In the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, mutations in the TSO1 component disrupt floral development, shorten seed pods and, in severe cases, cause complete sterility.
The findings establish a genetic and molecular link between cell-cycle control and reproduction. They do not show that the complex alone sets seed number in every plant, nor do they provide a crop-breeding product or treatment for improving fertility.

What the DREAM-like complex does
Animal DREAM complexes coordinate genes that control cell proliferation. Arabidopsis contains homologs of most DREAM components, and plant studies indicate that several related complexes operate in different tissues and conditions. TSO1, encoded by At3g22780, is a nuclear protein with two cysteine-rich CXC repeats. Its domain architecture resembles LIN54, the DNA-binding component of animal DREAM/DRM complexes.

That resemblance is more than a structural clue. A 2023 study in Development identified a regulatory module in which Arabidopsis TSO1 and MYB3R1 work together. The module includes the cyclin gene CYCA3;4, linking TSO1 activity to the machinery that drives cell division in shoot meristems and developing reproductive organs.
#1 Best Overall
What happens when TSO1 is mutated
| Genetic background | Flower and pod phenotype | Fertility outcome |
|---|---|---|
| tso1-1 (severe allele) | Floral organs fail to differentiate and can remain as callus-like tissue | Completely sterile |
| tso1-3 (weaker allele) | Flowers look comparatively normal, but siliques are very short | Severely reduced fertility |
| Wild-type comparison | Normally differentiated floral organs and developed siliques | Reference condition; no universal seed number is implied |
The 2011 PLOS Genetics study showed why “fewer offspring” must be read as a phenotype description rather than a single percentage. The severe tso1-1 mutation prevents the reproductive structures from forming correctly, so the plant is sterile. The weaker tso1-3 allele allows flowers to form but produces very short seed pods and drastically lowers reproductive output. The studies did not report one headline-wide percentage that applies to all TSO1 mutations or all plants.
How cell-cycle control connects to seed production
Meristem division sets the developmental starting point
Flowers are built from actively dividing meristem cells. If cell-cycle regulators are mismanaged, floral organs may fail to become distinct tissues. TSO1 and MYB3R1 appear to help regulate this transition, while the CYCA3;4 cyclin provides a direct connection to cell-cycle progression.
Rank #2
CYCA3;4 provides genetic evidence
In the 2023 study, mutations in cyca3;4 suppressed the shoot phenotype of tso1-1. Suppression does not mean that the cyclin is a fertility cure; it indicates that the TSO1 defect is functionally connected to cell-cycle machinery. The result supports a pathway in which altered proliferation contributes to the abnormal reproductive development.
DREAM proteins also respond to DNA damage
Reproduction is only one part of the network’s apparent role. A 2021 Life Science Alliance study reported Arabidopsis homologs for every DREAM component and described multiple DREAM complexes acting with NAC044 during growth arrest after DNA damage.
Plants carrying mutations in NAC044, either of the two LIN37 homologs or E2FB showed reduced sensitivity to DNA-damaging conditions. In other words, disrupting parts of this regulatory system changed how growth was shut down under stress. The authors summarized the finding as follows: “Our work indicates the existence of multiple DREAM complexes that work in conjunction with NAC044 to mediate growth arrest after DNA damage.”
This stress-response evidence broadens the biological picture. A network that controls when cells divide, stop dividing or recover after damage can influence the development of reproductive organs without acting as a simple seed-counting switch.
How this differs from other seed-fertility pathways
A 2026 Nature Plants paper described TIE1-family repressors associating with FIS–PRC2 to prevent fertilization-independent endosperm development. That pathway is relevant to plant seed and fertility regulation, but the finding does not place TIE1 in the DREAM complex. Endosperm control and TSO1-linked floral development should therefore be treated as separate mechanisms unless future work demonstrates a direct connection.

- Established: Controlled Arabidopsis genetics connect TSO1, MYB3R1 and CYCA3;4 with floral development, cell-cycle regulation and fertility.
- Not established: The same mutations, effects or fertility changes occur in field crops.
- Not demonstrated: Altering DREAM components can be used as a consumer treatment or as a validated commercial breeding product.
- Practical interpretation: The work identifies possible targets and mechanisms for future plant-breeding research, but translation will require species-specific experiments and assessment of yield, stress tolerance and reproductive stability.
For laboratory study, the directly relevant organism is Arabidopsis thaliana. Seed performance depends on genotype, growth conditions and the particular allele, so a result from tso1-1 cannot be generalized to every plant with a TSO1-like gene.

Why the “fewer offspring” headline needs qualification
In these experiments, offspring means successfully formed seeds or seed pods in defined mutant backgrounds. The strongest outcomes are categorical: complete sterility for tso1-1 and severe fertility reduction with very short siliques for tso1-3. No single offspring-loss percentage was established across the studies. The most defensible conclusion is that a DREAM-like module may play a key role in plant fertility by coordinating the cell divisions and developmental decisions required to make a functional flower.
