Which sports are included?
The current roster has eight sports. Nintendo added Golf in a free update and added Basketball in software version 1.5.0, released July 9, 2024, according to its update history.

| Volleyball | Use motion controls for serves, sets, bumps, and spikes. |
| Bowling | Swing to roll the ball; controller movement can add curve. |
| Tennis | Swing the controller like a racket; movement can add spin. |
| Badminton | Swing the controller like a racket to return the shuttlecock. |
| Chambara | Use the controller like a sword to attack and defend in platform matches. |

What equipment do you need?
For the basic game
You need a supported Nintendo Switch system and compatible Joy-Con controllers. Which controller configuration you use depends on the sport and how many people are playing, so check the planned sport and local player count before buying extra Joy-Con. Nintendo recommends TV Mode for the best experience and says Handheld Mode is not supported. Its FAQ also says Switch Pro Controllers and Switch 2 Pro Controllers are not compatible.

For Soccer with Leg-Strap controls
The Leg Strap holds a Joy-Con (L) against your leg and supports Soccer’s Leg-Strap controls, including Shoot-Out. It is not required for the other sports, and ordinary Joy-Con motion controls are available for Soccer. Nintendo says Joy-Con 2 controllers are not compatible with the Leg Strap.
Nintendo’s game product page says the physical game includes the accessory: “The physical version of the Nintendo Switch Sports game includes the Leg Strap accessory to use in Soccer.” Digital buyers can purchase the strap separately from Nintendo’s Leg Strap product page. A second strap may be useful for same-system Soccer sessions, but whether you need more controllers or straps depends on the mode and player setup.

Do you need an internet connection or Nintendo Switch Online?
Local play does not require an online membership. Online features require an internet connection, a Nintendo Account, and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, according to Nintendo’s FAQ.

Nintendo’s LAN instructions describe connecting up to four consoles, with up to two players per console. The sport determines the actual simultaneous player limit. Switch Lite may require a licensed USB LAN adapter accessory for wired LAN.
