For a new Wii game on a Wii U, buy a physical Wii Game Disc. Nintendo closed new Wii U eShop purchases on March 27, 2023, so you cannot purchase a Wii title digitally from that storefront today. A Wii U can run compatible Wii software from disc through its Wii Menu, but you need Wii-era controllers and accessories. Nintendo Switch Online is a separate subscription service on Switch: it provides access to classic-game applications and their regional catalogs while your membership is active, rather than selling individual Wii games. The right choice depends first on whether the specific game is available in the current Switch Online catalog, then on your console, controller, internet and ownership requirements.

The short answer

These are not two stores offering the same library. A Wii U gives you access to compatible Wii software you already own digitally or can obtain on a physical disc. Switch Online gives a Nintendo Switch access to the classic-game applications included with your membership tier. Nintendo’s service information does not say that every Wii game is included in Switch Online, so you must check the current catalog for your country before assuming a particular title is available.

  • Want a Wii game that is not in Switch Online? Find a physical Wii Game Disc and use it in a Wii U’s Wii Menu, with the required Wii Remote, sensor bar and any title-specific accessories.
  • Want a classic game listed in Switch Online? Use a Switch with the appropriate membership tier and compatible controller. Access follows the membership terms rather than a one-time purchase of that game.
  • Already bought a Wii U eShop game? Nintendo says previously purchased software and downloadable content can still be redownloaded for the foreseeable future, but the store no longer accepts new purchases.
  • Expecting online multiplayer on Wii U? Nintendo ended Wii U software online play and other online-communication functions on April 8, 2024. A disc still works for supported local and offline play; it does not restore discontinued Nintendo network services.

Can you still buy Wii games on a Wii U?

New digital purchases are closed

The Wii U eShop stopped accepting purchases on March 27, 2023. That includes attempts to buy a new Wii title through the Wii U storefront. Do not purchase Wii U eShop credit for this purpose: the closed store cannot turn that balance into a new game. Nintendo’s discontinuation notice also described a deadline for merging eligible unused balances with a Nintendo Account; that wallet process does not reopen the shop or create a new route to Wii software.

Previously purchased downloads remain different

If the game was bought on that Wii U account before the cutoff, Nintendo says redownloads of previously purchased software and downloadable content remain available for the foreseeable future, along with software updates. Redownloading is therefore an account-recovery function, not a current digital marketplace. You need the original purchasing account and a Wii U that can reach the relevant download service. Nintendo does not promise that every service will operate forever, so keep any physical media and account details you rely on.

  • Four USB 2.0 connector slots are included. The new console is backward compatible with Wii games and Wii accessories.

The practical route for a game you never bought

For a Wii title you do not already own digitally, the practical Wii U route is a used or new physical Wii Game Disc compatible with the console. Insert the disc, open the Wii Menu and launch the game. Disc ownership is separate from Nintendo Switch Online membership and does not require a subscription merely to start a single-player game. Availability, condition and price of discs vary by region and seller; no universal current price can be stated without those details.

Can Wii U play Wii discs?

Yes. Nintendo’s Wii U Operations Manual documents Wii software compatibility through the Wii Menu. This is compatibility with Wii software, not a claim that every Wii U game, Wii accessory or online feature works in the same way. The Wii U reads the Wii Game Disc and switches to the Wii Menu environment, where the title’s original control assumptions apply.

Controller and sensor requirements

The Wii U GamePad and Wii U Pro Controller are not the normal controllers for Wii software. Nintendo’s manual says separately sold accessories are needed for Wii Menu use, and individual games can require additional hardware. In practice, plan for the following before buying a disc:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A Wii Remote; some games also require a Nunchuk, Classic Controller or another specified Wii accessory.
  • A sensor bar positioned for the Wii Remote. The Wii U console can use a compatible sensor-bar setup, but the bar is not a substitute for the controller.
  • The title’s own peripherals when listed on its packaging or manual, such as a balance board, instrument or other Wii-compatible device.
  • A television or display connected to the Wii U and the correct video and power connections.

Check the exact game’s control requirements before ordering a disc. A disc that launches successfully may still be unplayable if you lack its required accessory.

What disc compatibility does not mean

Running a Wii disc on Wii U does not convert it into a Wii U game, add modern display options or provide a digital entitlement on Switch. Save-data behavior, controls, downloadable extras and regional restrictions follow the original Wii software and console environment. Treat the Wii Menu as a compatibility layer, not as a remastered edition.

What Nintendo Switch Online actually provides

Membership access to classic applications

Nintendo Switch Online is a recurring membership service. It provides access to classic-game applications and the catalogs assigned to your tier while the membership is active; it is not a one-time purchase of each classic game. Nintendo’s UK FAQ describes a standard tier and an Expansion Pack tier. The Expansion Pack adds Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance and Mega Drive libraries to the classic offerings available in the service.

Catalogs and terms are country-specific and can change. Nintendo describes the catalog as growing but does not provide a fixed release schedule in the cited FAQ. Check the current listing in your local Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Switch Online application before naming a game, relying on a release date or assuming that a Wii title is included.

Wii is not automatically part of the service

A Switch Online membership does not grant access to the complete Wii library. The service documentation identifies its classic applications and tiers, but it does not establish that every Wii game is present. If your target is a specific Wii release, verify that exact title and version in the current catalog. If it is absent, Switch Online cannot replace a Wii Game Disc on a Wii U.

Offline launching has a seven-day condition

Nintendo says the NES, SNES, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance and Mega Drive applications can be played for up to seven days without an internet connection. After that period, the console may need to reconnect online before the application will launch again. This is limited offline use, not permanent offline ownership. A Switch used somewhere without periodic internet access should therefore be treated differently from a physical disc in a Wii U.

Side-by-side comparison

Question Physical Wii disc on Wii U Nintendo Switch Online classic app
How you obtain the game Buy or borrow a compatible Wii Game Disc; previously purchased Wii U eShop content can be redownloaded. Use the classic application and catalog included with an active membership tier.
Can you buy a new Wii U eShop copy? No. New purchases ended March 27, 2023. Not applicable; this is membership access, not a Wii U eShop purchase.
Library fit Depends on whether the physical disc exists and is compatible with your Wii U region and hardware. Depends on the current, region-specific catalog; Nintendo does not state that every Wii game is included.
Payment model Individual disc purchase; price depends on seller, condition and region. Recurring membership; current price and terms depend on country and tier.
Console Wii U, using the Wii Menu. Nintendo Switch.
Controllers Wii Remote and sensor bar, plus any accessory required by the game. Switch-compatible controller setup supported by the application.
Internet requirement Single-player disc use can be offline, but Wii U online communication services ended April 8, 2024. Classic applications support up to seven days offline before an online relaunch check may be required.
What happens after payment or membership ends The disc remains your physical copy, subject to working hardware, disc condition and compatibility. Access is governed by the active membership; do not assume continued access after expiration.
Updates and redownloads Previously purchased Wii U eShop content remains redownloadable for the foreseeable future, according to Nintendo. Application and catalog availability follows Nintendo’s current service terms.

Choosing the right route for a specific game

Step 1: Identify the original platform

Confirm whether the title is a Wii game, a Wii U game or an earlier system’s release. “Wii games on a Wii U” commonly refers to Wii Game Discs, but the Wii U also had its own software. A Wii U disc and a Wii disc are not interchangeable categories, and a Switch Online listing may represent a separate classic release rather than the original Wii version.

Step 2: Check the current Switch catalog in your region

On Switch, open the Nintendo Switch Online application or your local Nintendo eShop and search for the exact game. Check which tier is required, whether the listing is available in your country and whether the application supports the controller features you need. Do not rely on an old list, a different country’s catalog or a video showing a prior service lineup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 3: If it is not listed, verify the disc and accessories

For a Wii title absent from Switch Online, look for a compatible Wii Game Disc. Confirm the disc’s region, language and condition, then check the game’s packaging or manual for Wii Remote, Nunchuk, Classic Controller, balance-board or instrument requirements. Make sure your Wii U has a working sensor bar and at least one compatible Wii Remote before spending money on the disc.

Step 4: Decide whether recurring access suits your use

Switch Online can be convenient when you want several included classics through one active membership and can reconnect the console periodically. A disc makes sense when you want one particular Wii release, do not want access tied to a subscription or need offline single-player play without a seven-day application check. Neither choice guarantees indefinite hardware support: a disc can fail or a console can need repair, while a subscription catalog can change.

What happens when Switch Online expires?

Switch Online access is controlled by the membership terms. When the membership is inactive, you should not treat the classic applications as permanently purchased copies. The practical consequence is that the service model differs from inserting a disc: the disc is a physical item you retain, whereas the classic catalog is available while your account has the required membership. Nintendo’s terms and local storefront notices govern any grace periods, renewals or account-specific behavior, so check them before allowing a membership to lapse during a trip or long offline period.

What happens to Wii U online play?

Nintendo ended online play and other functions using online communication for Wii U software on April 8, 2024. This shutdown is separate from the eShop purchase cutoff and from redownloading previously purchased content. A Wii Game Disc can still be useful for supported offline or local modes, but it cannot restore Nintendo’s discontinued online matchmaking, online rankings or other network communication features. Avoid buying a disc on the assumption that its original online mode will work.

Setup: playing a Wii disc on Wii U

  1. Check the disc and hardware. Confirm the disc is a Wii Game Disc compatible with your console’s region. Gather a Wii Remote, sensor bar and any accessories named by the game’s packaging or manual.
  2. Connect the sensor bar and power on. Place the bar where the Wii Remote can see it, connect the Wii U to your display and turn on the console.
  3. Open the Wii Menu. From the Wii U system interface, select the Wii Menu. Wii software runs in this environment rather than as a native Wii U application.
  4. Insert the disc. Insert the Wii Game Disc and select its disc channel when it appears. Follow the game’s on-screen controller prompts.
  5. Test required accessories. If the title requests a Nunchuk, Classic Controller or other device, connect it before starting a session. A missing accessory can prevent the game from accepting input even when the disc itself is readable.
  6. Plan for offline and online limits. Play supported local or single-player modes normally, but do not expect Wii U online communication services to function after the April 8, 2024 shutdown.

Setup: using a Switch Online classic application

  1. Confirm the account and tier. Sign in with the Nintendo Account that has the required Nintendo Switch Online membership. Expansion Pack is the tier that adds Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance and Mega Drive libraries to the standard classic offerings described by Nintendo.
  2. Install the relevant application. Open the Nintendo Switch Online section of the Switch eShop, locate the classic application for the system you want and install it under the account with membership access.
  3. Check the local catalog. Launch the application and verify that the exact game is listed in your country. Catalogs can differ by region and change over time.
  4. Pair a supported controller. Use the Switch controller arrangement supported by that application. Some games are designed around controls that differ from Wii Remote motion input, so do not assume a classic-app version reproduces every Wii control feature.
  5. Reconnect periodically. Nintendo says the covered classic applications can run offline for up to seven days; reconnect before that limit if the console may be offline for an extended period.

Common mistakes and fixes

“I bought eShop credit, so why can’t I buy the game?”

The Wii U eShop purchase service ended March 27, 2023. Credit cannot reopen it. Use a previously purchased account download if available, or obtain a physical Wii Game Disc.

“The disc loads, but the Wii U controller does nothing.”

Wii software generally requires Wii-era input. Pair a Wii Remote, make sure the sensor bar is connected and add the title-specific accessory. The Wii U GamePad and Wii U Pro Controller are not substitutes for every Wii control scheme.

“The game is shown in an online list, but I cannot find it.”

Check the country and membership tier. Nintendo’s catalogs are regional and may change; an old article or another country’s list is not proof of current availability.

“I can play offline today, but the Switch app will not start later.”

Reconnect the Switch to the internet. Nintendo’s documented offline window for the listed classic applications is up to seven days, after which an online check may be needed to launch.

“My Wii disc’s online mode no longer works.”

This is expected for Wii U software that depended on Nintendo’s online communication services, which ended April 8, 2024. Test local multiplayer or single-player modes instead; a physical copy cannot bring back the closed network service.

Decision checklist

  • Choose the Wii U disc route when the exact Wii game is unavailable in Switch Online, you want a physical copy, you need a particular Wii control scheme or you prefer access that is not tied to an active subscription.
  • Choose Switch Online when the exact classic game is currently listed in your region, you already own a Switch and compatible controller and you value access to several included systems through one membership.
  • Choose redownload only when you previously purchased the title on your Wii U account. It is not a method for buying a new game.
  • Choose neither until you verify hardware and accessories if the game requires motion controls, a Nunchuk, Classic Controller, balance board or another peripheral.
  • Do not count on Wii U online play; those services ended in 2024 regardless of whether the game is on disc.

Questions readers often ask

Do I need Nintendo Switch Online to play Wii games on Wii U?

No. A Wii Game Disc runs through the Wii Menu on a Wii U and does not require a Switch Online membership. You still need the Wii Remote, sensor bar and any accessories required by the title.

Can I transfer a Wii U eShop game to Switch?

The cited Nintendo notices describe redownloading prior Wii U purchases, not converting them into Switch licenses. A Wii U purchase should not be assumed to grant access to a Switch Online classic application.

Is a physical Wii disc a permanent guarantee?

It is a physical copy you retain, but use still depends on a functioning Wii U, readable disc and compatible accessories. Hardware failure, disc damage or regional incompatibility can prevent play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Expansion Pack include every Nintendo classic?

No. It adds specified classic libraries, including Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance and Mega Drive, to the standard offerings. The current catalog is selective and region-specific; verify each game.

Can I use a Wii U GamePad for all Wii games?

No. Nintendo’s Wii U manual identifies separately sold Wii accessories for Wii Menu software, and individual games can require additional hardware. Use the controller configuration specified for the title.
