Choose Nintendo Switch Sports if you want motion-controlled sports, an active living-room format, or several different activities for a family gathering.
The title “Nintendo Switch Sports Resort” is not Nintendo’s official game name. The game is called Nintendo Switch Sports. This comparison uses that official title. The two games also require different hardware: Mario Kart World is a Nintendo Switch 2 game, while Nintendo Switch Sports is a Nintendo Switch title that Nintendo says is supported on Switch 2 with behavior consistent with the original Switch version.

What each game actually offers
Nintendo Switch Sports: eight motion-controlled sports
Nintendo currently lists Basketball, Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara. The activities use physical gestures and timing rather than a conventional button-only control scheme. That makes the game easy to demonstrate in a shared room, but it also means that the exact multiplayer experience depends on which sport you choose.

Some activities naturally support several people taking turns, while others have different simultaneous-player requirements. Nintendo’s headline product specification is 1–4 players on one system and 1–2 online; it should not be read as a promise that every sport has the same capacity. Nintendo’s local-area-network guidance specifically warns that simultaneous player limits vary by sport.
Mario Kart World: racing, battles and free exploration
Mario Kart World is centered on driving rather than a collection of separate sports. Nintendo’s multiplayer materials describe Grand Prix, Knockout Tour, VS Race, Battle and Free Roam. That gives a group several ways to play without changing to a different activity: structured race cups, elimination-style events, custom races, battles and open exploration.
The game launched on June 5, 2025, for Nintendo Switch 2. Its modes are designed around a broad range of group sizes, from a few people sharing one system to large online sessions.

Player limits and connection types
| Game and connection | Nintendo-listed capacity | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Mario Kart World, one system | 1–4 players | All players use the same Nintendo Switch 2. |
| Mario Kart World, local wireless | 2–8 players | Players use nearby consoles connected wirelessly. |
| Mario Kart World, online | 2–24 players | Online play requires internet access, a Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online. |
| Mario Kart World, LAN | Up to 24 players | Nintendo documents a wired setup using docked consoles and Ethernet equipment. |
| Nintendo Switch Sports, one system | 1–4 players | The actual simultaneous limit depends on the sport. |
| Nintendo Switch Sports, online | 1–2 players | The product listing gives this as the online headline limit. |
| Nintendo Switch Sports, LAN | Up to 8 total players | Nintendo describes up to four consoles, with two players on each; sport-specific limits still apply. |
These are product specifications, not measurements of matchmaking quality, latency or enjoyment. Nintendo’s published limits establish how many connections a mode is designed to support, not how responsive a particular household network will feel.
How many people can play Mario Kart World on one Switch 2?
Nintendo lists 1–4 players on one Nintendo Switch 2. That is the clearest choice when four people are physically together and each wants to race in the same session without bringing additional consoles.
For more than four people, the options change. Local wireless supports 2–8 players across nearby systems. Online play expands the published limit to 24 players, so friends can join from different locations. Nintendo also documents a LAN configuration for up to 24 players, but that is a deliberate event setup rather than a casual living-room arrangement.
One-system session
- Use a Nintendo Switch 2 with Mario Kart World installed.
- Open the game’s multiplayer selection and choose the mode your group wants: Grand Prix, VS Race, Battle, Knockout Tour or Free Roam.
- Connect and assign controllers for the people sharing the console.
- Choose the number of local participants allowed by the selected mode, then start the session.
The supplied specifications do not identify a required controller model or state whether every mode uses exactly the same local arrangement, so check the on-screen instructions for the mode you select.

- Play Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara (swordplay)
- Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements
- Use the Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball in Soccer
- Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online
Local wireless with nearby consoles
Local wireless is the practical middle ground when more than four people are together but a full wired network is unnecessary. Nintendo lists 2–8 players. Each participating console and copy of the game must be prepared for the wireless session, and players should remain within normal wireless range of one another.
Online play
Online play is the route to the largest listed group. Nintendo says the mode supports 2–24 players and requires internet access, a Nintendo Account and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Every participant should confirm those requirements before the planned session; otherwise the group may be reduced to local or wireless play.
LAN play for organized events
Nintendo’s support instructions describe a wired LAN arrangement for up to 24 players. Each console must be docked and connected by Ethernet. The setup also requires additional consoles, copies of the game, docks, Ethernet cables, a router and potentially a network switch. This is useful for a club, tournament or large gathering where predictable wired connections matter, but it involves substantially more equipment than ordinary local wireless play.
Can you play Nintendo Switch Sports with friends online?
Yes. Nintendo lists online play for 1–2 players and requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. The two-player online limit is separate from the one-system headline limit, so a group should not assume that four people on one console can all join the same online session.

Nintendo’s LAN guidance allows up to eight total players across up to four consoles, with two players per console, but again cautions that sport-specific limits apply.
Same-console setup
- Check that the chosen sport supports the number of people you want to involve at the same time.
- Prepare enough compatible Joy-Con-family controllers for those participants.
- Launch Nintendo Switch Sports and select the sport and local multiplayer option.
- Follow the game’s controller prompts, then begin the match or rotation.
Because the activities do not all use the same simultaneous-player rules, select the sport before promising a particular format for the whole group.
Online setup
- Make sure each online participant has internet access and Nintendo Switch Online.
- Open the game’s online multiplayer option.
- Invite or join the other player through the available Nintendo account and in-game prompts.
- Confirm the selected sport’s player arrangement before starting.
LAN setup
For a multi-console room, Nintendo’s documented arrangement is up to four consoles and two players on each, for up to eight total players. Use the LAN instructions in the game’s support information, and verify the chosen sport’s simultaneous limit before the event begins.

Which is better for family game night?
Choose Nintendo Switch Sports when the room is the main feature
Nintendo Switch Sports is the stronger family-game-night choice when people want to stand up, swing, kick or react physically. Its eight activities create variety without requiring the group to learn a completely different game. Bowling, Tennis, Badminton, Volleyball, Soccer, Golf, Basketball and Chambara also let a host switch pace when one activity stops holding attention.
The trade-off is planning. The game’s headline player counts do not apply identically to every sport, and the controller requirement is more specific than simply handing someone a standard gamepad. A host should decide the sport first, then check the number of simultaneous players and available Joy-Con-family controllers.
Choose Mario Kart World when everyone wants the same competitive loop
Mario Kart World is the better fit when the group wants races, battles or exploration and does not want to rotate through different sports. Four people can share one Switch 2, while larger groups can move to local wireless, online or a wired LAN event depending on their equipment.
It is also the more natural option for a geographically distributed group because Nintendo publishes a much larger online capacity. The downside is platform access: anyone without Nintendo Switch 2 cannot join a one-system session on the original Switch hardware.
Do you need a Switch 2 for Mario Kart World?
Yes. Nintendo identifies Mario Kart World as a Nintendo Switch 2 title. An original Nintendo Switch does not satisfy that platform requirement.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need extra Joy-Con controllers for Nintendo Switch Sports?
You need enough compatible Joy-Con-family controllers for the sport and number of people you want to play simultaneously. Nintendo states that Switch and Switch 2 Pro Controllers are not compatible with Nintendo Switch Sports. If your console does not already have enough compatible Joy-Con controllers, additional controllers may therefore be necessary for a four-person local session.

- 20 characters to customize (change your name, outfit, accessories & hair)
- Varied game modes - Solo or multiplayer for up to 8 players.

Soccer has an additional requirement: Nintendo says the Leg Strap is required for some Soccer gameplay. The official Nintendo site says the Leg Strap is sold separately where applicable. Check the specific Soccer mode and your regional packaging before buying accessories.
Online membership, accounts and network planning
Nintendo Switch Online
Nintendo requires Nintendo Switch Online for online play in both games. This requirement does not apply to ordinary same-console play, but it does apply when participants connect over the internet. Each player should also meet the account and internet requirements stated for the relevant online mode.
Internet versus LAN
Internet play is the simplest way to connect people who are not in the same place, but performance depends on each participant’s connection. LAN play keeps the consoles in one physical network and, for Mario Kart World, Nintendo’s documented arrangement uses wired Ethernet from docked consoles. LAN is therefore a useful option for an organized event, not a substitute for having the required consoles, game copies and networking hardware.
Count equipment before inviting the group
- For Mario Kart World, count Nintendo Switch 2 consoles, game copies and the connection method you intend to use.
- For Nintendo Switch Sports, count compatible Joy-Con-family controllers and check the sport-specific player limit.
- For online sessions in either game, confirm Nintendo Switch Online and internet access in advance.
- For Soccer in Nintendo Switch Sports, determine whether the chosen gameplay requires a Leg Strap.
A practical decision checklist
- Start with the hardware you already own. If the group has no Switch 2, remove Mario Kart World from a one-console plan.
- Choose the physical format. Pick Nintendo Switch Sports for motion-controlled activity; pick Mario Kart World for seated or controller-based racing and battles.
- Count simultaneous players, not just guests. A large guest list does not mean everyone can participate in every sport at once.
- Decide whether the group is local or remote. Mario Kart World has the larger published online capacity; Nintendo Switch Sports lists 1–2 online players.
- Check accessories. Sports requires compatible Joy-Con-family controllers and may require a Leg Strap for some Soccer gameplay.
- Reserve LAN for the right event. A wired 24-player Mario Kart World setup needs multiple docked consoles and networking equipment, so it is best planned as an organized gathering.
What the published specifications do not tell you
The player limits establish supported configurations, but they do not establish which game has better matchmaking, lower latency or greater enjoyment for a particular age group. Those outcomes depend on the people playing, their network conditions, controller supply and the sport or mode selected.
Likewise, the 1–4 figure for Nintendo Switch Sports is not a universal per-sport promise, and the 24-player figure for Mario Kart World does not mean that a single console can display 24 local racers. Use the connection-specific limits and the mode instructions when planning an event.
Verdict
For most four-person sessions on one console, Mario Kart World is the clearer multiplayer recommendation if everyone has access to Nintendo Switch 2: its racing modes are consistent, and it scales from one-system play to much larger online groups. For a family game night built around movement, variety and shared-room participation, Nintendo Switch Sports is the better choice, provided you have the required Joy-Con-family controllers and select a sport whose simultaneous-player limit matches your group.
