For online multiplayer and a broader range of sports, Nintendo Switch Sports is the better fit. For a local party built around tennis, baseball, bowling, golf, and boxing—or for its training and fitness modes—the original Wii Sports may be the better choice. Couch play has no universal winner: the sports your group wants and the hardware you own decide it.
What changed between Wii Sports and Nintendo Switch Sports?
The sports lineup
The original Wii Sports features five sports: tennis, baseball, bowling, golf, and boxing, according to the historical reference page for the game. Nintendo’s current Nintendo Switch Sports product page lists eight: basketball, golf, Soccer, volleyball, bowling, tennis, badminton, and Chambara. Tennis, bowling, and golf appear in both; baseball and boxing do not appear in the current Switch Sports lineup.

Switch Sports’ eight-sport count is its current listed lineup, not what was available at its 2022 launch: Nintendo added golf and basketball in free updates. If your group mainly wants baseball or boxing, the original game has the edge; if it wants Soccer, badminton, volleyball, basketball, or Chambara, Switch Sports offers those instead.

Wii Sports uses Wii Remotes, with a Wii Remote and Nunchuk gestures for boxing. Nintendo Switch Sports uses Joy-Con motion controls. Nintendo Support says the game does not support handheld mode, that controller setup depends on the sport, and that Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible. Check the official Switch Sports FAQ for the specific sport and controller setup you plan to use.

For Soccer, the physical edition of Switch Sports includes a Leg Strap accessory, which Nintendo also sells separately. Nintendo Support says the Leg Strap is not compatible with Joy-Con 2 controllers. That compatibility detail matters if Soccer is a deciding reason to get the game.
How do the multiplayer options compare?
Local play
Both games are designed for local multiplayer, but their sports and controller systems differ. Nintendo says Switch Sports supports one to four players on one system overall; the exact format and controller needs vary by sport. That overall player range should not be read as a promise that every sport supports four players in the same way.
Rank #2
- Swing, kick, spike, and bowl your way to victory in 7 sports
- Play Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara (swordplay)
- Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements
- Use the Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball in Soccer
- Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online
Wii Sports is a natural fit for local play if your group already has Wii hardware and wants the original sports. Its golf and bowling can be played by taking turns with one Wii Remote, according to the historical reference page. Wii Sports requires a Wii and Wii Remotes; it is not a substitute that runs on a current Switch console.

Online play is the clearest multiplayer advantage for Switch Sports. Nintendo lists online play for one or two players per system, with random matchmaking, private play with friends, Pro League ranks, rotating cosmetic rewards, and some options to team up locally against online opponents. Nintendo describes the latter this way: “Play each sport online, or team up with a friend on the same system to take on opponents near and far in team sports like Basketball, Volleyball and Tennis.”

- Challenge your family or friends and may the best player win
- Multiple game modes available: Quick match or Tournament / Team mode or Solo
- Explore a multitude of environments! Volcano / Desert / Snowy countries
- Unlock new costumes and choose to play with motion or buttons on NSW
An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for online play, according to Nintendo Support. Nintendo’s UK product page also describes a 16-player bowling knockout; that format is region-page documentation, not a guarantee that every online mode uses the same player count.

| If your priority is… | Better fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Online matchmaking, playing friends remotely, and league progression | Nintendo Switch Sports | Online play requires Nintendo Switch Online; online player limits are one or two players per system. |
| More sports in the current lineup, especially Soccer, badminton, volleyball, basketball, or Chambara | Nintendo Switch Sports | Nintendo currently lists eight sports; golf and basketball were added after launch in free updates. |
| The original five: tennis, baseball, bowling, golf, and boxing | Wii Sports | You need Wii hardware and Wii Remotes. The original also includes training challenges and a fitness test, according to the historical reference page. |
| Local play on hardware you already own | Depends on your console and controllers | Wii Sports requires a Wii setup; Switch Sports requires a Switch and compatible Joy-Con configuration. Sport-specific needs differ. |
If the group wants one straightforward answer, choose Switch Sports when online play or its newer sports are important. Choose Wii Sports when the original five and its training or fitness modes are the draw and you already have the Wii setup. For couch play alone, pick by sport rather than assuming one game is objectively better.
