The one thing Nintendo Switch Sports Resort needs to ditch is the original game’s time-limited online Collections—and the fear of missing out they created. Nintendo has announced a change that should make customization rewards easier to earn offline, but it has not yet confirmed whether rewards in the sequel will rotate or expire.
What was wrong with the original Switch Sports’ Collections?
In its account of the original Nintendo Switch Sports, Nintendo Everything describes Collections as sets of 12 exclusive items that rotated weekly. Each set was available for three weeks before disappearing until a later rotation. It also says local games did not earn points toward those customization items, tying progress to online play. That description is the article’s account, not a Nintendo-confirmed explanation of the system’s design.

The problem was not simply that players had to unlock cosmetics. It was that access depended on playing online during a limited window. Miss a rotation and a desired item could be out of reach until it returned, putting a calendar deadline between players and customization.

Nintendo’s September 10, 2026 update says that playing any sport in any mode earns Spocco Points, which players can exchange for character customizations. Because the announcement includes any mode, it supports a meaningful improvement: offline play can contribute to customization rewards. Nintendo’s US product page also describes the game as supporting online and offline play.

Nintendo has also announced an offline Island Crown mode. The game is scheduled to launch on October 22, 2026, exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2, and Nintendo lists 12 sports. Those details establish a broader mix of ways to play; they do not establish how long individual rewards will remain available.
Does that mean the FOMO problem is fixed?
Not necessarily. Nintendo’s announcements establish that playing any sport in any mode earns points, but the cited official information does not say whether every customization item will always be available, whether Collections or other rewards will rotate, or whether items will expire. Earning progress offline and having permanent access to every reward are separate questions.

- Swing, kick, spike, and bowl your way to victory in 7 sports

- Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements
- Use the Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball in Soccer
- Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online
That distinction matters: a player may be able to earn points offline and still face limited-time items. Until Nintendo explains the reward catalogue and its availability rules, it is too early to say the sequel has removed timed-reward pressure.
What change would make the sequel fairer?
Switch Sports Resort should let players earn customization through ordinary play in any mode, then keep earned or currently offered items accessible without requiring a login during a narrow window. If Nintendo chooses to rotate featured rewards, a permanent catalogue or a way to revisit missed items would avoid turning customization into a deadline.

The announced Spocco Points system appears to address the original game’s online-only earning complaint. Whether it also removes the FOMO around limited-time Collections remains unconfirmed.
