Why are trains being rerouted to Hoboken?
Amtrak and NJ TRANSIT are moving rail traffic from the century-old Portal Bridge to the new Portal North Bridge over the Hackensack River. The fall cutover transfers the final track and requires trains to operate on a single track between Newark and Secaucus. Work includes reconfiguring and activating track, signaling, power, and communications systems, followed by testing and commissioning safety systems. The new bridge is a two-track fixed-span structure 50 feet above the river. Unlike the old swing bridge, it allows marine traffic to pass underneath without stopping rail traffic. Improved reliability and capacity are project goals; they should not be read as independently measured outcomes.

Temporary schedules started Sunday, Oct. 11, 2026. The cutover is scheduled to finish Saturday, Nov. 14, and regular schedules are expected Sunday, Nov. 15, subject to safety testing. NJ TRANSIT says all rail lines except the Atlantic City Rail Line have schedule changes, so check your line’s current timetable before departing.

This is the second cutover, not the spring diversion. The first phase began Feb. 15; its first track entered passenger service March 16, and regular NJ TRANSIT schedules were expected March 15, subject to testing. That phase is over.
How can Hoboken-bound riders continue to Manhattan?
For eligible Midtown Direct riders during the weekday diversion, NJ TRANSIT lists cross-honoring on these connections. Each goes to a specific endpoint, not every stop or route operated by that service.

Ferry service is enhanced during peak periods, but NJ TRANSIT warns that alternative services have limited capacity and can be significantly crowded at peak times. The agency advises checking schedules, allowing extra time, and considering off-peak travel.
What ticket should you use?
Ticket handling depends on fare type and whether you travel on a weekday or weekend. NJ TRANSIT provides separate directions for monthly and weekly passes, FLEXPASS, and one-way tickets on its cutover guidance page. In general, affected pass customers are directed to use Hoboken as their destination during the cutover, while weekday one-way riders are directed to buy to Hoboken; eligible fares are then cross-honored on the named connections. Weekend trains go directly to Penn Station, so one-way riders need a Penn Station destination. Check the agency’s current instructions for exact validity and any additional fare before travel.

What changed in the first cutover?
The February–March phase transferred one track to the new bridge. The active fall phase transfers the final track and uses the single-track arrangement between Newark and Secaucus. The reroute is a temporary construction measure, not a permanent route change.
Amtrak’s March 12, 2026 release quoted NJ TRANSIT President and CEO Kris Kolluri saying the Newark-to-New York segment carries more than 400 trains and more than 200,000 NJ TRANSIT and Amtrak riders each weekday. That figure is attributed to Kolluri in Amtrak’s release; it is not a separate measurement of the bridge project’s results.
