Nintendo Switch Sports Resort Preview: What’s New on Wuhu Island

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is an upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 game that brings a 12-sport collection back to Wuhu Island, with announced exploration, photo collecting and offline rankings alongside the matches. Nintendo has scheduled it for October 22, 2026. That date is still in the future, so this is a preview of Nintendo’s announced features—not a hands-on assessment of how the controls or activities feel.

What is Nintendo Switch Sports Resort?

Nintendo describes Nintendo Switch Sports Resort as a new, Nintendo Switch 2-exclusive entry in the series, returning players to Wuhu Island. The earlier Wii Sports Resort also used Wuhu Island as its setting, but Nintendo’s current announcements do not establish that the new game recreates the old map or brings back specific locations. Nintendo’s June 12, 2026 announcement and its Wii Sports Resort manual support the connection at the setting level.

Nintendo says the game is scheduled to launch on October 22, 2026. Until release, the announced descriptions can explain what the game is intended to include, but they cannot settle questions about control accuracy, balance, stability or how engaging the activities are over time.

Which sports are included?

Nintendo lists 12 sports. Its descriptions outline the intended actions, but they are publisher descriptions rather than independently verified impressions of play.

Nintendo also mentions Jump Rope as a warm-up activity. It has not identified Jump Rope as one of the 12 listed sports, so it is best treated separately unless Nintendo clarifies its status. See the official US listing and the June announcement for Nintendo’s descriptions.

What can players do on Wuhu Island?

Nintendo’s September announcement presents the island as more than a setting between matches. It says players can explore Wuhu Island, chase dolphins, search for hidden hibiscus flowers and collect Spocco Photos that describe sightseeing spots. Nintendo has not specified the island’s full size, the number of activities or collectibles, or how these activities work in detail.

Island Crown and progression

In offline Island Crown mode, players rise through sport rankings to challenge Island Champions and Island Legends. Playing sports also earns Spocco Points, which Nintendo says can be exchanged for character customization items. The announcement establishes those progression elements, but not the amount of content or how long it takes to unlock items.

These features give the announced game an island-activity layer alongside its sports, but the available details are not enough to judge how substantial or replayable that layer will be. Nintendo’s September 15, 2026 announcement is the source for the exploration, collectibles, Island Crown and Spocco Points details.

How do motion controls and multiplayer work?

Nintendo says the sports use Joy-Con 2 controls, with specific announced approaches including mouse controls for Skateboarding, handlebar-style steering for Power Cruising and controller tilting for Prop Plane. Those descriptions explain the intended input, not how precise or comfortable it will feel in practice.

The US product listing specifies local play for one to four players in TV and tabletop modes. It says each multiplayer participant needs one compatible controller and that additional controllers may be required. Nintendo has not specified a complete controller setup for every sport and mode in the material cited here, so groups should check the current regional listing and the relevant mode requirements before buying extra controllers.

Nintendo Australia’s listing says handheld mode is not supported. Since mode details can vary by regional listing, verify the listing for your country before purchase. The relevant pages are Nintendo’s US listing and Australian listing.

What do online play and the Switch 2 bundle include?

Online features

Nintendo’s US listing says online features require an internet connection and a Nintendo Account. Online play requires a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership; Nintendo also notes that availability and terms may vary by country. The listing identifies Save Data Cloud as a feature that also requires paid membership. Check the current local listing for the terms that apply where you live.

Console bundle

Nintendo’s US listing for the Nintendo Switch 2 + Nintendo Switch Sports Resort bundle describes a Switch 2 console, a full digital download of the game and a three-month Nintendo Switch Online Individual membership. The announced game copy is digital; the listing does not say the bundle includes a boxed game. Nintendo Australia has also announced the bundle. See the US bundle listing and Australian announcement.

Which editions and prices have been announced?

Nintendo Japan’s June 10 announcement says packaged and download editions are planned for Japan, at ¥6,980 and ¥5,980 respectively. These are Japan-specific prices; they do not establish pricing in the US or other regions. Check Nintendo’s local store or your preferred retailer for the formats and prices available where you live. The Japanese announcement is available at Nintendo Japan.

The choice depends on what you already own and how you prefer to buy games: the console bundle is an option for people who need a Switch 2, while the standalone game is relevant to existing Switch 2 owners. The announced Japanese packaged and download prices should not be used to compare those options outside Japan.
