Accessing the games
- On your Switch or Switch 2, open the Nintendo Switch Online area or Nintendo eShop and download the Nintendo Classics library.
- Return to the console’s HOME Menu and launch the Genesis library app.
- Choose a listed game to play. Nintendo’s Nintendo Classics access instructions cover both consoles and require internet access for setup and the appropriate membership.
Offline play and membership checks
After downloading the library, you can play offline, but the console must connect to the internet at least once every seven days so Nintendo can verify the active membership. If the membership expires or lapses, access to the games ends; save data remains on the console. Nintendo says its classic-game libraries will continue to grow, so the catalog may change.
Features and Switch 2 support
Nintendo lists rewind, save-state support and online play for the Genesis collection. Online play depends on the multiplayer features of each original game, so it does not mean every title offers multiplayer. In supported one- or two-player modes, players can play together; some single-player games support taking turns. Nintendo describes the Genesis software as supported on Switch 2 with behavior consistent with Switch. See Nintendo’s Nintendo Classics overview and FAQ for membership and play details.

Is a Genesis-style controller required?
No. The collection can be played without Nintendo’s optional SEGA Genesis Control Pad. Nintendo designed the wireless pad for the Genesis library, but says compatibility with other games is not guaranteed. Its controller overview and FAQ provides current regional availability and pricing details; those can change. The catalog page does not establish Amazon availability.
