Nintendo Switch Sports Resort brings the series back to Wuhu Island with returning favorites and new motion-controlled activities. In a limited hands-on session, GameSpot’s Steve Watts found fun in the collection—but not enough time to tell whether it has the depth to keep players coming back.

What is Nintendo Switch Sports Resort?

GameSpot’s Steve Watts identifies Nintendo Switch Sports Resort as the fifth entry in Nintendo’s Wii Sports line and a return to Wuhu Island, now for Switch 2. His preview covered eight sports and activities, but does not establish the complete final lineup. It is a hands-on preview rather than an assessment of a finished game.

Watts’s central question is whether the collection can sustain another trip to the island, or whether “this is one vacation you can safely skip.” The session offered glimpses of how the activities play, not a reliable answer about their collective replay value. Read the GameSpot preview.

How do the new free-roaming activities play?

Three of the activities Watts tried let players roam around Wuhu Island under time limits. Their controls and goals distinguish them from the more structured returning sports.

#1 Best Overall
Mario Kart™ World (Nintendo Switch 2)
  • Race from one course to another through interconnected paths that span the world
  • Traverse mountains, forests, cities, and more—with shifting weather patterns and a day/night cycle
  • Ride on rails, jump off walls, skim across water, and more as you race for the finish line
  • Take on the adrenaline-packed Knockout Tour—a fierce 24-driver elimination mode
  • Explore courses at your own pace and wander the world to discover fun surprises in Free Roam

Skateboarding

Skateboarding combines side-on movement using Joy-Con mouse controls across a surface with motion controls for steering and tricks. That mix gives it a different feel from a conventional sports match, though the preview does not establish how much variety or challenge it offers over time.

Prop Plane

Players hold a Joy-Con like a toy airplane to explore. Of the three roaming activities, Prop Plane was the most satisfying for Watts, who particularly enjoyed flying through an obstacle course in a volcano. Nintendo’s representative told him that Prop Plane would not have a free-roam mode without timers or collectibles; that was preview information, not a confirmed final specification.

Rank #2
Star Fox™ - Nintendo Switch 2
  • Blast off on a high-octane adventure to save a star system from invasion
  • Tear through space, soar across planets, and shoot loads of foes out of the sky at every step of the way
  • A cinematic take on the Star Fox 64 story, featuring fully voiced dialogue, an epic orchestral soundtrack, and a complete visual overhaul for the Nintendo Switch 2 system
  • Enter first-person mode to experience the action from inside the cockpit, and even use mouse controls to fly
  • Invite a second player* to join you as a gunner using Nintendo Switch 2 mouse controls

Power Cruising

Power Cruising, described in the preview as jet skiing, uses horizontally held Joy-Cons like handlebars. Twisting and tilting them control throttle and steering. A Nintendo representative said the activity would also have a free-roam mode without timers or collectibles, but the preview does not confirm that this is the final design.

Do the returning sports add anything new?

The preview covers Boxing and Archery from Wii Sports Resort, along with Table Tennis and Bowling from Wii Sports. These familiar events give returning players recognizable competition, but Watts’s brief session suggests that their appeal may vary by activity.

Rank #3
Donkey Kong Bananza (Nintendo Switch 2)
  • Explore a vast underground world—by smashing your way through it!
  • A brand-new 3D platforming action adventure starring Donkey Kong and Pauline
  • Bash through just about anything in groundbreaking exploration! Crash through walls and carve tunnels—the more you smash, the more areas open up to you
  • Pair up with Pauline to use Bananza Transformations: smash through obstacles with the raw strength of Kong form, gallop with incredible speed as a Zebra, and more
  • Team up with a friend in two-player co-op as Donkey Kong and Pauline! Blast foes and terrain alike with Pauline’s voice as you explore together

Boxing and Archery

In one Boxing match against the easiest opponent, Watts found it easy to exploit the match. That is a narrow observation from a single encounter, not a judgment of the sport’s overall balance. Archery made a stronger impression: its competitive scoring structure stood out to him. The preview does not show how either activity performs across harder opponents or extended play.

Table Tennis and Bowling

Table Tennis and Bowling are among the returning sports discussed, but the preview does not provide enough detail to draw a firm conclusion about their depth or changes. Their presence adds familiar options; it does not, by itself, answer whether the overall collection will stay engaging.

Rank #4
Pokémon Pokopia - Nintendo Switch 2
  • Shape the world and build a cozy new life with Pokémon as a Ditto transformed to look like a human.
  • Use other Pokémon’s moves, like Bulbasaur’s Leafage, to revitalize and navigate the world around you.
  • Meet and befriend more Pokémon as you help nature flourish.
  • Gather materials to create items and furniture, till the fields to grow delicious crops, build homes for the Pokémon you meet, and more—there’s so much to do!
  • Experience a world with varied weather, real-time days and nights, and other surprises.

Is Thumb Wrestling more than a novelty?

Watts found Thumb Wrestling surprisingly tactical. Charging up a stronger thumb leaves a player exposed to being pinned, creating a risk-reward choice rather than a simple contest of repeated inputs. That trade-off caught his attention, but a short session could not establish the activity’s skill ceiling or staying power.

What does the preview establish—and what remains unknown?

Question What the preview shows What it does not establish
How many activities are covered? Watts tried eight sports and activities. The complete final lineup.
What is new? Skateboarding, Prop Plane and Power Cruising add free-roaming exploration and unusual Joy-Con controls. How much variety or replay value those activities provide over time.
Which events stood out? Watts singled out Archery’s competitive scoring and Thumb Wrestling’s risk-reward mechanic. Their long-term skill ceiling or appeal across a full game.
Is this a buying recommendation? The session showed moments of enjoyment alongside familiar elements. A final verdict, release date, price, purchase details or full multiplayer and platform requirements.

For now, the most defensible expectation is a mix of recognizable sports and new motion-controlled diversions, with Prop Plane providing the preview’s clearest exploratory highlight. Whether that mix amounts to lasting value is unresolved: Watts explicitly says his limited play session did not let him judge how much mileage the activities would have together. This is not a completed-game verdict, and the preview does not support a firm buy-or-skip recommendation.
