Check whether Ubuntu detects the audio hardware
Audio detection has two related parts: the system must see the audio controller, and the Linux audio stack must identify the codec connected to it. A controller appearing in the PCI device list does not by itself confirm that the codec or motherboard’s analog jacks are working. Open Terminal and list detected PCI audio devices:

Check for codec information exposed by ALSA:

If the codec files do not exist or the commands return no relevant device, save that result along with your board model, Ubuntu release, and kernel version. Codec-specific settings are not interchangeable. Ubuntu’s troubleshooting guidance cautions against assuming that a configuration for one codec or machine applies to another.

If the device appears, check the playback route
A detected audio device can still produce silence when Ubuntu selects a different endpoint or the onboard analog port is not active. In Ubuntu’s sound settings, inspect the chosen output device and profile. If the system also lists GPU HDMI or DisplayPort audio, make sure playback is routed to the onboard analog output when using the motherboard’s audio jacks.

Open the available mixer controls and check that the relevant playback channels are not muted and their levels are not at zero.

If you need additional controls, pavucontrol can expose port and profile choices when it is available on your system. A historical Ask Ubuntu answer for a Gigabyte X299 Gaming 7 with an ALC1220 says selecting the analog or headphone port in pavucontrol restored rear analog output. That is a useful setting to inspect, not a confirmed fix for an MSI board. See the different-board report.
Test microphone capture independently
Speaker playback and microphone capture are separate paths. A working or detected output does not prove Ubuntu has selected or enabled the microphone input.

Check the input level and mute state in the available mixer controls. Make sure the capture channel is enabled and its level is raised.

If the microphone is missing despite a detected codec, record the codec and subsystem identifiers along with the board model. Compare only with reports for sufficiently similar hardware; Ubuntu’s HDA microphone troubleshooting page offers legacy pointers and advises seeking newer guidance.
Do you need a driver download or BIOS update?
Do not install MSI’s Windows Realtek package as an Ubuntu driver. MSI’s cited audio-support guidance is part of its Windows-oriented support flow, while Ubuntu uses the Linux kernel’s ALSA/HDA audio stack. MSI’s audio support guidance does not establish that its Windows software is suitable for Linux.
The matching user report asks whether a BIOS update is needed, but the available sources do not establish a BIOS update as the remedy for this problem. Treat a BIOS change as a separate, model-specific decision rather than a first troubleshooting step.

Its guidance favors reporting a failure when the default configuration and documented model options do not match. Do not add arbitrary snd_hda_intel model options without evidence for your exact codec and subsystem.
