Choose Wii Sports if you have a Wii and want Baseball or Boxing alongside the original five-sport lineup. Choose Nintendo Switch Sports if you have a Switch and want Soccer, Volleyball, Badminton, Chambara, or Basketball—or online competition. Both include Tennis, Golf, and Bowling, but they are separate games for different consoles.

How the sports lineups compare

Wii Sports launched on Wii in the UK on December 8, 2006. Nintendo’s listing describes five sports: Tennis, Baseball, Golf, Bowling, and Boxing. Nintendo’s Wii Sports listing

Nintendo Switch Sports launched on April 29, 2022. Its current product listing has eight sports. Golf was added after launch in a free update on November 29, 2022.

What the shared sports mean

The overlap is limited to Tennis, Golf, and Bowling. The games are not versions of the same title that run on different hardware: each has its own lineup and controls. Switch Sports also includes four sports absent from Wii Sports—Soccer, Volleyball, Badminton, and Chambara—as well as Basketball. Wii Sports, in turn, has Baseball and Boxing.

How controls and setup differ

Wii Sports: Wii Remote

Wii Sports uses the Wii Remote as a motion controller. Players swing it like a racket, bat, club, or bowling ball. Boxing uses a Wii Remote and Nunchuk, one for each glove.

Switch Sports: Joy-Con

Switch Sports uses Joy-Con motion controls. The physical edition includes a Leg Strap for some Soccer play; the strap is not needed for the whole game. Nintendo says the digital game and Leg Strap can also be bought separately. Nintendo Switch Sports product page

Local multiplayer and online play

Both games support local multiplayer. Nintendo’s UK Wii Sports listing gives a range of one to four players. For Switch Sports, Nintendo lists one to four players on a single system and one to two online. Those overall limits do not establish that every sport or mode supports the maximum number in the same way.

Switch Sports offers online competition, including matchmaking and rewards. Nintendo says online features require a Nintendo Switch Online membership, a Nintendo Account, and internet access; availability may vary by country. Nintendo Switch Sports product page

Instant Sports - Nintendo Switch
  • 6 sports: Baseball, run's jump, goalkeeper, tennis, bowling & rafting.
  • 20 characters to customize (change your name, outfit, accessories & hair)
  • Varied game modes - Solo or multiplayer for up to 8 players.
  • More than 15 environments and tons of unlockable items.

The Nintendo sources cited here do not establish an equivalent online mode for the original Wii Sports, so it should not be treated as having online play comparable to Switch Sports.

Which one should you play?

  • Pick Wii Sports if you own a Wii and want Baseball or Boxing, or specifically want its five-sport collection.
  • Pick Nintendo Switch Sports if you own a Switch and want Soccer, Volleyball, Badminton, Chambara, Basketball, or online competition.
  • If Golf is your priority, either includes it. Switch Sports Golf was added free after launch and includes 21 holes from the Wii Sports series.
  • If you are deciding what to buy, start with the console you own. Wii Sports is a Wii game; Switch Sports is a Nintendo Switch game. If you plan to use Switch Sports online, factor in the required Nintendo Switch Online membership.

Nintendo’s product information establishes the games’ features, but it does not provide a controlled comparison of enjoyment, motion accuracy, or value. The choice above is based on the console and sports or play features you want.
