The standard tier covers the essentials; Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack costs more but adds larger retro libraries, selected downloadable content and Switch 2-specific features. The right choice depends on how many Nintendo Accounts need coverage, which games you play and whether the added catalog justifies the higher annual fee.
What Nintendo Switch Online actually provides
Nintendo Switch Online is attached to a Nintendo Account, not permanently to one console. While the membership is active, that account can use the service’s benefits in compatible games and apps. Availability, supported games and features vary by country and by platform, so a feature listed for Switch 2 should not be assumed to work on the original Nintendo Switch.

The service has two tiers: standard Nintendo Switch Online and Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Each tier can be purchased for one account or for a Nintendo Account family group containing up to eight accounts.

| Plan | Coverage | Term and U.S. price |
|---|---|---|
| Standard individual | One Nintendo Account | 1 month: $3.99; 3 months: $7.99; 12 months: $19.99 |
| Standard family | Up to eight accounts in one family group | 12 months: $34.99 |
| Expansion Pack individual | One Nintendo Account | 12 months: $49.99 |
| Expansion Pack family | Up to eight accounts in one family group | 12 months: $79.99 |
The monthly and three-month options are listed for the standard individual membership only in Nintendo’s U.S. support pricing table. The published annual prices are not lifetime purchases: they pay for a defined period of access and normally renew unless automatic renewal is disabled.
How the family discount works
Eight separate standard annual individual memberships would cost $159.92 in total ($19.99 multiplied by eight), compared with $34.99 for one standard family membership. Eight separate annual Expansion Pack memberships would total $399.92, compared with $79.99 for the family tier. Those are arithmetic comparisons using Nintendo’s listed U.S. prices, not a separate Nintendo statistic.
Dividing the family prices by eight gives about $4.37 per account for standard and about $10 per account for Expansion Pack. The calculation assumes all eight places are used for the full year and that the group remains coordinated; an under-filled family group has a higher effective cost per person.

Online play in compatible games
Standard membership enables online multiplayer and other network features in games that support them. It does not make every game online, remove a game’s own requirements or guarantee that every mode is available. Check the individual game’s online-support information, especially for free-to-play titles that may use different access rules.
NES, Super NES and Game Boy collections
Subscribers receive access to Nintendo’s curated libraries of classic NES, Super NES and Game Boy games. The catalog is a service benefit rather than a transfer of ownership: access is tied to an active membership and to the games Nintendo makes available in your region.
Save Data Cloud
Save Data Cloud backs up saves for compatible games, which can help when moving to another console or recovering from a hardware problem. Compatibility is determined game by game, so a title should not be assumed to support cloud backup merely because it runs on Nintendo Switch. Cloud storage is also not a substitute for checking a game’s own save-transfer or synchronization rules.

Nintendo Music, offers and mobile-app features
Nintendo lists Nintendo Music access on a smart device and special offers among the standard benefits. Some app features, including voice chat, require a compatible smartphone and a Nintendo Account holder aged 13 or older. The mobile app and its communication tools are therefore separate requirements from simply owning a Switch console.
GameChat on Switch 2
Nintendo lists GameChat for Switch 2. Because it is identified as a Switch 2 feature, owners of the original Nintendo Switch should not buy a subscription expecting access to it on that hardware.
What Expansion Pack adds
Expansion Pack includes every standard benefit and adds larger classic-game access plus selected game content. It is a subscription tier, not a purchase of all the underlying games or downloadable content.
| Benefit | Standard | Expansion Pack |
|---|---|---|
| Compatible online play | Included | Included |
| NES, Super NES and Game Boy classics | Included | Included |
| Nintendo 64 classics | Not included | Included |
| Game Boy Advance classics | Not included | Included |
| SEGA Genesis classics | Not included | Included |
| GameCube classics | Not included | Included on Switch 2 |
| Select downloadable content | Not included | Included while eligible membership is active |
| Select Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade packs | Not included | Included while eligible membership is active |
| GameChat | Not included | Included on Switch 2 |
Additional classic libraries
Expansion Pack adds Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance and SEGA Genesis collections. Nintendo also lists GameCube Classics for Switch 2. These catalogs are platform- and region-dependent, and the games available can change as Nintendo adds or removes titles.
Included DLC and Switch 2 upgrade packs
Selected downloadable content is available at no additional charge to an eligible Expansion Pack member. You must own the associated base game to use its DLC. Likewise, an included Switch 2 upgrade pack does not replace the game itself: you need a physical or digital copy of that game to download and use the upgrade pack.
Because the benefit is linked to the active subscription, it should be treated as access during the membership period. If the membership ends, access to subscription-provided DLC or upgrade content can be lost unless you obtain that content separately under Nintendo’s terms.

The optional GameCube controller
Nintendo offers a GameCube controller for purchase by Nintendo Switch Online members. Nintendo states that this optional controller is compatible only with Nintendo Switch 2. It is not required for Expansion Pack, GameCube Classics or Nintendo Switch Online generally; it is an accessory for players who want that control style and whose hardware supports it.
Individual versus family membership
What a family membership covers
A family membership grants service access to every Nintendo Account in the purchaser’s Nintendo Account family group, up to eight users total. The covered accounts can use one console or multiple consoles; they do not have to live on the same machine.
Having several profiles on one Switch does not automatically provide coverage. Each Nintendo Account that needs the service must be added to the family group. Nintendo says the purchaser must be at least 18, but does not have to be the family-group administrator.
Adding people to the family group
- The family-group administrator signs in to the Nintendo Account website.
- Open Family group.
- Choose Add a member, then Invite someone to your family group.
- Enter the invitee’s Nintendo Account email address and send the invitation.
- The invited person accepts the invitation from their Nintendo Account. Coverage begins once the account is part of the group and the membership is active.
Only invite accounts you trust. The family group is an account-management relationship, not merely a way to split a payment, and Nintendo controls who can administer or change the group.
When an individual plan is simpler
- Choose an individual plan when only one Nintendo Account needs online play or the classic libraries.
- Use the one-month or three-month standard terms when you need short-term access and do not want to commit to a full year.
- Choose an individual Expansion Pack when one player specifically wants its extra libraries or included content and no reliable family group exists.
When the family plan wins
A family plan is normally the lower-cost structure when several people will use the service for the same 12-month period. The key condition is that every user must belong to the purchaser’s family group. Buying a family plan and leaving most places unused reduces the savings, while coordinating a group of eight produces the lowest per-account arithmetic cost.
How to decide between standard and Expansion Pack
Make the decision in this order:
- Count Nintendo Accounts. Decide whether one account or several accounts need coverage, and whether those people can remain in one family group.
- List the games and features you actually need. Standard online play, NES, Super NES, Game Boy access and cloud saves may be enough. Expansion Pack matters if you want Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, SEGA Genesis or Switch 2 GameCube Classics, or if a selected DLC or upgrade pack has real value to you.
- Check the hardware. GameCube Classics and GameChat in Nintendo’s listed benefits are Switch 2-only. A subscription cannot add those features to an original Switch.
- Compare the premium. In the United States, Expansion Pack costs $30 more per year for an individual ($49.99 versus $19.99) and $45 more for a family group ($79.99 versus $34.99). Choose it when the added catalog or eligible content is worth that difference over the period you intend to subscribe.
- Check compatibility. Confirm that the games you care about support online play, cloud saves or the relevant DLC. “Included” does not mean every game, every region or every platform.
Free trial, automatic renewal and cancellation
How the seven-day trial works
Nintendo advertises a seven-day free trial for standard Nintendo Switch Online. Unless automatic renewal is turned off before the trial ends, it converts to a one-month membership that renews automatically. The trial cannot be redeemed as an Expansion Pack trial, and an account with an active individual or family membership is not eligible.

Turning off automatic renewal
Nintendo says automatic renewal can be disabled from Your Subscriptions in Nintendo eShop or in Nintendo Account settings. The exact screen wording can change, so verify the current account interface. Nintendo’s overview warns that after automatic renewal is turned off, it cannot be turned on again for that same renewal setting; you can still purchase another membership when the current term ends.
- Sign in to the Nintendo Account that owns the membership.
- Open Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Account settings and select Your Subscriptions.
- Select the Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Choose the control for automatic renewal and confirm that it is turned off.
- Check the displayed expiration date. You retain service access through the paid period unless Nintendo’s on-screen terms say otherwise.
Disabling renewal is not the same as deleting the Nintendo Account. It prevents another charge at the next renewal date; it does not erase games, saves or the account itself.
Changing from standard to Expansion Pack
Nintendo allows eligible upgrades through subscription settings. A standard individual membership can move to an Expansion Pack individual membership, and a standard family membership can move to an Expansion Pack family membership. Nintendo’s support information describes a price adjustment based on the remaining days in eligible memberships, although restrictions can apply and the exact amount is shown during the transaction.
An individual account covered by someone else’s family membership cannot independently upgrade that family coverage. The family subscription itself must be changed by the person who controls it. Nintendo’s support FAQ also says an active Expansion Pack membership cannot be changed down to standard. Once the Expansion Pack term ends, you can choose a standard plan instead.
Common mistakes and practical checks
- Confusing console profiles with Nintendo Accounts: family coverage follows accounts in the family group, not every profile automatically present on a console.
- Assuming all DLC is included: Expansion Pack covers selected DLC, and you still need the corresponding base game.
- Assuming upgrade packs include the game: you need a physical or digital copy of the game before downloading an included Switch 2 upgrade pack.
- Expecting cloud saves everywhere: Save Data Cloud applies only to compatible games.
- Expecting the mobile app to work alone: some app functions require a compatible smartphone and an account holder aged 13 or older.
- Forgetting renewal: memberships renew at the then-current price unless automatic renewal is disabled.
- Using the wrong hardware: GameCube Classics, GameChat and the listed GameCube controller compatibility are tied to Switch 2.
- Comparing prices across countries: the figures in this article are U.S. prices; Nintendo’s price and availability vary by country.
Bottom-line choice
For one player who mainly wants online multiplayer and the NES, Super NES and Game Boy catalogs, standard annual membership is the baseline value, with monthly and three-month terms available in the United States. For several accounts, the standard family plan is the economical option when everyone can join one family group. Expansion Pack is justified by specific extras—Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, SEGA Genesis or Switch 2 GameCube libraries, selected DLC, upgrade packs and Switch 2 features—not by online play alone. Check the games, hardware and renewal setting before paying, then choose the least expensive tier that covers the features your household will actually use.
