In the United States and Canada, a Nintendo Switch console and Nintendo accessories generally have a 12-month limited warranty from the purchase date. You need proof of purchase, and the warranty covers defects in materials or workmanship—not accidental, liquid, cosmetic, modified, or unauthorized-repair damage. Nintendo decides whether an eligible product is repaired or replaced, and the service may use refurbished parts or a refurbished unit. Out-of-warranty or excluded repairs may be available for a fee, but Nintendo does not publish one universal U.S./Canada price list on its warranty pages.

What the 12-month Nintendo Switch warranty covers
The coverage period
Nintendo’s service information says the warranty on Nintendo hardware products, accessories and Nintendo-published games lasts one year from the date of purchase. The formal warranty describes this as twelve months from purchase and applies to the original purchaser’s product. The clock starts with the purchase date, not the date you first turn on the console or submit a service request.

The warranty is for defects in material and workmanship. Examples can include a component that fails under normal use, a console that will not power on because of an internal manufacturing defect, or an accessory that stops functioning without an external cause. Nintendo makes the final coverage determination after receiving the product and reviewing the circumstances and proof of purchase.

What you must show
Keep a dated receipt, invoice or other proof of purchase from an authorized retailer. Nintendo uses it to establish the warranty start date and decide whether the product is still within the 12-month period. Without acceptable proof, a claim can be treated as out of warranty even if the console appears relatively new.
Damage and actions that can void coverage
A warranty is not accidental-damage insurance. Nintendo states that physical damage is not covered, though the product may still be serviceable for a charge. The formal limitations also exclude or can void coverage for several other causes:
- Liquid or moisture damage.
- Accidents, negligence, unreasonable use or other external damage.
- Unauthorized parts, repairs or service.
- Unauthorized modification, tampering or alteration.
- Commercial use where the warranty is intended for consumer products.
- An altered, removed or unreadable serial number.
A cracked housing, bent connector, damaged charging port, liquid indicator or third-party repair therefore does not become covered merely because it appears during the first year. Describe the condition accurately when you contact Nintendo; concealing damage can complicate service and coverage decisions.
Repair versus replacement: what Nintendo actually promises
Nintendo controls the remedy
Nintendo’s factory-service terms make repair or replacement a discretionary decision. An eligible claim does not give you a right to demand a brand-new replacement, a particular color, or a specific internal part. Nintendo may repair the console or accessory, exchange it, or determine that paid service is appropriate if the fault is not covered.
Refurbished parts and products
The terms allow Nintendo to use refurbished parts or a refurbished product. Those parts or products must meet functional specifications for a new product, but they can have minor cosmetic defects. A replacement can therefore work to the required standard without being cosmetically indistinguishable from a factory-sealed retail unit.

Service warranty after the work
A repaired or replaced product receives a service warranty beginning when it ships back to you. That coverage lasts for 100 days or the remainder of the original manufacturer’s warranty, whichever period is longer. For example, a product serviced near the end of its original warranty receives at least 100 days of service coverage; a product serviced early may retain the longer remaining portion of its original warranty.
Saved-data risk
Nintendo warns that saved data may not be recoverable during service. A replacement console can have no copy of the data stored on the returned unit, and a repair may involve resetting or replacing storage-related components. Before shipping, use any available console-transfer, cloud-save or game-specific backup option and remove personal information where Nintendo’s instructions permit it. Do not assume that a service center will preserve every local save.

How much does Nintendo Switch repair cost?
United States and Canada
Nintendo says factory service may be available for a fee after the warranty expires or when the problem is excluded. The U.S./Canada pages do not provide one universal price table covering every Switch model, fault and accessory. Pricing is handled through the product-specific service process, where the diagnosis and current regional terms determine what you are offered.
That means an online number from another country, an old forum post or a price for a different component should not be treated as your quote. Ask Nintendo for the current amount before authorizing paid work, and compare the quote with the cost of a replacement console or accessory you can actually buy in your region. Shipping, taxes and the possibility of an unrepairable unit can affect the real cost.
Published United Kingdom maximums
Nintendo UK’s schedule effective 1 October 2021 lists maximum out-of-warranty prices. These are United Kingdom figures, not U.S. or Canadian prices, and they should be checked with Nintendo UK because the schedule is dated. The PDF says the maximum applies per item and that the final amount may be lower after diagnosis.

- This model includes battery life of approximately 4.5 - 9 hours.
- The battery life will depend on the games you play. For instance, the battery will last approximately 5.5 hours for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (games sold separately)
- Model number HAC 001( 01)
| Item | Published UK maximum | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch console | £120 | Out-of-warranty maximum, effective 1 October 2021; may be lower after diagnosis. |
| Nintendo Switch OLED console | £190.50 | Out-of-warranty maximum, effective 1 October 2021; per item. |
| Nintendo Switch Lite | £108 | Out-of-warranty maximum, effective 1 October 2021; may be lower after diagnosis. |
| One Joy-Con | £26.40 | Out-of-warranty maximum, effective 1 October 2021; charged per controller. |
Those figures cannot be converted into a current U.S. price by simply changing the currency. Region, tax, shipping, model, fault and Nintendo’s current service policy all matter.

| Decision factor | Official Nintendo service | Buying a replacement |
|---|---|---|
| Warranty eligibility | Best first option for a documented manufacturing defect within 12 months. | You pay even when a valid warranty claim might be free. |
| Damage type | Physical or liquid damage may be accepted only as paid service, if Nintendo can service it. | Immediate replacement avoids a service decision but does not recover a warranty benefit. |
| Proof of purchase | Needed for warranty review. | Needed only for the retailer’s or manufacturer’s separate terms. |
| Region | Use the Nintendo service channel for the country where you reside. | Availability and compatibility still depend on your market. |
| Price | Get Nintendo’s product-specific quote before approving paid work. | Compare the complete purchase cost with the quote, including accessories you must replace. |
| Turnaround and shipping | You must send the product and wait for diagnosis, repair or exchange and return shipping. | A replacement may be available immediately, but delivery and setup take time. |
| Data loss | Saved data may not survive service. | Local data on the failed console remains at risk unless backed up or transferred first. |
| Condition of the returned unit | Nintendo may supply refurbished parts or a refurbished product that meets functional new-product specifications and may show minor cosmetic defects. | You select the condition of the unit you purchase under that seller’s terms. |
For a likely manufacturing defect still inside the 12-month period, opening an official claim before spending money is usually the rational sequence. For a heavily damaged, older console, compare Nintendo’s quote and turnaround with a replacement only after you know what Nintendo will actually charge and whether your data can be saved.
How to send a Nintendo Switch to Nintendo for service
1. Troubleshoot before shipping
Nintendo instructs customers to troubleshoot first. Check the official support steps for the exact symptom, including power, charging, display, controller connection and software-related problems. A loose cable, depleted battery, incorrect input or system setting can mimic a hardware failure and may be resolved without shipping the console.
2. Open an official service request
Use Nintendo’s online service-request process or contact consumer support for your region. Do not mail the console on your own before Nintendo gives you service instructions; Nintendo expressly tells customers not to send products without contacting it first. The U.S./Canada process is intended for residents of those regions, while other countries use their own Nintendo support channels.
3. Gather the information Nintendo needs
- Proof of purchase from an authorized retailer.
- Console or accessory model and serial number, if readable.
- A clear description of the failure and when it began.
- Details of any impact, liquid exposure, modification or previous repair.
- Your contact and return-shipping information.
4. Follow the request’s packing and shipping instructions
Use the shipping label, packaging directions and inclusion list supplied in the service request. Send only what Nintendo asks for; unnecessary games, cases or personal items can be separated from the repair and may not be returned. Photograph the console and its serial number before packing, and retain the tracking number.

- 6.2” LCD screen.

5. Watch the request’s expiration date
Nintendo’s FAQ says a service request generally expires six months after it is set up. If you do not ship within that period, create a new request rather than sending an old label or outdated authorization.
6. Review the result before accepting paid work
For a non-covered or out-of-warranty issue, read the diagnosis and price carefully. Confirm whether the quoted amount is for the listed item, whether return shipping or taxes are additional, and what happens if you decline service. A paid-service offer is not the same as a warranty approval.

The Switch will not turn on during the first year
Complete Nintendo’s power and charging troubleshooting, then start a service request with your dated proof of purchase. If Nintendo finds an internal defect and the exclusions do not apply, the issue may qualify for warranty service. Do not promise yourself a new console: Nintendo chooses repair or replacement.
The console was dropped or has a cracked screen
Drop and impact damage is outside the warranty. Contact Nintendo anyway to ask whether paid factory service is available for that model and damage. Get the quote before deciding whether repair or replacement is better.
The console was exposed to liquid
Liquid damage is excluded from warranty coverage. Power it down, avoid repeated charging attempts and contact Nintendo for a service assessment. Do not open the unit or use an unauthorized repair shop if you want Nintendo to evaluate it under its own service terms.

- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
A Joy-Con has stopped working
Joy-Con controllers are Nintendo accessories covered by the same warranty framework when the fault is eligible. Use Nintendo’s Joy-Con service-request path, provide proof of purchase where requested and describe whether there is drift, impact, liquid exposure or another symptom. A replacement controller purchased separately is not a substitute for an eligible warranty claim.
The serial number is damaged or missing
Nintendo lists altered or removed serial numbers among the warranty limitations. Photograph the serial number before shipping if it is readable, and tell support if the label is worn rather than attempting to recreate or replace it.
Regional and timing limits to keep in mind
The 12-month terms and service-request instructions discussed here are for the U.S./Canada framework described by Nintendo. A console bought in one country and used or submitted in another may be subject to different warranty eligibility, shipping rules or import costs. Use the support site for your residence and ask how an imported unit will be handled before sending it.
The UK price schedule is specifically dated 1 October 2021. It is useful as a published example of regional maximums, not as a current global price promise. Nintendo can change fees, request procedures and available service by model and country.
Bottom line
Start with Nintendo, not a third-party repair or an immediate replacement. In the U.S. and Canada, a documented manufacturing defect in the first 12 months can qualify for warranty service, but proof of purchase and the absence of excluded damage are essential. Nintendo may repair or replace the product with refurbished parts or a refurbished unit, and saved data may be lost. For accidents, liquid damage and older consoles, request a current regional quote and then weigh the total cost, turnaround, data risk and condition of any replacement.
