NIT Rourkela’s Jackfruit-Peel Material Removes Over 90% of Fluoride in Lab Tests

Researchers at the National Institute of Technology Rourkela have converted discarded jackfruit peel into zirconium-modified activated carbon that rapidly captures fluoride from water. The work is a laboratory-validated material, not yet a household filter or commercially available cartridge.

What NIT Rourkela developed

The team associated with Professor Susmita Mishra and research graduate Dr Pratima Minz first made activated carbon from waste jackfruit peel. They then modified the carbon with zirconium to improve its ability to capture fluoride. The resulting solid functions as an adsorbent: fluoride in contaminated water attaches to the treated carbon rather than remaining dissolved.

Mishra described the objective as turning an agricultural waste stream into a water-purification resource. The approach combines a locally available biomass feedstock with a chemical modification intended to improve fluoride capture, but the published reports do not establish that every jackfruit-peel batch will perform identically.

How much fluoride did it remove?

Reported tests used water containing approximately 1–5 milligrams of fluoride per litre. Under those laboratory conditions, removal efficiencies were about 90–97% after contact times of 10–20 minutes.

Test condition Reported result Qualification
Fluoride concentration Approximately 1–5 mg/L Laboratory test range reported by the NIT Rourkela team
Contact time 10–20 minutes Time allowed for the material to interact with the test water
Fluoride removal About 90–97% Reported 2026 laboratory efficiency, not a guarantee for untreated groundwater

Those figures show that the material can work quickly at the tested concentrations. They do not reveal how many litres a fixed quantity can treat, how performance changes as the carbon becomes saturated, or whether other substances in groundwater reduce fluoride uptake.

What the estimated ₹37-per-gram cost covers

The research team reported an estimated synthesis cost of approximately ₹37 per gram, calculated from electricity and chemical inputs. This is the cost estimate for making the material under the team’s assumptions, not the price of a finished filter.

The team planned a physical prototype and further work on long-term performance, deployment feasibility and operating costs. The reported results therefore support continued engineering and pilot testing, rather than an instruction to substitute the material for a certified fluoride treatment system.

Can consumers buy the NIT Rourkela material?

No consumer retail product using this exact zirconium-modified jackfruit-peel material is identified in the available reports. A generic activated-carbon cartridge, fluoride filter or test kit should not be presented as the NIT Rourkela invention.

What still has to be tested

Before the adsorbent could be judged for routine groundwater treatment, developers would need evidence on the following points:

  • Field durability: whether the material retains its performance through extended operation outside controlled laboratory water.
  • Treatment capacity: the total volume treated and the fluoride loading reached before breakthrough.
  • Competing ions: how common groundwater constituents affect fluoride capture.
  • Regeneration or replacement: whether the carbon can be safely reused, how often it must be changed and how spent material is handled.
  • Finished-water quality: whether zirconium or other chemicals leach into treated water and what verification is required.
  • Operating economics: energy, chemicals, reactor or cartridge design, labour and maintenance in a real installation.

None of these performance measures is established by the reported 10–20-minute laboratory tests.

How to interpret it alongside existing fluoride-treatment methods

The available reports do not provide enough comparable data to calculate a numerical advantage over reverse osmosis, activated alumina or ion-exchange systems. A fair comparison would require the same influent fluoride level, treated volume, contact time, removal target and water chemistry.

Comparison measure Status for the jackfruit-peel material
Removal efficiency About 90–97% in the reported laboratory range
Contact time 10–20 minutes in those tests
Capacity and breakthrough Not stated in the cited reports
Regeneration or replacement interval Not stated
Waste generation and disposal Not stated
Delivered-water cost Not established; ₹37/g is only a synthesis estimate
Field validation Not yet demonstrated; reported readiness is TRL-4

Earlier jackfruit-peel research

NIT Rourkela repository material documents related earlier work by Minz and Mishra using zinc-chloride-impregnated jackfruit-peel activated carbon for dye removal. That work helps explain the material-development pathway, but dye removal is a different application and does not prove fluoride performance.

What the result means now

The significant result is a promising waste-derived adsorbent that removed roughly nine-tenths or more of fluoride quickly under specified laboratory conditions. Its next milestone is not another headline percentage; it is a tested prototype that establishes capacity, durability, safety, operating cost and performance in real groundwater.
