The NiSi 16mm f/2.8 ASPH is a sharp, well-built prime for Fujifilm GFX photographers who need an exceptionally broad view and are comfortable with manual focus and a camera workflow that does not record lens settings. Its defining advantage is also its limitation: the 118-degree-plus field of view can make everyday scenes feel crowded. Buy it for a specific ultra-wide use, not simply because a smaller focal length sounds more versatile.
What the NiSi 16mm f/2.8 is—and how wide it looks
This is a manual-focus medium-format prime made in separate Fujifilm GFX G-mount and Hasselblad XCD mount versions. NiSi lists a 16mm focal length, f/2.8 maximum aperture, f/22 minimum aperture, 0.25m minimum focus distance, 180-degree focus throw, and a clicked eight-blade aperture ring. The optical design is 16 elements in 12 groups, including three aspherical and four ultra-low dispersion elements. The lens has a metal body and mount, weather sealing, and an 82mm filter thread. NiSi’s specifications are on its US product page.

NiSi claims a field of view beyond 118 degrees and a full-frame equivalent near 12.6mm. Those figures describe a very wide perspective: foreground objects can dominate, while a large amount of the surrounding scene fits in the frame. The result is useful when a photographer deliberately wants that expansive look, but it can also pull distracting edges and competing details into a composition.

The 0.25m minimum focus distance makes close foreground work possible. Put a detailed object near the camera and the ultra-wide perspective can make it appear especially prominent against a distant background. That flexibility does not make the lens an all-purpose wide angle; the broad view still demands careful framing.

Image quality: capable, with a better result stopped down
Jeremy Gray of PetaPixel tested the G-mount version on a Fujifilm GFX 50S. In his review, he found the lens fairly sharp at f/2.8, with some fringing and vignetting. He saw resolution improve noticeably at f/4 and f/5.6. These are observations from his review sample, not a guarantee for every copy or camera body. NiSi’s own claims about edge-to-edge resolution and aberration control should be treated as manufacturer claims rather than independent findings.
Astrophotography and vignetting
Gray found that stars were mostly circular, although occasional aberrations appeared. He considered vignetting the more significant issue, and difficult to correct in post-processing. In his view, the lens can serve GFX astrophotographers willing to manage that processing work, particularly in a system with few astro options. It is a capable option, not a promise of effortless night-sky results.

Manual operation and GFX setup
The NiSi has no electronic communication with the camera. On the GFX 50S used by Gray, the camera needs “shoot without lens” enabled. The body does not receive aperture information from the lens, so the aperture is not reported in-camera or in EXIF; photographers must read it from the lens barrel.

The trade-off is that intermediate aperture settings are difficult to reproduce precisely without electronic reporting. If your workflow depends on recorded lens data or quick camera-controlled settings, this is a meaningful inconvenience rather than a minor specification omission.

Filters: an 82mm thread, with a vignetting caveat
The lens has a standard 82mm front filter thread, and NiSi says it includes a custom 95MAG adapter ring for stacking filters. Gray nevertheless found that some 82mm screw-in filters he tried caused vignetting. A filter fitting the thread does not guarantee that it will avoid darkening the image at this field of view, so check the specific filter and configuration before relying on it. Larger filters also add expense.
How it compares with the practical alternatives
The closest alternatives discussed by PetaPixel are Fujifilm’s GF 23mm f/4 R LM WR prime, GF 20-35mm f/4 R WR zoom, and TTArtisan 17mm f/4 tilt-shift. The Fujifilm lenses give up some width and maximum aperture but add autofocus, electronic communication, and Fujifilm corrections. The TTArtisan is slower, but provides tilt and shift for perspective control. The comparison below summarizes the distinctions described in the reviews and product listings; current prices can change.

The NiSi makes the most sense when its extra width and f/2.8 aperture matter more than autofocus, recorded lens data, or tilt-shift control. For a photographer who wants one flexible wide lens for varied scenes, the zoom’s framing range and electronic workflow may be more useful. For architecture or other work that benefits from perspective adjustment, tilt-shift is a distinct capability the NiSi does not offer.

Maybe. Buy the NiSi if you already know you want an exceptionally wide GFX prime, value f/2.8, and accept manual focus, absent aperture metadata, and the need to manage vignetting. It is also compelling when close foreground emphasis or a very broad astrophotography view is the specific goal.

Choose another option if you need autofocus and camera-recorded aperture data, prefer a zoom’s framing flexibility, or need tilt-shift movement. Gray’s concise verdict captures the lens’s appeal: “It does something few other lenses do, and does it well.” Its specialty is real; whether that specialty belongs in your kit depends on how often you want the whole scene to come in at once.
