the announced material Still awaiting final details
The old Attributes screen is being replaced by a class-and-trait approach. The complete class roster and each class’s final name.
Players will gain Class Points to learn Character Traits. Every trait’s description, value, prerequisite, and cost.
Traits can be equipped to shape a build. The final respec process, refund rules, and any switching cost.
The announced scale is 24 classes, 280+ traits, six slots, and six factions. Final balance, progression limits, and weapon-to-class mapping.
Players are intended to unlock and try everything over time. How long mastery takes and what “mastery” means mechanically.

This distinction is important for anyone planning a long-term character. The broad design direction is clear; the details needed for a definitive tier list are not.

When will the class system be playable?

Moon Studios’ official homepage currently lists a December open beta for the class system and a March 2027 1.0 launch for No Rest for the Wicked. The September 18, 2026 announcement says all 24 classes will be available in that open beta.

Those are future milestones as of October 16, 2026 and may change. The open beta should be treated as an opportunity to learn the system and provide feedback, not as proof that every value or menu is final. The 1.0 release is the point at which the finished launch implementation is expected, but balance and presentation can still be adjusted before then.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to prepare for the open beta

  • Choose a first combat question. For example: do you enjoy staying close, attacking unseen, maintaining distance, or casting?
  • Pick one class direction to learn deeply. Avoid trying to compare all 24 immediately; first understand how a coherent set of traits changes your play.
  • Record the traits you equip. Because the final interface and respec rules are not known, a simple note helps you reproduce a setup.
  • Test one variable at a time. Change a weapon or trait, then observe whether the combat loop improves.
  • Compare by more than damage. Note survivability, mobility, resource pressure, execution difficulty, and how often traits trigger.
  • Expect iteration. An open beta can change values and menus before 1.0, so avoid presenting a beta setup as a permanent best build.

How future class guides should compare builds

Once Moon Studios publishes the complete roster, a useful comparison should answer the following questions for every class:

  • Resource demands: Does the loop require careful management of a limited resource?
  • Survivability: How forgiving is the class when positioning or timing goes wrong?
  • Mobility: Can it engage, disengage, or reposition reliably?
  • Trait flexibility: Does it work only with its own traits, or does it combine naturally with others?
  • Learning curve: Can a newcomer understand the basic loop quickly?
  • Cross-class compatibility: Which supporting traits reinforce the class without changing its identity?

Damage can be one measurement, but it should be tied to a specific version and patch context. Without that qualification, a numerical ranking would quickly become misleading.

Common mistakes to avoid

Picking a class because its name sounds strongest

Names communicate fantasy, not confirmed power. Use the displayed weapons and traits to determine whether the direction matches your preferred combat loop.

Filling all six slots with unrelated effects

The slot limit rewards a coherent package. A collection of individually attractive traits can perform poorly if they require incompatible ranges, timings, or resources.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming the preview is the final menu

Moon Studios describes the shown interface as an early mockup. Exact labels, costs, prerequisites, and progression limits can change before the open beta or 1.0.

Building a tier list before the roster is published

Without the full class and trait data, claims about the best class are speculation. Conditional recommendations by playstyle are the honest choice for now.

Ignoring the cost of mastery

Mahler says players should be able to unlock and try everything, but mastering every class will take a long time. Experiment broadly if you want; do not expect to master all 24 directions at once.

Bottom line for choosing your first direction

Start with the weapon and combat loop you want to repeat, select the class that makes that direction legible, and follow its recommended traits while learning. Once the core works, use the six available slots to add carefully chosen support from other classes. The system is designed for guided flexibility, not permanent class imprisonment, but the final roster, costs, trait effects, and balance are still pending the December open beta and March 2027 1.0 release.
