Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive scheduled for October 22, 2026, and it is not yet available. Early hands-on reactions are favorable, especially to the spread of motion-controlled sports and the island that connects them. Calling it 2026’s best multiplayer game, however, is one previewer’s current judgment based on a partial session, not an established result. Nobody has yet shown how the twelve sports hold up over months of play.
What Nintendo has confirmed
- Platform: Nintendo says the game is only on Nintendo Switch 2. Its Australian product page reads: “Play 12 different sports using intuitive motion controls in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, only on Nintendo Switch 2.” (Nintendo Australia product page)
- Release date: Nintendo lists October 22, 2026 on its Australian and Canadian pages (Nintendo Canada store page).
- Regional scope: The details here come from Nintendo’s Australian, Canadian and Singaporean materials. Online availability in particular may differ by country.

Local multiplayer
One system supports one to four players. The game supports TV and tabletop modes. Nintendo says handheld mode is not supported, so group play happens on a TV or with the system set up on a table.
Controllers
Multiplayer requires one compatible controller per player, and additional controllers may be required. The listings do not establish what comes in the box, so check the package contents before assuming extra controllers or wrist straps are included.
Rank #3
- The ultimate game that brings together 30 different sports
- Challenge your family or friends and may the best player win
- Multiple game modes available: Quick match or Tournament / Team mode or Solo
- Explore a multitude of environments! Volcano / Desert / Snowy countries
- Unlock new costumes and choose to play with motion or buttons on NSW
Safety setup
Nintendo Canada’s page advises: “Be aware of your surroundings. Wear wrist straps and allow adequate room around you during game play.” Clear floor space matters more in a game that asks you to swing, throw and lunge.
Online play
Online play requires a Nintendo Account and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. Availability may vary by country. Nintendo Canada’s page states: “Details about how many people can play together online will be provided in the future.” No online player count has been published yet, so any figure you see elsewhere is unconfirmed.
Storage
Nintendo Australia lists an estimated 16 GB game file size. That figure is an estimate, not a final installed size.
Rank #4
- 6 sports: Baseball, run's jump, goalkeeper, tennis, bowling & rafting.
- 20 characters to customize (change your name, outfit, accessories & hair)
- Varied game modes - Solo or multiplayer for up to 8 players.
- More than 15 environments and tons of unlockable items.
What hands-on previews report
ComicBook.com: more than half the sports
Logan Moore, writing on October 8, 2026, tried more than half the sports at a Nintendo-hosted preview (ComicBook.com hands-on preview). He liked the return of bowling, including 100-pin bowling; the boxing stamina meter and opponent ladder; and the strategy of thumb wrestling. He also valued the contrast between traditional sports and traversing the island. He noted he had not seen everything in the final game.
GamesRadar+: control ideas
GamesRadar+ responded well to the control ideas, including miming a skateboard push, holding the Joy-Con 2 like a paper plane, and angling it for thumb wrestling (GamesRadar+ hands-on preview). These are first impressions rather than a final assessment.

Nintendo Life’s roundup of final previews reports broadly positive reactions (Nintendo Life preview roundup). It also passes on a reservation from GameSpot’s previewer, who could not say how much lasting value the activities would have over time. That is the central gap in any “best multiplayer” argument.
Is it the best multiplayer game of 2026?
The claim is a judgment call. Previews support the view that the variety and new control ideas are strong. They do not show how the game compares with other 2026 multiplayer releases, because no shared criteria or head-to-head results exist yet. A fair comparison would need the same measures applied to each game:
- Local player count and controller requirements
- Variety and distinctness of events
- How easy the motion controls are for new players
- Online mode details, once Nintendo publishes the player count
- Exploration and single-player content beyond matches
- Replay value after full release, which no preview can measure
On the evidence available now, the game looks strong on variety and control design. Whether it earns the “best” label depends on the last two items, which only time with the finished game can answer.
