For ordinary play, you need a compatible Nintendo Switch-family console and Joy-Con controllers—not real sports equipment. The one mode-specific accessory is the Leg Strap, which is required for Soccer Shoot-Out. Whether you need to buy one depends on your game edition and controller: the physical edition includes a strap, while Joy-Con 2 controllers do not fit it.

No real sports gear
You do not need cleats, a real ball, a racket, or other sports-specific equipment. The game uses motion controls to simulate the actions; Nintendo’s announcement describes the controls as intuitive and says no cleats are required: Nintendo Switch Sports launches April 29.

The Leg Strap is required for Soccer Shoot-Out. It can also be used for foot-based Soccer controls, but it is not required for every sport. Nintendo’s official wording is “Leg Strap accessory required for some Soccer game play.” See Nintendo Switch Sports product information.

The physical game edition includes one Leg Strap. If you own the digital edition and want to play Soccer Shoot-Out, you can buy the strap separately. Nintendo also says the Leg Strap from Ring Fit Adventure is compatible with Nintendo Switch Sports.
Set up the strap
- Place the strap at the center of either thigh.
- Insert a left Joy-Con with its control stick facing outward.
- Tighten the strap so it will not slip, but do not overtighten it.

Joy-Con 2 compatibility
Joy-Con 2 controllers are not compatible with the Leg Strap. If you want to play Soccer Shoot-Out or use the strap-based Soccer controls, you need a standard Joy-Con that fits the strap. This limitation applies to the strap; check Nintendo’s controller guidance for other play setups.

Online play requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. It is a subscription requirement rather than a piece of hardware; Nintendo lists the requirement in its product information.
