Which membership tier unlocks profile icon rewards?
Nintendo’s icon instructions say users with an active Nintendo Switch Online membership can redeem My Nintendo Platinum Points for icon elements. That means a standard paid membership works for the general selection; the icon feature itself is not exclusive to Expansion Pack.

Nintendo distinguishes ordinary elements from Expansion Pack-exclusive ones. If you want a specific exclusive character, background, or frame, you need the higher tier to access that subset. For other available elements, standard membership is sufficient. Nintendo’s plan comparison describes the tier differences and Expansion Pack’s added content.

Icon rewards use My Nintendo Platinum Points. Complete missions shown on your console, collect the points, and redeem them for available characters, backgrounds, and frames. You then combine the elements into a custom profile icon in the Nintendo Switch Online app on the system.

- On a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 with internet access, open the Nintendo Switch Online icon from the HOME Menu.
- Select Missions & Rewards and check the available missions, point costs, and icon elements.
- Complete a mission and collect the Platinum Points. Some missions have a deadline for collecting earned points, so check the mission details.
- Redeem points for the elements you want, then combine the available pieces into a profile icon.
Nintendo’s eligibility requirement is an active, paid membership; a free trial does not qualify for this feature. Missions and rewards rotate, so a particular item may not be available whenever you look. In an article dated June 5, 2025, Nintendo described monthly themes and weekly refreshes, including featured classic-game icons and chances to obtain previously released elements. Treat that as Nintendo’s stated rotation format, not a guarantee that any particular reward is currently offered. Check Nintendo’s news updates and the console’s Missions & Rewards screen for current availability.
Which plan makes sense for your account?
Choose based on the icon elements you want, how many Nintendo Accounts need membership, and whether you will use the Expansion Pack’s other benefits. Nintendo says an Individual plan applies to one Nintendo Account; a Family plan covers up to eight people in the Nintendo Account family group.

Do not pay extra for Expansion Pack solely on the assumption that all profile icons require it. The higher price buys its added content and access to the exclusive icon subset; standard membership covers ordinary icon rewards.
