Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is an upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 game that combines familiar sports with new activities and an explorable Wuhu Island setting. Its announced marine-bike event gives it a Wave Race-like hook, but it is not a Wave Race revival. Nintendo has scheduled the game for October 22, 2026; as of October 7, it has not been released, so whether it earns the “best of” comparison remains untested.
What is Nintendo Switch Sports Resort?
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is a new, Nintendo Switch 2-exclusive motion-controlled sports game. It is separate from Nintendo Switch Sports, the earlier game released for the original Nintendo Switch in 2022. Nintendo announced the new title for October 22, 2026, making it an upcoming release as of October 7, 2026. Nintendo’s announcement and its Japanese product page identify the platform and release date.

The “best of Wii Sports, Wave Race, and more” framing is a useful shorthand for the mix Nintendo has announced, not an official claim about the game’s quality or a promise that a particular older game is included. The Wii Sports comparison comes from familiar motion-controlled sports; the Wave Race comparison comes from a marine-bike activity.
What sports and activities are in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort?
Nintendo’s Japanese product page lists 12 activities:

The page’s count of 12 does not match its 13-item list, so it is best to treat the named activities as the product page’s announced lineup and the count as Nintendo’s stated figure, rather than silently dropping an activity. Nintendo’s June 10, 2026 announcement also describes 12 motion-controlled sports. The Japanese product page is the source for the names; Nintendo’s announcement gives the stated count.
Familiar sports and new twists
Tennis, bowling, volleyball, table tennis, basketball and golf make the lineup recognizable to players who have enjoyed Nintendo’s earlier sports games. Archery, boxing and thumb wrestling broaden the competition, while skateboarding, a propeller plane and jump rope push the package beyond conventional court and field sports.
Is Wave Race in the game?
No Wave Race game is confirmed as part of Nintendo Switch Sports Resort. Nintendo lists a marine bike activity, which is the basis for describing it as Wave Race-like or reminiscent of that series. The announcement does not establish that the activity is licensed from, or a revival of, Wave Race.

How do Wuhu Island and progression work?
The game is set on Wuhu Island, a location familiar from earlier Nintendo games. Nintendo says players can explore the island, chase dolphins, look for hibiscus flowers and collect Spocco Photos tied to sightseeing spots. That gives the announced package a roaming, vacation-island layer alongside its individual sports.
Nintendo has also announced Island Crown, an offline mode where players rise through rankings in each sport and challenge Island Champions and Island Legends. In its September 15, 2026 announcement, Nintendo described it this way: “A new offline Island Crown mode lets you rise through the ranks in each sport to challenge Island Champions and even Island Legends.”
Nintendo says players earn Spocco Points by playing any sport in any mode, then exchange those points for character customization. The announcement establishes the currency and its stated use, but not the full range of unlockables or how quickly points are earned.

How does it compare with Wii Sports Resort and the 2022 Switch Sports?
The announced overlap with the Wii Sports family is its accessible, motion-based sports mix; the difference is the broader set of activities and the Wuhu Island exploration layer. Those details make the comparison understandable, but they do not establish whether the new game will match the feel, variety or replay value of Wii Sports Resort. That judgment has to wait until the game is available to play.

Do not confuse the new game with Nintendo Switch Sports, released April 29, 2022. Nintendo’s UK product page lists eight activities for that older game after updates: Football, Tennis, Badminton, Basketball, Volleyball, Bowling, Golf and Chambara. Its golf update added 21 holes drawn from the Wii Sports series; that figure applies to the 2022 game, not the upcoming Resort title. Nintendo’s UK page for the older game documents its lineup and update history.
The older game’s accessory details also should not be carried over by assumption. Nintendo says the Leg Strap works with soccer in Nintendo Switch Sports, and that Joy-Con 2 controllers are not compatible with that strap. Those are statements about the older title and accessory, not confirmation that Sports Resort supports or requires a Leg Strap. Nintendo Support’s Leg Strap FAQ covers the older game.

What do you need to play, and is Nintendo Switch Online required?
You need a Nintendo Switch 2: Nintendo lists the upcoming game as a Switch 2 exclusive. Joy-Con 2 motion controls are part of the announced play experience. Nintendo lists both download and packaged editions in Japan; availability and purchasing details can differ by market, and the Japanese listing does not establish local pricing or preorder availability.
Nintendo says an internet connection and paid Nintendo Switch Online membership are required for online play or certain features. That does not mean every mode requires a subscription: Nintendo specifically announces Island Crown as an offline mode. Check the final local product listing for the exact online features and regional requirements.

If you have a Nintendo Switch 2 and want a motion-controlled sports collection with both familiar events and unusual additions, the announced lineup may be appealing. The island exploration, ranked offline challenge mode and marine-bike event give it more than a simple list of sports on paper. If you are hoping for a new Wave Race, however, Nintendo has announced only a marine-bike activity, not a Wave Race game.
There is not yet a review-based answer to whether it is worth buying: the scheduled release date is October 22, 2026, and the game is unreleased as of October 7. Treat the announced features as a preview, not a tested verdict. The strongest reason to wait for reviews is that the available information describes activities and modes but cannot establish how well they play or how much variety they offer in practice.
