Short answer: the published minimum target for Nivalis Nights is 1080p at 30 frames per second on the Very Low preset, while the recommended target is 1440p at 60 FPS on High. Both targets assume native resolution with no upscaling, 16 GB of memory, DirectX 11 and 42 GB free on an SSD. They are developer guidance rather than guarantees for every PC, because drivers, background software, thermal limits and in-game settings change the result.
Official Nivalis Nights PC requirements
The Steam system-requirements listing is the controlling specification for the Windows PC version. It defines two hardware tiers and attaches a resolution, frame-rate and quality target to each one. Those targets are not independent benchmark results; they describe what the developer intends each tier to deliver under its stated conditions.

A system can satisfy one part of a tier and miss another. For example, having a recommended graphics card does not turn a much older processor, insufficient memory or a hard disk into a recommended configuration. Treat the rows as complete combinations, not as a promise attached to one component.

What the two performance targets actually mean
Minimum: 1080p at 30 FPS on Very Low
The minimum row is designed around a 1,920×1,080 output, a 30-FPS goal and the Very Low preset. “Native resolution” means the game renders at the selected display resolution rather than rendering internally at a lower resolution and enlarging the image. “No upscaling” means the target does not depend on DLSS, FSR or another reconstruction mode.
#1 Best Overall
- Powered by NVIDIA DLSS 3, ultra-efficient Ada Lovelace architechture, and full ray tracing
- 4th Generation Tensor Cores: Up to 4x performance with DLSS 3
- 3rd Generation RT Cores: Up to 2x ray tracing performance
- Powered by GeForce RTX 4070
- Integrated with 12GB GDDR6X 192-bit memory interface
Thirty FPS is a baseline for a playable experience, not a promise that every scene will remain at exactly 30. Busy areas, effects, streaming and background activity can produce dips. The developer describes the requirements as a rough guide and says that drivers, settings and other programs running on the PC affect results.
Recommended: 1440p at 60 FPS on High
The recommended row raises both image quality and output resolution: 2,560×1,440, 60 FPS and the High preset. It still assumes native rendering without an upscaler. A 60-FPS target generally provides noticeably smoother camera movement than the minimum target, but it remains a stated objective rather than a measured guarantee for every location or configuration.
The High preset is a starting point, not an instruction to leave every individual option untouched. If one setting causes a sharp performance cost, lowering that option can preserve most of the visual quality while reducing the load.

Laptop graphics cards need special caution
Mobile GPUs with familiar names are not equivalent to desktop cards carrying similar numbers. Laptop power limits, cooling, firmware and memory configurations vary widely. The Steam listing explicitly warns that mobile GPUs perform below their desktop equivalents.
For the minimum tier, the listing names an RTX 4050 Laptop with 6 GB VRAM. For the recommended tier, it names an RTX 4080 Laptop or RTX 5080 Laptop with at least 12 GB VRAM. These are the publisher’s listed laptop examples; they do not establish that every laptop using one of those names will match a desktop part or reach the target in all circumstances.

- 3 x DisplayPort 1.4a, 1 x HDMI 2.1a, DirectX 12 Ultimate, Vulkan RT API, Vulkan 1.3, OpenGL 4.6
- Check the exact laptop designation, not just “RTX 4050” or “RTX 4080” in a retailer headline.
- Confirm the laptop has the listed VRAM and 16 GB system memory.
- Expect lower performance on battery power and in thin systems with restricted cooling.
- Use the dedicated GPU rather than an integrated graphics adapter when the system offers a choice.
How to check whether your PC qualifies
- In Windows, open Settings → System → About and note the processor and installed RAM. Compare the CPU model with the appropriate row above.
- Open Settings → System → Display → Advanced display to confirm the monitor resolution and refresh rate you intend to use.
- Identify the graphics processor and VRAM in Settings → System → Display → Advanced display, Device Manager, or the GPU vendor’s control software. Match the exact desktop or laptop model to the listing.
- Make sure the game is installed on an SSD with at least 42 GB free. Leave additional headroom for Windows, shader caches and updates instead of filling the drive completely.
- Confirm that the PC runs a supported 64-bit Windows edition and has DirectX 11 available. The minimum row specifies Windows 10 64-bit; the recommended row specifies Windows 11 64-bit.
If your computer falls between the rows, use the minimum target as the safer starting point and adjust resolution, preset and individual options while monitoring frame time. Do not infer a guaranteed result from a component that happens to be faster in one specification category.
Best first settings for a smoother game
The developer’s recommended order is deliberately simple: lower the overall graphics preset first, then tune individual settings. This gives you a quick way to determine whether the problem is primarily rendering load rather than a driver, power or file issue.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStep 1: choose a sensible baseline
- Start at Very Low if your PC is near the minimum tier, or High if it is near the recommended tier.
- Use the display’s native resolution if the target image quality matters more than frame rate. The published targets assume native resolution.
- Run the same demanding area or activity after each change so that comparisons are meaningful.
Step 2: reduce the preset before chasing individual options
If frame rate is unstable, move from High to Medium or Low, or from Very Low to a higher setting only after performance is comfortably above your goal. Once the frame rate is acceptable, raise individual options one at a time. This avoids spending time changing several variables at once.
Step 3: watch for non-game bottlenecks
- Update the graphics driver supplied for your GPU.
- Close unnecessary applications, browser tabs, recording tools and overlays.
- Restart the game, and then restart the PC if the behavior persists.
- Check temperatures and clock speeds if performance declines after extended play; thermal throttling can make an otherwise adequate PC behave inconsistently.
These are troubleshooting recommendations from the developer, not tested guarantees of a particular FPS increase.
Laptop performance checklist
Power management can change laptop performance substantially. Before judging the hardware, apply the developer’s laptop-specific checks:
Rank #3
- AI Performance: 767 AI TOPS
- OC mode: 2632 MHz (OC mode)/ 2602 MHz (Default mode)
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
- Connect the laptop to AC power.
- Open Settings → System → Power & battery and select Best performance for the power mode.
- Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics, locate the game, choose Options, select the dedicated high-performance GPU and save.
- If the laptop includes NVIDIA or AMD graphics software, use its per-game profile to select the discrete GPU there as well.
- Play on a hard surface with unobstructed vents. If clocks fall as the machine heats, lower the preset and check the manufacturer’s cooling profile.
Windows may revert to an integrated adapter after an update or when the game is added manually. Confirm the selected adapter again if performance suddenly changes.

Verify the installation
Corrupted or incomplete files can look like a graphics problem. In Steam, go to Library → right-click the game → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. Let the process finish, then restart the game.
Separate a settings issue from a system issue
- If lowering the preset improves performance immediately, keep the lower preset and raise individual options gradually.
- If changing settings has little effect, check the selected GPU, power mode, drivers and background applications.
- If the game starts slowly or streams assets poorly, verify that it is installed on an SSD with adequate free space.
- If problems begin after a driver or game update, restart Windows and verify the files before making hardware changes.
Report a reproducible problem
If the issue continues, the developer asks for a support report containing what happened, where it happened, steps to reproduce it, the complete PC specifications and a screenshot or video when possible. A precise location and repeatable sequence are more useful than a general statement that performance is “bad.”
Upscaling, ultrawide and controller support
The developer says the current game does not support DLSS, FSR or other upscaling technologies. Do not look for an in-game upscaler when troubleshooting; the published minimum and recommended targets are explicitly native-resolution targets. Future support is being evaluated, but no release date or commitment has been announced.
The FAQ confirms full controller support and ultrawide-monitor support. The launch announcement confirmed GeForce NOW availability. At launch, Steam Deck did not have full support while the developer worked on improving the experience; that launch-era statement is not a current performance rating or a guarantee for every Steam Deck configuration. The FAQ also said Mac and Linux compatibility was not then being explored.

What the 2026 performance patches changed
October 1, 2026 patch
Official notes reported performance improvements affecting character actions, animations and physics. They also fixed a camera issue that could make performance gradually worsen each time a save was loaded. The announcement said additional work was underway.
October 2, 2026 update
A Lighting Details control was added. Lowering it limits active lights in the field of view by distance. The update also optimized characters by reducing bone weights on lower-detail models. The developer described both changes as performance improvements but did not publish a general FPS gain.
The same notes reported that fast travel to certain locations could affect performance on some systems. The stated workaround was to save after arriving and reload that save. The developer said a fix was being worked on. This is a dated report and workaround, not proof that every later build still has the issue or that reloading will fix every case.
A fan-maintained wiki updated October 9 summarized additional settings and patch information while distinguishing publisher-reported changes from its own FPS measurements; it reported no measured FPS improvement for the cited changes. Use newer official announcements if they differ. A PC Gamer review published October 7 listed a test system with an Intel Core Ultra 7 265, RTX 5070 Ti and 32 GB RAM, but that single review configuration is not a systematic benchmark and says nothing definitive about lower-tier PCs.
Should you upgrade your PC?
Start by identifying the component that prevents you from reaching the target. If the GPU is below the minimum class, a graphics upgrade is usually the most direct route to better image quality. The official recommended desktop examples are the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 and AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT, both with at least 12 GB VRAM. They are named options in the recommended row, not a requirement that every player purchase one.
Best Value
- Supported technology: Support for Nvidia DLSS 3, DLSS 2, ultra-efficient Ada Lovelace arc, full-beam tracking, NVIDIA Reflex, GeForce Experience and all NVIDIA Studio applications
- Core & Clocks: Boost Clock 2490 MHz, Memory Size 12GB, Memory Type GDDR6X, Memory Bus 192-bit
- Cooling: Windforce cooling system, 3 x 80 mm unique blade fans, Alternative spinning, screen cooling, Graphene Nano lubricant extends the life of the sleeve bearing fan and it is quieter than ball bearings.
- Visuals: 8K Ready, 4 Display Ready, HDCP 2.3, VR Clear
- I/O and Connectivity: PCIE 4.0, 3 x DisplayPort 1.4a, 1 x HDMI 2.1a, DirectX 12 Ultimate
Before buying hardware, check the complete platform:
- Verify that the power supply has the connectors and capacity required by the replacement GPU.
- Measure case clearance and confirm adequate airflow.
- Check whether the motherboard and CPU can support the card without creating a severe processor bottleneck.
- Confirm that the system already has 16 GB RAM and an SSD with 42 GB free.
- For a laptop, the GPU generally cannot be replaced; compare the exact laptop model with the listed mobile examples instead.
If your PC already meets the recommended row but performance is poor, investigate drivers, power mode, overlays, thermals, files and the dated fast-travel issue before replacing parts.
Bottom line for different PC owners
Near the minimum tier
Target 1080p, Very Low and 30 FPS first. Keep background software closed, use an SSD and make sure the game selects the dedicated GPU on a laptop.
Recommended Free Tools
Near the recommended tier
Start at 1440p and High, then lower the preset or individual options if demanding scenes dip below your preferred frame rate. Native rendering is the published target because upscaling is not currently available.
Above the recommended tier
Extra GPU or CPU headroom may let you raise individual settings, but the developer has not published a higher official target or a universal FPS guarantee. Judge changes in the areas where you actually play, and keep the troubleshooting steps available after patches or driver updates.
