No-Log VPNs in 2026: Four Providers With the Clearest Evidence

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

Proton VPN has the most publicly inspectable no-logs evidence in this comparison. Its 2026 announcement describes a fifth consecutive annual Securitum review and links a technical report, while the 2025 Securitum document explains what auditors examined and excluded. NordVPN has a newer Deloitte assessment but limits the full report to account holders. ExpressVPN combines a KPMG assurance assessment with a company transparency report. Private Internet Access (PIA) offers a different type of evidence: a secondary reviewer says its no-logs policy has been tested in court twice.

This is not a universal ranking. A VPN can hide traffic from your internet provider or local network, but it transfers trust to the VPN operator. “No logs” is a policy and a description of system behavior, not a promise of anonymity. The useful questions are which systems were examined, when, by whom, how much of the report is readable, and what information the provider says it can supply in response to legal demands.

The evidence available for this guide supports four detailed profiles rather than forcing a fifth provider into an apples-to-oranges list. Audit scope, report access, jurisdiction, features, performance, and current terms should all be checked before subscribing.

The four no-log VPNs at a glance

Provider Evidence described in current disclosures Report access Important qualification
Proton VPN Fifth consecutive annual Securitum no-logs review announced in 2026; a public 2025 Securitum report details methods and exclusions. Provider announcement and the 2025 report are publicly readable. The published technical report is a point-in-time review of examined production infrastructure, not a guarantee about every future system.
NordVPN Sixth independent no-logs audit announced in February 2026. Deloitte examined interviews, infrastructure, configurations, and deployment processes from November 10 to December 12, 2025, under ISAE 3000 (Revised). NordVPN says the complete report is available to signed-in Nord Account users. Readers without an account cannot inspect the full report, so the public announcement is a summary.
ExpressVPN KPMG assessed TrustedServer and privacy-policy claims as of February 28, 2025, under ISAE (UK) 3000 Type 1. The provider says the assessment gave reasonable assurance with no identified issues concerning safeguards against activity logging. A summary is public; the full report is available after acknowledging KPMG terms. Its January–June 2026 request figures are provider-reported transparency data, not an independent audit finding.
Private Internet Access TechRadar’s 2026 review says the no-logs policy has been proven in court twice. The evidence cited here is secondary reporting rather than a current public technical-audit report. TechRadar also noted performance and connection issues; court history does not establish that every present configuration is unchanged.

These services were not tested under one standardized laboratory protocol. AV-TEST’s 2025 comparison offers independent context on performance and features, but its test sample and period cannot identify one best VPN for every user.

What “no logs” actually means

When a VPN is active, websites generally see the VPN server’s address instead of the customer’s home address, and the local network sees an encrypted connection to the VPN rather than each destination. The operator running that server can still become the party capable of observing, retaining, or correlating information. The privacy decision is therefore a transfer of trust, not a disappearance of trust.

A no-logs claim can cover different data categories. A provider might say it does not retain browsing destinations, DNS queries, traffic contents, or connection metadata that identifies a user. That wording must be read alongside the systems and processes an assessor actually examined. Account records, payment records, support tickets, security telemetry, fraud controls, and other ancillary systems may be outside a VPN-server audit.

No audit proves that a company can never change its software, infrastructure, staff, policies, or legal obligations. A useful report names the auditor, assessment dates, tested environment, procedures, exclusions, and the form of assurance. A slogan without those details is weak evidence.

Provider profiles and the evidence behind each pick

Proton VPN: the clearest public audit trail

Proton’s 2026 provider announcement describes a fifth consecutive annual Securitum no-logs review and links a technical conclusion. The publicly available 2025 Securitum report gives the most detailed view in this group of how a reviewer approached a production VPN environment.

Securitum says its work included documentation review, interviews, live inspection of randomly selected servers, review of configuration and deployment processes, and checks for data leakage. Its conclusion, as quoted by Proton, states: “The technical evidence reviewed during the engagement did not indicate that the examined Proton VPN server infrastructure logs users’ browsing activity, DNS queries, destination services, network traffic contents or user-identifiable connection metadata. Securitum also did not identify persistent records that would allow Proton to associate a specific user with activity performed through a reviewed VPN server.” The wording is deliberately bounded to the examined infrastructure and engagement.

The same report lists important exclusions. It did not cover Proton’s continuous-integration and continuous-deployment pipeline, formal source-code review, ancillary systems such as accounting or account management, or static and dynamic analysis of client and server binaries. Securitum characterizes the result as point-in-time validation. Those limitations do not erase the finding; they tell you what the finding can support.

Proton’s July 2026 transparency report adds a separate legal-request data point. Proton says it had received 458 legally binding Swiss-authority orders since launching in 2017 and had been unable to provide the requested identifying information because it did not keep the relevant logs. This is Proton’s account of its records and legal handling, not a substitute for the technical assessment.

NordVPN: a recent independent check with restricted access

NordVPN announced its sixth independent no-logs audit in February 2026. According to the provider, Deloitte conducted the work from November 10 through December 12, 2025, examining employee interviews, server infrastructure, configurations, and deployment processes under ISAE 3000 (Revised).

The decisive transparency caveat is access: NordVPN says the full report is available to Nord Account users rather than the general public. A reader can evaluate the announced auditor, standard, dates, and broad subject areas, but cannot independently inspect every procedure, exception, or conclusion without signing in. That is materially different from a fully public technical report, even though it does not by itself show that the underlying controls are weaker.

NordVPN’s Trust Center supplies historical context about its independent-verification program. Treat that history as evidence that assessments have been commissioned over time, not as proof that a current system will behave identically in the future.

ExpressVPN: assurance assessment plus request reporting

ExpressVPN says KPMG examined its TrustedServer design and privacy-policy claims as of February 28, 2025. The engagement used ISAE (UK) 3000 Type 1, and ExpressVPN says KPMG provided reasonable assurance with no identified issues regarding technical safeguards against activity logging. The detailed report is available after a reader acknowledges KPMG’s terms, so the provider’s public summary and the underlying document should be distinguished.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ExpressVPN describes TrustedServer as RAM-based and says information is wiped when a server restarts. That architectural statement explains one mechanism intended to limit persistent data, but it is not by itself proof that no data can exist elsewhere in the service.

The provider’s January–June 2026 transparency report gives a second, different evidence stream: 137 government, law-enforcement, and civil requests, including three warrants, and zero requests that resulted in disclosure of VPN activity or connection logs. These are company-reported counts for a defined six-month period. They show what ExpressVPN says it held and disclosed in those cases; they do not turn request reporting into an independent audit.

Private Internet Access: court-tested claims, but a different evidence type

TechRadar’s 2026 review says PIA’s no-logs policy has been proven in court twice. That history can matter because a legal proceeding may test whether a provider can produce records when challenged. However, the statement is secondary reporting rather than a court docket reviewed here, and it is not the same as a current public technical audit of servers, deployment controls, and logging paths.

The same review noted performance and connection issues. Because no universal speed figure is established by the available evidence, treat that observation as a reason to test the service from your own locations and networks rather than as a fixed global rating. Court-tested history is useful context, not a guarantee that every present configuration remains unchanged.

How to judge a no-logs audit

1. Check who performed the work

Look for a named independent assessor and the assurance standard or methodology. “Audited” without an auditor, date, or standard leaves the reader unable to assess independence or rigor.

2. Check the dates and environment

Determine whether the review covered production VPN servers, a design document, a policy, or a combination. Proton’s public report, for example, describes live inspection of randomly selected production servers; NordVPN’s announcement names infrastructure and deployment processes; ExpressVPN’s summary addresses TrustedServer and policy claims. These are not identical engagements.

3. Read exclusions before interpreting the conclusion

Exclusions define the boundary of the evidence. A server review may not include account systems, billing, support tools, source code, client binaries, or deployment pipelines. If the report says “point-in-time,” do not translate it into a permanent promise.

4. Find out whether the full report is readable

Public access improves inspectability because readers can see procedures, exceptions, and wording. Proton’s 2025 report is public. NordVPN limits its full report to account holders. ExpressVPN describes access after acknowledgment of KPMG terms. Restricted access is a transparency limitation worth recording, but it is not conclusive proof of poor controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Separate audits from transparency reports

An audit assesses defined systems or controls. A transparency report describes legal requests and the provider’s stated response during a period. Proton’s 458 Swiss-authority orders and ExpressVPN’s 137 requests, three warrants, and zero disclosed VPN activity or connection logs are examples of the second category. They are valuable context, but they answer a different question from “what did an assessor inspect?”

How to choose and verify a VPN before relying on it

  1. Define the threat you are addressing. Decide whether the goal is reducing visibility for a coffee-shop network, limiting what an internet provider can see, protecting several household devices, or avoiding a provider’s retention of browsing records. A VPN does not make accounts, browser fingerprints, cookies, or endpoint malware disappear.
  2. Read the current privacy policy and audit notice together. Match the policy’s terms for activity data, connection metadata, diagnostics, and legal requests to the systems named in the audit. Flag any category that appears outside the reviewed environment.
  3. Record the audit date and access conditions. Save the assessor, engagement period, standard, exclusions, and whether the full report is public. This prevents an old or account-gated assessment from being mistaken for a current, fully inspectable one.
  4. Check local plan terms before paying. Prices, renewal rates, taxes, refund windows, simultaneous-device rules, supported platforms, and available servers can vary by country and change over time. None of those values should be treated as permanent from an older comparison.
  5. Install the official application and update it. Use the provider’s current app for your operating system, apply security updates, and review diagnostic or crash-reporting options before connecting.
  6. Enable protective settings that match your use. If the application offers a kill switch, DNS-leak protection, or automatic connection on untrusted Wi-Fi, read what each setting does and enable only the controls you need. Record the exact behavior you expect if the tunnel drops.
  7. Verify the connection from more than one network. Check the reported public address, DNS behavior, and whether applications reconnect outside the tunnel. Repeat on home broadband and a mobile or public network because routing and blocking can differ.
  8. Recheck after major changes. A new app release, server architecture, legal-request policy, or audit should trigger another review. No-log evidence has a date; it should not be treated as a lifetime certification.

Extending VPN coverage to a whole home

A router with built-in VPN support can place compatible household devices behind one tunnel, including devices that cannot run a normal VPN application. ExpressVPN Aircove is described as a Wi-Fi 6 router range with built-in VPN. Cure53’s February 2025 report documents a November 2024 assessment of Aircove V5 firmware, the router interface, and related components.

A router changes deployment convenience, not the trust model. The VPN operator still receives the tunnel traffic, and the router does not make users anonymous or protect compromised devices. Check which devices, guest networks, and local services are covered, and confirm how the router behaves if the VPN connection fails.

Can a VPN hand over your browsing history?

An operator can disclose records it actually holds and is legally required or permitted to provide. If it does not retain a particular browsing or connection record, it cannot hand over that nonexistent record; Proton and ExpressVPN make claims of this kind in their respective transparency disclosures. That does not answer every privacy question: a provider may hold other account or operational information, and legal obligations differ by jurisdiction.

The practical test is therefore two-part: identify what the provider says it retains, then examine independent evidence about the systems where that information could be created or stored. An audit, a transparency report, and a privacy policy each illuminate a different part of that answer.

Limits readers should keep in mind

  • No anonymity guarantee: Websites can still identify you through logins, cookies, browser characteristics, and behavior.
  • No permanent certification: Every assessment covers a date, systems, and procedures; future deployments can differ.
  • No identical scoring: The four profiles rely on different evidence types and disclosure levels, so an audit count is not a standardized league table.
  • No universal performance result: Distance, congestion, protocol, device, and network conditions change results. AV-TEST’s 2025 measurements are tied to its own test setup.
  • No substitute for endpoint security: A VPN cannot remove malware, repair unsafe accounts, or prevent a service you log into from knowing your identity.
