Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is an upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 game that expands its sports collection with a larger Wuhu Island to explore. In an October 6, 2026 Engadget hands-on, Sam Rutherford reports sightseeing by plane, skateboard and power cruiser alongside familiar sports, 100-pin bowling and a new event called Thumb Wars. His preview is enthusiastic about the exploration and motion-controlled play, but he wanted more depth from the vehicle activities.
What’s new in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort?
The main change described in Engadget’s hands-on is that Wuhu Island is more than a backdrop. Rutherford reports that players can travel around the island and visit points of interest, using a plane, skateboard or power cruiser—the latter described as jetskiing. The report says exploration can take place at different times of day.

Exploring also has collectible rewards. Spocco Points can unlock cosmetic customization for a Mii, while Spocco Photos provide new starting points. The preview does not establish the full extent of the island or a complete list of activities and modes.
Which sports and activities does the preview mention?
Rutherford names bowling, archery, volleyball, golf and basketball, and also discusses tennis and boxing. The hands-on calls out 100-pin bowling and a new event, Thumb Wars. This is a preview inventory, not confirmation of the final game’s complete mode list.
#1 Best Overall
- Swing your racket, pull back and aim like an archer, and more in 12 sports with intuitive motion controls
- Move together with friends and family** in sports like Boxing, Archery, Bowling, and Basketball, battle with one thumb to hand your opponent a defeat in Thumb Wrestling, and more
- Explore the island getaway using Joy-Con 2 mouse controls in Skateboarding, steer across the waves in Power Cruising, and tilt the controller to fly around freely in Prop Plane
- Enjoy all kinds of sports on Nintendo Switch 2 as either a Sportsmate or a Mii character you create
- Nintendo Switch 2 Exclusive Games: This game is only playable on the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
The report describes gesture-based play with Joy-Con controllers. Rutherford says bowling and tennis translate well to those gestures and finds boxing engaging. He describes Thumb Wars as deceptively complex. The preview does not specify whether additional controllers or accessories are required.
What did the hands-on think of exploration and motion controls?
Rutherford’s impression is that Wuhu Island gives the collection a more substantial setting. After more than 15 minutes exploring by plane, board and jetski during his session, he felt he had only scratched the surface. He calls the sightseeing “weirdly relaxing.” That time is an anecdote from his preview session, not a measure of total game length or map size.
His main reservation is that the plane, skateboard and power-cruiser activities seemed to have room for more. He wished they offered fuller races or time trials. His overall assessment is that the game can still be fun for players of different ages when approached as a collection of mini-games.
