Nintendo Switch Won’t Connect to Wi‑Fi? How to Fix It

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by checking whether other devices can use the same network, then place the Switch within about 10 feet (2–3 meters) of the router, restart the console and network equipment, reconnect the saved network, and run Test Connection. The result—missing network, rejected password, failed internet test, or NAT error—determines the next fix.

1. Do the safe, quick checks first

  1. Test a phone or laptop on the same Wi‑Fi. If no device reaches the internet, troubleshoot the modem, router, ISP, or managed network before changing Switch settings.
  2. Move the Switch to within approximately 10 feet (2–3 meters) of the router. Remove nearby metal objects and electronic interference. If the console is docked, take it out temporarily.
  3. Confirm Airplane Mode is off.
  4. Restart the Switch.
  5. Unplug the modem and router. If the modem has a battery backup, disconnect it so the modem fully powers down. Wait at least 30 seconds, reconnect the modem first, wait for its lights to stabilize, then reconnect the router.

Nintendo gives this placement and restart guidance in its 2110-3129 troubleshooting instructions.

2. Reconnect to the wireless network

  1. Open HOME → System Settings → Internet → Internet Settings.
  2. Select the correct network name (SSID).
  3. Enter the password exactly, including capitalization.
  4. Choose Change Settings to review or recreate the connection if the saved profile is outdated. Original Switch menus may call these Registered Networks; Switch 2 may call them Saved Networks.
  5. Select Test Connection.

Record the error code, NAT type, connection status, and download/upload results. Joining the router does not prove that DNS, the ISP, or Nintendo services are reachable.

3. If the Wi‑Fi name does not appear

  • Rescan from Internet Settings (press Y where that control is shown).
  • Confirm the router’s Wi‑Fi radio is enabled and the SSID is being broadcast. For a hidden SSID, use the manual option Connect to a Hidden Network; temporarily broadcasting the name is simpler for testing. See Nintendo’s manual wireless setup.
  • Try the router’s separately named 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks. A 2.4 GHz signal usually travels farther; 5 GHz can be less congested but is more affected by walls.
  • Move the router and Switch away from cabinets, speakers, cordless phones, microwave ovens, and other sources of interference.
  • Test the main router network rather than a guest network, extender, or mesh node. Update router firmware if an update is available.

Do not assume one Wi‑Fi band works identically for every Switch model and router. If the SSID remains invisible on several known-working networks, hardware or system software becomes more likely.

4. If the password is rejected

  • Verify the password by connecting another device to the same SSID.
  • Make sure you selected the intended network when nearby names are similar.
  • Delete or recreate the Switch connection, then type the password again rather than relying on an old profile.
  • Check the router’s security mode and access controls. Use a normal, secure home configuration; do not disable encryption.
  • Guest, hotel, school, and enterprise networks may require a browser sign-in, account, device registration, or authentication method the Switch cannot complete.

5. If Wi‑Fi connects but the internet test fails

The Switch may have an IP connection to the router while DNS, the gateway, ISP access, a captive portal, or Nintendo’s services remain unreachable.

  1. Confirm other devices can browse through that router and check for an ISP outage.
  2. In Change Settings, return manually entered IP, DNS, proxy, and MTU values to the network’s normal settings unless an administrator supplied specific values.
  3. For a diagnostic DNS test, open DNS Settings → Manual, enter 8.8.8.8 as Primary DNS and 8.8.4.4 as Secondary DNS, save, and run Test Connection. Nintendo documents these Google Public DNS addresses for troubleshooting in its 2110-3129 guide. They are not a guaranteed fix; restore Automatic afterward if they do not help or if the network administrator requires different DNS.
  4. Check Proxy Settings. For an ordinary home network, use Off unless a proxy is required and you have its server details.
  5. Check MTU. Nintendo recommends the default 1400 for most home networks; do not experiment randomly. Restore 1400 if a special value worsens the connection. See the 2110-3150 guidance.

6. Understand the connection-test result

What you observe Likely area
No device has internet access Modem, router, ISP, or account outage
Switch cannot see the SSID Distance, interference, hidden SSID, band/channel, or router radio
SSID appears but password fails Password, saved profile, security mode, or network authentication
Switch joins Wi‑Fi but internet test fails DNS, proxy, MTU, captive portal, router, ISP, or service access
Hotspot works but home Wi‑Fi does not Home router, ISP, DNS, security, or interference
Several unrelated networks fail Console settings, software, or wireless hardware
Wired works but Wi‑Fi fails Wireless environment or console Wi‑Fi settings/hardware

7. When only online multiplayer fails

If browsing and downloads work but a game cannot host or join matches, run Test Connection and note the NAT type. Strict NAT can limit some activities, and the other player’s NAT type or the game’s servers may also be involved. Nintendo explains these interactions in its NAT troubleshooting guide.

  • 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲- Supports Nintendo Switch, PCs, laptops, Ultrabooks, tablets, and other USB-powered web devices; works with network equipment including modems, routers, and switches.
  1. Restart the modem and router.
  2. Check whether two routers are operating in series (double NAT). Use bridge or access-point mode where appropriate.
  3. Ask the ISP whether carrier-grade NAT is in use.
  4. Only after those checks, consult router-specific instructions for port forwarding or a DMZ. These settings are not first-line Wi‑Fi repairs and can reduce network security.

8. Test with a phone hotspot

Enable a hotspot only if your phone, carrier, plan, and signal support tethering, then connect the Switch to it. If it works, the Switch radio is probably functioning and the home network is the leading suspect. If it fails there too, investigate console settings, software, or hardware. Hotspots can have restrictive NAT, higher latency, and substantial data usage, so treat this as an isolation test rather than a permanent gaming solution.

9. Try a wired connection

  • An OLED dock has a built-in LAN port.
  • An original dock without a LAN port needs a compatible USB LAN adapter.
  • Switch Lite requires additional compatible equipment for a wired setup.
  • Switch 2 can use the LAN port on its dock. Configure Wi‑Fi as well if you will use the console undocked, because a wired-only setup has no connection away from the dock.

Nintendo’s wired requirements are described for the original family in its 2110 error overview and for Switch 2 in the Switch 2 wired setup. A successful wired test isolates Wi‑Fi interference from broader internet problems.

10. Public, hotel, school, and work networks

Captive-portal terms, room-number logins, MAC registration, enterprise authentication, client isolation, blocked ports, or restricted DNS can prevent a Switch from completing setup. Ask the administrator whether Nintendo Switch is supported, use a permitted phone hotspot, or use a personal travel router where allowed. Do not bypass institutional controls.

11. Error-code pointers

  • 2110-3000 through 2110-3999: broad wired or wireless connection failures; use the specific code’s instructions.
  • 2110-3129: often associated with DNS or network-environment problems.
  • 2110-3150: DNS, proxy, MTU, signal, and router troubleshooting.
  • 2110-4116: wireless drop or timeout symptoms; see Nintendo’s error guide.

Check Nintendo’s service-status and support channels before concluding that a router is defective. Do not assume an outage or a universal system-software version without current confirmation.

12. When to contact Nintendo

Contact Nintendo when the Switch cannot connect to multiple known-working networks, repeatedly fails beside the router, or fails on both a hotspot and a suitable wired connection after settings are restored. Escalate promptly if the issue followed liquid damage, impact, overheating, or a repair. Do not open the console or replace its wireless module yourself.
