Short answer: No Man’s Sky is the better-documented choice for repeated discovery of procedurally generated planets, lifeforms, and changing environmental types. Starfield’s current documented strength is a newer cruise-mode layer for travelling through open space between planets and to points of interest inside a star system. The games therefore emphasize different meanings of exploration, and the available official information does not establish an objective winner for planetary quality, exploration depth, or overall gameplay.

The comparison below separates what each game officially provides from conclusions that would require hands-on testing. It also includes the major 2026 updates that change how the two games should be assessed.

At a glance: two different exploration structures

No Man’s Sky builds its identity around moving through a procedurally generated universe, landing on worlds, cataloguing life, and finding environmental variations. Its recent updates extend that loop with new planet classes, deeper oceans, orbital construction, salvage, station management, and creature training.

Starfield’s cited April 2026 Free Lanes update approaches exploration from the space-travel side. It adds a cruise mode for open-space travel between planets and for reaching points of interest within a system. The same update also lists changes to ships, outposts, gear customization, and locations, but the official material reviewed here does not provide a complete description of Starfield’s planetary-generation system.

That table is a feature map, not a scoring chart. It shows where the official descriptions are detailed and where they are not.

How planetary exploration differs

No Man’s Sky: discovery is the organizing principle

No Man’s Sky’s official overview describes a procedurally generated universe containing planets and lifeforms, with travel that moves from deep space to planetary surfaces. In practical terms, the game’s documented premise is not a small set of hand-authored destinations but a universe designed for ongoing discovery across many worlds.

Worlds Part II, identified as Update 5.5, expands the range of environments rather than merely adding another destination label. Hello Games documents purple-class star systems, more varied terrain, gas giants, water worlds, deeper oceans, water-bearing moons, and additional environmental features. These additions matter because they change what a planet can be like: a visit may involve surface geology, extensive water, an ocean depth, a moon with water, or a gas-giant setting instead of a familiar terrestrial landscape.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The update notes also say that existing systems were not regenerated by the new purple-system terrain settings. That qualification is important. New terrain-generation settings do not mean every previously visited world was rewritten, so returning players should distinguish newly generated environments from changes to old locations.

Starfield: the current documented change is movement through a system

Starfield’s April 7, 2026 Free Lanes update, version 1.16.236, adds cruise-mode travel in open space between planets and to points of interest within a star system. Bethesda describes the update as available on all platforms and calls it the game’s biggest update to that point.

This establishes a new way to move through the space between destinations. It does not, by itself, establish how Starfield generates planets, how many planetary environments exist, or whether its worlds offer more or less variety than No Man’s Sky. The official update description cited for this comparison does not enumerate those planetary-generation details, so claims that one game objectively has better or more numerous planets would go beyond the documented evidence.

What the evidence allows you to conclude

If your definition of exploration is discovering many procedurally generated worlds and recording their life and environments, No Man’s Sky has the clearer official case. If your priority is actively cruising through the open space of a star system before reaching a planet or point of interest, Starfield now has a specifically documented feature aimed at that activity.

Those are different advantages. A procedural universe says more about the source and variety of destinations; cruise mode says more about the route between destinations. Neither description proves which game will feel more rewarding to every player.

Space travel and what happens between planets

No Man’s Sky: a navigable system rather than a simple destination menu

The official Cosmos Update 7.0 feature page describes an interactive star-system map with navigational assistance. It also identifies fixed, revisitable space points of interest, deep-space outposts, salvage, and orbital construction. In addition, the page describes becoming a space-station director and forming or joining alliances.

Fixed points of interest change the meaning of revisiting a system. A location that can spawn at a fixed position is something you can return to, route toward, and incorporate into an ongoing plan rather than a one-time marker that disappears after discovery. The same feature page connects space travel with construction and salvage, so movement can lead into resource recovery, derelict-hulk exploration, or building work in orbit.

The page also describes long-haul flight to the system’s star. That is a distinct form of travel from selecting a planet on a map: the star itself becomes a navigable destination within the system’s travel model.

Starfield: cruise mode makes open space an explicit travel segment

Free Lanes adds cruise mode for open-space travel between planets and to points of interest. The documented scope is within a star system, so this should not be read as a claim about unrestricted travel across every system or about planetary surfaces. It is a system-level travel feature that gives the space between destinations a defined role.

The update also lists changes involving ships, outposts, weapons, armor, customization, and locations. Those notes indicate that Free Lanes is broader than a single flight mechanic, but the cited material does not provide enough detail to quantify the changes or describe every interaction.

Which travel model fits which player?

  • Choose the No Man’s Sky model if you want a system map tied to revisitable locations, salvage, orbital building, and a larger discovery loop that starts in deep space and continues on planetary surfaces.
  • Choose the Starfield model if the specific appeal is cruising through open space between planets and reaching system points of interest through a newly documented travel mode.
  • Do not infer a winner from travel alone. The two descriptions concern different layers of play, and neither supplies a complete measurement of immersion, travel time, or activity density.

Planet variety, oceans, and environmental change

What No Man’s Sky’s Worlds Part II adds

Worlds Part II documents several environmental categories that make planetary visits materially different from one another:

  • Purple-class star systems: a new system classification associated with new terrain-generation settings.
  • More varied terrain: broader surface differences rather than a single repeated landscape profile.
  • Gas giants: a world type that expands the setting beyond solid surfaces.
  • Water worlds: planets where water is the dominant environmental feature.
  • Deeper oceans: underwater exploration with greater vertical depth than before.
  • Water-bearing moons: moons that can support water environments.
  • Additional environmental features: further variation beyond the named planet and moon categories.

The practical consequence is a wider menu of reasons to land, dive, scan, and revisit. A gas giant, a deep ocean, and a water-bearing moon imply different movement and observation problems even before considering lifeforms or hazards.

Because the patch notes say existing systems were not regenerated by the new purple-system terrain settings, the update should be understood as an expansion of available environments, not a universal rewrite of every previously discovered system.

What cannot be claimed for Starfield from the cited material

The Free Lanes announcement establishes cruise travel and several broader system changes, but it does not enumerate Starfield’s planetary-generation rules, planet count, biome count, terrain algorithms, ocean depth, or environmental variety. Those details may exist elsewhere, but they are not established by the official material used for this comparison.

Accordingly, a statement such as Starfield has more realistic planets, fewer planets, or better procedural generation would require additional, attributable evidence. The defensible comparison is narrower: No Man’s Sky has an official update documenting specific new planetary and environmental categories, while the cited Starfield update documents a new way to travel through star systems.

Lifeforms, creatures, and discovery as gameplay

No Man’s Sky: cataloguing can lead to creature-focused activities

No Man’s Sky’s official overview places lifeform discovery alongside planetary travel. The Xeno Arena update, dated April 8, 2026, extends that idea into direct gameplay by allowing players to raise, train, and battle alien creatures.

The update associates creature abilities and elemental affinities with species and homeworlds. That connection gives discovery a mechanical consequence: identifying a creature is not only a catalogue entry if its species and origin affect how it can be trained or used in battle.

This is a documented bridge between exploration and progression. You can approach a world for its environment, notice its lifeforms, and then decide whether a particular creature is worth raising or training. The available description does not provide a complete list of abilities, battle rules, or balance values, so those specifics should not be inferred.

Starfield: the cited evidence points to broader equipment and location systems

Free Lanes lists changes to ships, outposts, weapons, armor, customization, and locations. These categories suggest that Starfield’s update emphasis extends beyond travel, but the announcement summary does not give enough detail to describe a creature-discovery loop comparable to Xeno Arena or to rank the two games’ fauna systems.

If creature collection and training are central to your decision, No Man’s Sky has the more explicit, currently documented feature set. If your interest is customizing a ship, outpost, weapon, or armor setup while travelling through a system, Starfield’s update categories are more directly relevant, although the cited information does not specify the extent of each change.

Gameplay beyond finding planets

No Man’s Sky’s documented activity stack

The Cosmos Update 7.0 feature page describes several systems that sit around exploration:

  • Station direction: becoming a space-station director turns a station into an organizational and management space.
  • Alliances: players can form or join alliances, adding a social or cooperative structure to the wider universe.
  • Orbital bases: construction can happen in orbit rather than only on a planetary surface.
  • Derelict hulks and salvage: derelict structures provide exploration and recovery activities in deep space.
  • System navigation: the interactive map and navigational assistance help locate bodies and points of interest.
  • Revisitable points of interest: fixed locations can support repeat visits and longer-term routes.

When combined with Worlds Part II and Xeno Arena, these features create a loop that can move from system mapping to landing, scanning, underwater or surface exploration, salvage, construction, creature training, and return travel.

Starfield’s documented Free Lanes scope

Starfield’s update combines cruise travel with changes to ships, outposts, weapons, armor, customization, and locations. The supported conclusion is that exploration is being connected to vehicle travel and to several equipment and world-building systems.

The available announcement does not specify whether each listed category adds a new subsystem, expands an existing one, or adjusts content already in the game. It also does not provide comparative measures such as the number of locations, the frequency of encounters, or the length of a typical activity chain. Treat those omissions as limits on what can be responsibly compared, not as evidence that the systems are absent.

How to choose without relying on a universal winner

Pick No Man’s Sky for discovery-first play

No Man’s Sky is the more defensible choice when your main question is, What kind of world will I find next? Its documented foundation is procedural generation, and its recent updates add named environmental categories rather than narrowing the game to one type of planet. The game also gives discoveries follow-on uses through creature training, salvage, alliances, construction, and station-related systems.

This does not prove that every planet will feel unique or that every player will prefer the loop. It means the official feature set is explicitly organized around repeated planetary and lifeform discovery.

Pick Starfield for system-scale travel emphasis

Starfield is the better-supported fit if the feature you are waiting for is open-space movement inside a star system. Free Lanes specifically adds cruise mode between planets and to points of interest, making the transit segment itself part of the documented experience.

The update also touches ships, outposts, gear, customization, and locations. Choose this direction if those systems matter as much as the destination, while recognizing that the cited announcement does not provide enough detail to score the depth or variety of each one.

Use a two-part decision test

  1. Name your primary verb. If it is discover, scan, dive, catalogue, or raise creatures, No Man’s Sky’s documented systems align more directly. If it is cruise, pilot between planets, or reach system points of interest through open space, Starfield’s Free Lanes feature is the closer match.
  2. Decide whether variety or route matters more. No Man’s Sky supplies explicit evidence of multiple planetary and environmental types. Starfield supplies explicit evidence of a new in-system travel mode.
  3. Check your secondary activities. For orbital building, salvage, alliances, and creature battles, the No Man’s Sky updates provide named systems. For ship, outpost, weapon, armor, and customization changes, Free Lanes identifies the relevant Starfield categories but not their full specifications.
  4. Ignore unsupported scorecards. Do not use planet counts, percentages, or claims about an objective winner unless a source provides and attributes those figures.

Current-update details and caveats

No Man’s Sky Cosmos, Update 7.0

The official Cosmos feature page does not show a publication date in the material available here. It should therefore be identified by its update name rather than assigned an unsupported date. Its documented features include station direction, alliances, orbital bases, derelict-hulk exploration, salvage, an interactive star-system map, navigational assistance, fixed revisitable points of interest, deep-space outposts, and long-haul flight to a system’s star.

No Man’s Sky Worlds Part II, Update 5.5

Worlds Part II is the source for the purple-class systems and the expanded environmental set: varied terrain, gas giants, water worlds, deeper oceans, water-bearing moons, and additional features. Its patch notes also qualify the rollout by stating that existing systems were not regenerated by the new purple-system terrain settings.

No Man’s Sky Xeno Arena

Xeno Arena is dated April 8, 2026. It adds raising, training, and battling alien creatures, with abilities and elemental affinities associated with species and homeworlds.

Starfield Free Lanes

Free Lanes is dated April 7, 2026 and identified as Update 1.16.236. Bethesda says it is available on all platforms and describes it as the game’s biggest update to that point. Its documented headline feature is cruise-mode travel in open space between planets and to points of interest within a system. The announcement also lists ship, outpost, weapon, armor, customization, and location changes, but it does not enumerate platform names or provide a comprehensive account of planetary exploration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What this comparison does not establish

There is no directly relevant comparative statistic in the cited official material. That means this article does not provide planet totals, percentages, travel-time benchmarks, encounter rates, or test-based rankings. It also does not claim that one game has objectively better planets, more meaningful exploration, or more satisfying gameplay.

The responsible conclusion is narrower and more useful: No Man’s Sky has the stronger documented case for procedural planetary and lifeform discovery, while Starfield has a newly documented cruise layer for travelling through open space in a system. Your preferred game depends on whether discovery and environmental variety or system-scale transit and equipment-focused play are the activities you value most.
