Nintendo Switch Sports vs. Wii Sports: Which Is Better for Local Multiplayer?

Neither game is the universal winner: Wii Sports is a straightforward pick if your group already has a Wii and Wii Remotes, while Nintendo Switch Sports suits Switch owners who want a broader sports lineup and simultaneous Bowling. The right choice depends on the hardware, sports and specific play mode your group will use.

Which game should your group choose?

Choose Wii Sports if you already own the Wii setup

If you have a Wii and enough Wii Remotes, the original Wii Sports offers five familiar sports without requiring a Switch. Nintendo UK lists it for one to four players. It was released on 8 December 2006, according to Nintendo UK’s 2006 announcement.

Choose Nintendo Switch Sports for its newer lineup and simultaneous Bowling

Switch owners get eight sports in Nintendo’s current product information, including Golf and Basketball, which were added after launch. Bowling is the clearest advantage for groups that would rather play at once than wait for turns: Nintendo says all players can bowl simultaneously. That feature should not be assumed for the other sports.

Let your preferred sport decide

The games do not share the same roster. The original Wii Sports includes Baseball and Boxing; Switch Sports includes Volleyball, Badminton, Chambara, Soccer and Basketball. Both have Tennis, Bowling and Golf, but matching sport names do not establish identical rules or multiplayer configurations. If one sport is the reason your group is choosing, confirm its mode and player limit before buying or setting up.

How many people can play on one console?

Nintendo lists both games at 1–4 players overall: Wii Sports on the Wii listing and Nintendo Switch Sports on one Switch system. That range is a product-level summary, not a sport-by-sport guarantee. Nintendo’s Switch Sports support information specifically says the actual number playing simultaneously depends on the sport.

  • Use the Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball in Soccer
  • Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online

Switch Sports also supports a different setup: LAN play across up to four consoles, with up to two players per console, according to Nintendo Support. LAN play uses multiple consoles and is not the same as gathering four players around one Switch.

What controllers and setup do you need?

Wii Sports

You need the Wii and Wii Remotes; for Boxing, Nintendo specifies a Nunchuk alongside the Wii Remote. A game purchase alone is not enough if your group lacks the required hardware.

Nintendo Switch Sports

Controller requirements vary by sport. Nintendo lists supported arrangements that include paired Joy-Con, a single Joy-Con, and Joy-Con with a Leg Strap. The Leg Strap is relevant to supported Soccer play, not a universal requirement for the collection. Switch Sports does not support handheld mode. Nintendo lists TV and tabletop play among supported modes and notes that compatibility or play experience can vary on Switch Lite. See Nintendo’s Switch Sports FAQ for the controller and mode details.

Before playing, check the controller configuration for the particular sport and count the compatible controllers you already have. Whether extra hardware is needed depends on that setup; no current accessory prices or availability are established here.

Why launch-era Switch Sports lists may look different

Switch Sports launched on 29 April 2022 with Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara, as described in Nintendo’s launch announcement. Nintendo later announced Golf as a free update on 29 November 2022, adding 21 holes from the Wii Sports series and local play (Nintendo’s Golf update announcement). Basketball also arrived later; Nintendo’s current product listing now includes it in the eight-sport roster. So a launch review’s six-sport count is not the current listed lineup.

Make the decision based on what you already have

  • You own a Wii and Wii Remotes: Wii Sports is the direct choice for its five original sports and listed four-player range.
  • Your group owns a Switch and wants more sport options: Switch Sports has the broader current roster, with eight listed sports.
  • Your main concern is waiting for turns: Switch Sports Bowling supports simultaneous play for all players, according to Nintendo.
  • You need a specific player count or mode: verify that sport’s configuration rather than relying on the overall 1–4 listing.
  • You are buying hardware as well as a game: compare the complete console-and-controller setup you need, not just the game itself.
