For most US players, Nintendo Switch Online Standard is the better value if you mainly need online multiplayer, cloud saves, and the NES, SNES, and Game Boy libraries. Expansion Pack costs $30 more per year for one account or $45 more for a family plan. That premium is worthwhile when you will regularly use its Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, SEGA Genesis, Virtual Boy, or eligible Switch 2 libraries, or its included DLC and upgrade packs.
The right choice depends on actual use, not the tier name. Count the people who will use the membership, identify the specific games and add-ons you want, and confirm which console they require. The prices below are current US annual prices in US dollars; Nintendo says pricing depends on the country where the membership is used.

Quick verdict: Standard for core online play, Expansion Pack for specific extras
Standard covers the basic Nintendo Switch Online service. It is the sensible choice for a single player who wants compatible games online, Save Data Cloud for most compatible games, Nintendo Music, and access to the NES, SNES, and Game Boy classic libraries.
Expansion Pack includes all of Standard and adds larger classic-game libraries plus selected downloadable content and upgrade packs under Nintendo’s conditions. The extra tier is most defensible when you already know which additions you will play. Paying more simply because the catalog is larger does not create value if those additions will sit unused.

Switch 2 changes the calculation. Nintendo identifies GameChat, GameCube Classics, and selected upgrade packs as Switch 2-only benefits. A Switch 2 owner interested in those features may have a reason to choose Expansion Pack that an original Switch owner does not.
“A Nintendo Switch Online membership provides access to many online services on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch.”
That official description covers both consoles, but individual benefits still have platform requirements. Check the current comparison and catalog before subscribing because included games and eligibility can change.
US annual prices and the cost of upgrading
Nintendo’s US support pricing table lists these annual membership prices:
| Plan | Standard | Expansion Pack | Expansion Pack premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Individual | $19.99 per year | $49.99 per year | $30.00 per year |
| Family | $34.99 per year | $79.99 per year | $45.00 per year |
These are US prices, not worldwide prices. Nintendo states that membership pricing depends on the country where it is used, so readers elsewhere should check the local Nintendo eShop or support page. Taxes, currency conversion, regional catalogs, and local terms can also affect what appears at checkout.
The individual comparison is straightforward: Expansion Pack costs two and a half times the Standard price, but the meaningful question is whether its additions are worth $30 over a full year. For a family membership, the premium is $45 annually regardless of whether one or eight eligible accounts actually use it.
What Standard includes
Online play in compatible games
Standard provides Nintendo Switch Online access for online features in compatible games. Compatibility is determined by each game’s design; a membership does not make every title an online game. Some games use their own account or service requirements as well, so check the individual game’s current instructions when a feature is important.
NES, SNES, and Game Boy libraries
The base tier includes Nintendo’s NES, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and Game Boy classic libraries. These are subscription benefits, not a purchase of each game. Nintendo can change the available catalog, and access remains tied to an eligible membership and the applicable account.

Save Data Cloud
Save Data Cloud backs up saves for most compatible games. “Most” matters: individual games can be excluded or have special restrictions. Cloud backup is a safety net rather than a guarantee that every save, mode, or game is supported, so review the game’s support information before relying on it as your only copy.
Nintendo Music and other base services
Nintendo lists Nintendo Music and other services as Standard benefits. The exact service list and supported devices can change; use Nintendo’s current plan comparison for the live details instead of treating this article as a permanent catalog.
What Expansion Pack adds
Additional classic systems
Expansion Pack includes the Standard libraries and adds Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, SEGA Genesis, and Virtual Boy collections, according to Nintendo’s official comparison. The release list is changeable. A particular game you remember from an older catalog may not be available in your region or may be added or removed later, so verify the current library before buying specifically for one title.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteGameCube Classics on Switch 2
Nintendo describes GameCube Classics as a Switch 2-exclusive Expansion Pack benefit. This is not an automatic benefit for an original Nintendo Switch. If you own Switch 2 and want this library, confirm that the games you want are currently offered and that your console software and account meet Nintendo’s requirements.
Included DLC and upgrade packs
Nintendo lists selected content such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass and Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise as Expansion Pack benefits. The full underlying game is required to use its DLC. Membership access lets an eligible member use included content at no additional charge while the membership and Nintendo’s conditions apply; it is not permanent ownership of the DLC.
The same distinction applies to upgrade packs. An Expansion Pack subscription can provide access to selected upgrades, but it does not transfer a perpetual license for every item in the catalog. If you cancel or the included entitlement changes, access may end unless you separately own the relevant content.
Switch 2-specific services and accessories
Nintendo marks GameChat, GameCube Classics, and some upgrade packs as Switch 2-only. The optional Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube controller is compatible only with Switch 2. It can make sense for a Switch 2 owner who wants a GameCube-style controller for that library, but buying the controller is not required for the subscription and does not make Expansion Pack worthwhile by itself.

A family membership covers the purchaser’s Nintendo Account family group, up to eight accounts, subject to Nintendo’s group and service rules. The accounts do not all need to be on the same console, but they must be part of the eligible family group. Do not assume that a family plan can be shared with any unrelated account without checking Nintendo’s requirements.

| Number of participating accounts | Standard family cost per account | Expansion Pack family cost per account | Expansion premium per account |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $34.99 | $79.99 | $45.00 |
| 2 | $17.50 | $40.00 | $22.50 |
| 4 | $8.75 | $20.00 | $11.25 |
| 8 | About $4.37 | About $10.00 | About $5.63 |
The eight-account figures are arithmetic from Nintendo’s listed annual prices: $34.99 divided by eight is about $4.37, and $79.99 divided by eight is about $10. These calculations assume all eight accounts participate. An unused family slot does not reduce the amount charged.
For two people, the Expansion Pack premium works out to $22.50 per participating account. For four, it is $11.25; for eight, about $5.63. Those numbers can make Expansion Pack inexpensive, but only if the participating accounts actually use the added libraries or content. A low per-account price is not a benefit to someone who never opens the Expansion Pack services.
Choose Standard when these conditions describe you
- You mainly need online play in compatible games and do not expect to use the premium libraries.
- The NES, SNES, and Game Boy catalogs cover the retro games you want.
- You want Save Data Cloud and Nintendo Music but have no specific Expansion Pack DLC in mind.
- You use an original Switch and have no interest in Switch 2-only benefits.
- You are paying for one account and would rather keep the annual cost at $19.99 than spend $49.99.
- Other members of your household would not use the added libraries, DLC, or upgrades.
Standard is also a reasonable starting point for a new subscriber who is unsure. You can evaluate the base service first rather than paying the premium in advance.

Choose Expansion Pack when these conditions describe you
- You will play the Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, SEGA Genesis, or Virtual Boy collections often enough to justify $30 more per year for an individual account.
- You already own a supported full game and expect to use an included DLC package such as the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass or Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise.
- You own Switch 2 and specifically want GameCube Classics, GameChat, or an eligible Switch 2 upgrade pack.
- Several eligible family-group accounts will use the premium features, reducing the effective cost per user.
- You have checked the current catalog and found the exact games or content you intend to use, rather than relying on a general promise of “more classics.”
Expansion Pack is not automatically better for a retro-game fan. The relevant question is whether the particular systems and games in the current catalog match your interests. A player who only wants NES or SNES games may gain little from the higher tier.
A practical decision method
- List the users. Count the Nintendo Accounts that will genuinely use the membership during the year. For a family plan, verify that each account belongs to the purchaser’s eligible Nintendo Account family group.
- Separate required features from optional ones. Mark online play, cloud saves, and other Standard services that you need. Then make a separate list of premium features you would actually use.
- Name the content. Write down the specific Expansion Pack games, DLC, or upgrades you want. If you cannot name any, assume Standard is the better default.
- Check the platform. Confirm whether each desired feature works on the original Switch, Switch 2, or both. GameCube Classics, GameChat, and some upgrade packs require Switch 2.
- Calculate the premium. Compare $30 for an individual account or $45 for a family plan with the value you would otherwise place on the desired content. For a family plan, divide the annual price by the number of participating accounts, not the maximum of eight unless all eight will use it.
- Check current availability. Catalogs, eligibility, and regional pricing can change. Review Nintendo’s current plan comparison before payment, especially if one title or DLC package is the reason you are upgrading.
How plan changes work
Nintendo says a Standard individual membership can be changed to an Expansion Pack individual or family membership with a remaining-time discount subject to Nintendo’s rules. A Standard family plan can likewise be changed to an Expansion Pack family plan with a remaining-time adjustment under the applicable terms.
An active Expansion Pack membership cannot be changed directly to Standard. After the Expansion Pack term ends, you can choose Standard or another available plan. Because Nintendo can adjust the exact account screens and calculations, open the current subscription settings and follow the instructions shown for your account before confirming a change.
Before upgrading, check which Nintendo Account is signed in, whether automatic renewal is enabled, and whether the target plan is individual or family. A mistaken account or plan type can affect who receives the benefits for the remainder of the term.

- Nintendo says the trial converts to a one-month, auto-renewing membership at the then-current price unless automatic renewal is turned off by the end of the trial.
- Turn off automatic renewal before the stated deadline if you only want to test the service for the trial period.
- Because the trial does not include premium content, it cannot answer whether the N64, Game Boy Advance, Genesis, Virtual Boy, GameCube, or included DLC catalog is worth the Expansion Pack premium.
Common mistakes to avoid
Assuming every classic game is included
Expansion Pack adds systems and a changing selection of titles, not every game released for those systems. Check the live catalog in your region before subscribing for a particular game.
Treating DLC access as ownership
Included DLC requires the associated full game and remains subject to membership conditions. It is access through the plan, not a permanent purchase of the add-on.
Buying Expansion Pack for an original Switch feature that requires Switch 2
GameCube Classics, GameChat, and some upgrade packs are identified as Switch 2-only. Confirm the platform requirement first.

Forgetting automatic renewal
Review renewal settings after starting a membership or trial. The free trial in particular converts to a paid one-month membership unless renewal is disabled in time.
Expecting an immediate downgrade
Nintendo does not allow an active Expansion Pack plan to be changed directly to Standard. Plan the change around the end of the current term.
Bottom line for common buyer situations
| Buyer situation | Usually the better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One player who mainly needs online multiplayer | Standard | The $19.99 US annual price covers the base service without paying a $30 premium for unused additions. |
| One player who wants several premium classic libraries or included DLC | Expansion Pack | The $49.99 annual price buys access to the additional libraries and eligible content under Nintendo’s conditions. |
| Household with two or more active premium users | Expansion Pack family | The $79.99 annual fee is shared across eligible family-group accounts, lowering the effective cost per user. |
| Switch 2 owner seeking GameCube Classics or GameChat | Expansion Pack | Those benefits are identified as Switch 2-only, so Standard cannot provide them. |
| Original Switch household with no interest in premium catalogs | Standard family | It supplies the base benefits at $34.99 per year without paying for additions the household will not use. |
In short, Standard is the value choice for the core service. Expansion Pack earns its higher price through specific libraries, eligible DLC and upgrades, and Switch 2 features. Recheck Nintendo’s current US price, regional terms, catalog, and platform requirements at the time you subscribe.
