For most people who want convenient access to many classic games, Nintendo Switch Online is the easier and usually cheaper starting point. In the United States, the individual plan costs $19.99 per year, while Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack costs $49.99 per year. You get curated NES, Super NES and Game Boy libraries with the base plan; the Expansion Pack adds Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy and, on Nintendo Switch 2, GameCube.
The compromise is ownership. Nintendo Switch Online provides access only while the required membership remains active, and an offline console must reconnect for a membership check every seven days. Buying an original NES, Super NES, Nintendo 64 or Game Boy gives you physical hardware and cartridges that are yours to keep, resell and use without a subscription, but finding authentic working equipment, connecting it to a modern television and maintaining aging electronics takes more money and effort.

The short answer
| What matters most | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fast, simple access to many games | Nintendo Switch Online | One modern console, HDMI output, suspend points, rewind and supported online play. |
| Owning physical games | Original Nintendo hardware | Console and cartridges remain usable without an active Nintendo Account membership. |
| Lowest predictable annual cost | Base Nintendo Switch Online | $19.99 per year for an individual US membership; the library is limited to NES, Super NES and Game Boy. |
| Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance or GameCube access | Expansion Pack | $49.99 per year for an individual US membership; GameCube is available only on Nintendo Switch 2. |
| Original controller feel and display behavior | Original hardware | The experience depends on the exact console revision, cables, television and cartridge condition. |
| Online multiplayer for supported classics | Nintendo Switch Online | Supported titles can add online play without third-party networking equipment. |
There is no universal winner. Choose the subscription when convenience, breadth and modern features matter more than permanent ownership. Choose original hardware when collecting, physical media, authentic controls and independence from Nintendo’s service are the priority.
What Nintendo Switch Online actually includes
Plans and US pricing
Nintendo’s current US pricing page lists these annual rates:
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
| Plan | Individual, one year | Family, one year |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch Online | $19.99 | $34.99 |
| Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack | $49.99 | $79.99 |
Family plans cover the number of Nintendo Accounts allowed by Nintendo’s current terms, rather than turning one account into several independent purchases. Check the account and region requirements before joining. The figures above are US prices and can change.
Libraries by membership tier
- Base membership: Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Game Boy Nintendo Classics libraries.
- Expansion Pack: everything in the base tier plus Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance and Virtual Boy.
- Nintendo Switch 2: GameCube Nintendo Classics are an Expansion Pack benefit on that hardware. They are not presented as a GameCube library for the original Nintendo Switch.
Nintendo continues to add to the libraries, so a static game count would become outdated. More importantly, the catalog is curated: a system’s entire original release library is not automatically included. Check the exact games you care about before subscribing.
Access is a subscription license, not a purchase
Nintendo says members can play the included games as often as they like for as long as the required subscription is active. If the membership ends, the classic games cannot be accessed until the membership is renewed. You do not receive an individually owned digital copy that remains playable after cancellation.

That makes the membership the current official route for these versions, rather than a storefront where you buy each title permanently.
Offline play and the seven-day check
Classic games can run without an internet connection, but the console must connect online to verify the membership every seven days. This is different from permanent ownership: a long trip or a console kept offline indefinitely can eventually be interrupted by the verification requirement. Connect the console before leaving for an extended period and make sure the correct Nintendo Account is linked.
Modern conveniences
Nintendo’s catalog information lists suspend points, rewind and online play for supported titles. Suspend points let you preserve a game state without reaching an in-game save location. Rewind can undo a recent mistake in compatible games. Online play can let people in different locations play supported multiplayer titles together. Cloud saves are another Switch service convenience for compatible save data, but they do not turn the classic software into an owned purchase and should not be treated as a replacement for every game’s own save behavior.

What buying original Nintendo hardware changes
You own the physical platform and cartridges
An original NES, Super NES or Nintendo 64 is a physical console, and a Game Boy is a physical handheld. Authentic cartridges are physical items you can collect, resell or lend. They do not require an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, a Nintendo Account or a seven-day online check. That independence is the strongest reason to buy original equipment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Ownership does not mean zero maintenance. A cartridge may need cleaning, a cartridge connector may have weak contact, a power supply may fail and a controller may have worn buttons. Older capacitors and other components can age. Replacement parts, adapters and professional repair add cost and require time. Nintendo’s current repair policies should be checked for the specific model; there is no single repair promise that covers every original Nintendo system.
Original does not mean identical for every setup
Picture quality, sound, controller response, loading behavior and television compatibility vary with the console revision, cable type, display and cartridge condition. A stock console connected through its original analog output can look and feel different from a later revision, a repaired unit or a setup using a modern conversion device. Some buyers want that original character; others prefer the cleaner and simpler HDMI experience of a Switch.
Modern televisions may lack the analog inputs used by older consoles. You may need a compatible adapter or upscaling device, and inexpensive converters can introduce lag or poor image quality. Treat the display chain as part of the hardware budget rather than assuming the console alone is the complete setup.
Cost: compare the subscription with a complete hardware setup
Predictable subscription totals
Using Nintendo’s current US individual prices, three years of the base plan totals $59.97 and three years of the Expansion Pack totals $149.97, before taxes or any price changes. Five years would total $99.95 for the base plan or $249.95 for the Expansion Pack at those unchanged annual rates. These are access costs, not ownership costs: canceling after that period ends access to the classic games.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The annual totals are $34.99 for the base family plan and $79.99 for the Expansion Pack family plan. Account eligibility, region and Nintendo’s current family-group rules apply.

- The battery life will depend on the games you play. For instance, the battery will last approximately 5.5 hours for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (games sold separately)

Hardware costs are market-dependent
There is no reliable single price for an original NES, Super NES, Nintendo 64 or Game Boy. Used prices change by region, condition, console revision, included controllers, cables, cartridge rarity and seller reputation. A working console may need a replacement power supply, a controller, an HDMI solution, cleaning or repair. Rare games can cost more than the console itself, while common cartridges may be inexpensive.
To compare honestly, add the complete first-year hardware budget:
- Working console or handheld.
- At least one tested controller and a compatible power supply.
- Video cable or a suitable modern-display adapter.
- The specific cartridges you want, including shipping and any authenticity testing.
- Cleaning, repair or replacement parts that the condition of the unit requires.
Then compare that one-time total with the number of subscription years you expect to use. Do not assume an original console is automatically cheaper; the result depends on the system and games.

Game coverage: start with the titles, not the system name
The phrase “NES games” or “SNES games” can hide a major difference between the two choices. Nintendo Switch Online includes a selected catalog, not every cartridge ever released. A game may be absent, arrive later, differ by region or be available only in an Expansion Pack tier. A collector who wants a particular obscure release should verify that title specifically.
Original hardware offers the broadest access to cartridges made for that system, provided you can find authentic copies and the console supports the relevant region. It also lets you experience games that never enter Nintendo’s subscription catalog. The tradeoff is that availability and price are controlled by the used market rather than one annual fee.
Convenience, controls and display behavior
Why Switch is easier day to day
- One modern console handles several generations of Nintendo Classics.
- HDMI output avoids many analog-to-digital connection problems.
- Suspend points reduce the need to reach a game’s built-in save location.
- Rewind can help with difficult sections in supported games.
- Supported multiplayer can work online.
- Portable play is available on compatible Switch hardware.
Nintendo also sells official Nintendo Switch NES Controllers. Nintendo describes the wireless controllers as designed to look and operate like the original NES controller, intended for NES Nintendo Classics games. In the United States and Canada, the two-pack is listed at $59.99 for eligible paid members; price, stock and membership eligibility can change. These controllers improve the physical feel without requiring an original NES, but they remain accessories for the subscription-based software.

- 6.2” LCD screen.
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer

Why original hardware still feels different
An original controller is connected to the original console and behaves as that hardware’s electrical design intended. The timing, button shape, cable length, video processing and audio path all contribute to the experience. A Switch controller can reproduce much of the layout, but it cannot make a modern HDMI pipeline identical to every original television and console combination.
Conversely, original hardware can be less forgiving. A worn connector may require reseating a cartridge, a television may not accept the signal, and a damaged controller cable can interrupt play. Decide whether authenticity or low-friction use is more important before spending on accessories.
Multiplayer and social play
Nintendo Switch Online can add online play to supported classic games, allowing people in different locations to play together through the service. This is a meaningful advantage when your group is not in the same room.
Original consoles are generally designed for local play. You can gather around one television and use the appropriate controllers, but online play normally requires third-party networking equipment or a separate modern implementation. That additional equipment can undermine the simplicity of an original setup.
Longevity and access risk
Subscription risk
Your access depends on an active membership and Nintendo’s continued operation of the service. The seven-day check also matters if a console stays offline. If Nintendo changes a catalog, a title’s availability can change even though the membership itself remains active. The benefit is that you do not have to repair the underlying game hardware.

Your cartridge remains yours even if a subscription ends, but the console can fail and replacement parts may become harder to find. Physical media can also be counterfeit, damaged or affected by battery failure in cartridges that use one for saves. Owning the game removes subscription dependence, not the need to care for aging electronics and media.
Best Value
- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
How to avoid counterfeit NES and other Nintendo cartridges
Nintendo warns that counterfeit hardware and cartridges are sold online. Its buyer guidance recommends checking the Official Nintendo Seal of Quality, packaging, manuals, region and language. Those checks are useful, but they should be part of a broader purchase process.
- Choose a seller with a clear return policy. A return window matters if a cartridge fails testing or turns out to be counterfeit.
- Request detailed photographs. Ask for the front and back of the cartridge, label, shell, contacts, board if available, serial markings and included packaging.
- Compare the item with known authentic examples. Look for correct fonts, label alignment, screw type, molded shell details and board layout. A seal printed on a box alone is not proof.
- Confirm region and language. A cartridge from another region may have different packaging, compatibility or language, and a seller should state that clearly.
- Ask whether the cartridge was tested. “Untested” is a condition description, not evidence that the game works.
- Inspect on arrival. Photograph the package, compare the item with the listing and test it promptly so the return period is still open.
For a console, ask about video output, controller ports, power supply, cartridge loading, previous repairs and whether the serial number matches the listing. A specialist retro retailer or repair shop may cost more than an anonymous marketplace listing but can reduce authenticity and condition risk.
Which path fits your priorities?
Choose Nintendo Switch Online when:
- You want several classic systems on one modern console.
- You value suspend points, rewind, portable play or supported online multiplayer.
- You do not need to own a cartridge collection.
- The exact games you want are in the current catalog.
- You accept annual payments and the seven-day offline verification requirement.
Choose original hardware when:
- You want cartridges and a console that remain yours after any subscription ends.
- You collect physical games or need releases outside Nintendo’s curated libraries.
- Original controller response and audiovisual behavior are central to the experience.
- You are comfortable checking authenticity, sourcing cables and maintaining older electronics.
- You primarily play local multiplayer and already have a compatible television setup.
Use both when your priorities are mixed
A hybrid setup can be rational: use Nintendo Switch Online for convenient access, portable play and online sessions, then buy original hardware only for the systems, cartridges or controller experience you care about most. Start by listing five or ten must-play games. Subscribe if most are in the catalog; buy hardware when several are absent, unusually expensive through the service’s alternatives or important as physical collectibles.

- Make a must-play list. Write the exact titles, not just “NES” or “N64.”
- Check the current catalog and tier. Confirm whether each title is included, requires the Expansion Pack or is not listed.
- Choose your ownership requirement. If losing access after cancellation is unacceptable, plan for original cartridges.
- Calculate the complete cost. For Switch, include the annual plan and any controller. For original hardware, include console, controllers, cables, display conversion, games and likely maintenance.
- Assess your play environment. Decide whether you need portable or online play, or whether local play on an original television setup is the goal.
- Check authenticity and condition. Apply Nintendo’s seal, packaging, region and language checks, then verify seller photos, testing and returns.
- Buy the least irreversible option first. A one-year subscription lets you test the catalog; a purchase of rare hardware or cartridges is harder to unwind if the setup does not suit you.
Setting up Nintendo Switch Online for retro games
- Purchase the appropriate Nintendo Switch Online membership for your Nintendo Account.
- Open the Nintendo Classics application for the system you want to play and download it from the Nintendo eShop if it is not already installed.
- Sign in with the account that holds the active membership.
- Connect the console to the internet before a long offline period so the seven-day membership check can complete.
- Use suspend points, rewind and supported online features from the game’s available menu options.
- Before ending the membership, understand that access to the classic games will stop until the membership is renewed.
Setting up an original console safely
- Identify the exact model and region before buying games or cables.
- Confirm that the console includes a compatible power supply and that the seller describes its tested condition.
- Plan the television connection. Verify whether your display accepts the console’s output or budget for a quality conversion solution.
- Buy one known-authentic, tested cartridge first rather than an expensive collection of unverified games.
- Clean contacts only with methods appropriate to the hardware; avoid forcing cartridges or using liquids that can damage labels and boards.
- Test every controller port, button, cartridge and video output during the return period.
- Keep receipts, listing photographs and serial information for future repairs or resale.
Bottom line
Nintendo Switch Online is the better value in convenience: $19.99 per year for the US individual base plan gives access to NES, Super NES and Game Boy libraries, while $49.99 per year adds several more systems and GameCube on Nintendo Switch 2. You gain modern features and supported online play, but the games remain accessible only while the membership is active and the console passes Nintendo’s seven-day offline check.
Original Nintendo hardware is the better value in ownership and authenticity. A cartridge collection can outlast a subscription, but the total cost includes variable used-market prices, authenticity checks, cables, display compatibility, repairs and maintenance. If you want a simple way to play many known titles, start with Nintendo Switch Online. If you want to collect, preserve and physically own specific games, buy carefully tested original hardware and cartridges.
