Nintendo says it wants Switch 2 to offer a diversity of gaming experiences, but that does not confirm a version of Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar’s current game page lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a November 19, 2026 release date; it does not list Switch 2. That means no Switch 2 launch platform has been announced on Rockstar’s current page—not that a later port is impossible.
What Nintendo said about Switch 2’s game variety
In a 2026 report republishing a Variety interview, Nintendo of America president Devon Pritchard said: “We want to provide a diversity in terms of the types of experiences that you can have on the game system, and that’s really important for us.” The report’s headline said Nintendo could not confirm whether Grand Theft Auto VI would release on Switch 2. The wording describes Nintendo’s broad aim for the system; it is not an announcement of a GTA VI deal, rejection, or platform plan. Read the reported interview.

Nintendo had described a similar goal before. In an official developer interview published April 2, 2025, development lead Takuhiro Dohta said: “From the beginning of development, we wanted Switch 2 to be a console that can be enjoyed by a wide variety of players.” He also said, “We believe the act of finding the game you want to play is itself part of the game console experience.” These comments speak to the breadth of the console’s intended audience and library, not the status of any one third-party game. Which platforms has Rockstar announced for GTA VI?
Rockstar’s official Grand Theft Auto VI page, checked October 9, 2026, says the game is coming November 19, 2026, and lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Switch 2 is not included in that platform listing. Rockstar also describes Jason and Lucia in the state of Leonida and labels PlayStation 5 as the system the game “Plays Best On.” Check Rockstar’s current GTA VI page.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
The careful conclusion is limited to what Rockstar has announced there: the page does not name Switch 2 as a launch platform. It does not establish that the game could never arrive on Nintendo’s system later.

Nintendo has discussed compatibility with the existing Switch library as part of Switch 2’s broader game experience. In the 2025 interview, Takuhiro Sasaki said Nintendo was checking more than 10,000 Switch games one by one for compatibility. That is an interview statement about the library-check process, not a current count of games confirmed to be fully compatible. Nintendo’s developers also cautioned that some titles might not be supported or might not be fully compatible. Nintendo’s explanation of compatibility.

- The next evolution of the Nintendo Switch system

- Supports up to 4K resolution** when using a compatible game and TV connected via the included Nintendo Switch 2 dock
- Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.***
That backward-compatibility work is separate from a platform announcement for a new Rockstar game. It does not confirm that GTA VI is coming to Switch 2, nor does it establish anything about the game’s technical performance on the system.

What the available announcements establish
- Nintendo has described a goal of offering Switch 2 players a wide variety of experiences.
- Rockstar’s current GTA VI page lists PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a release date of November 19, 2026.
- That page does not list Switch 2, so a Switch 2 launch version has not been announced there.
- The absence of a listing is not proof that a later port will never happen.
