Super Mario Sunshine is now available at no additional game charge to subscribers who have both a Nintendo Switch 2 and a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. It is delivered through the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics library; a standard Nintendo Switch Online plan or an older Switch model is not enough.
What “free” means in this release
Nintendo’s announcement, dated August 13, 2026, covers Super Mario Sunshine as part of Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics. Eligible members do not buy the game separately, but Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is a paid, recurring membership. The download remains tied to that membership and Nintendo’s service access rules.

The GameCube catalog is also hardware-limited. Nintendo says GameCube Nintendo Classics are exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2, so the original Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite and Nintendo Switch OLED model cannot use this release through the service.
Who can play Super Mario Sunshine?
| Requirement | What you need |
|---|---|
| Console | Nintendo Switch 2 |
| Membership | Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack |
| Game purchase | No separate purchase for an eligible member |
| Software source | Nintendo eShop, through Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics |
| Availability | Check the local Nintendo eShop because release timing can differ by region |
A standard Nintendo Switch Online subscription does not include the GameCube catalog. It provides Nintendo Classics from NES, Super NES and Game Boy. The Expansion Pack adds Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo GameCube and Virtual Boy libraries, with GameCube access reserved for Switch 2.

How to download Super Mario Sunshine on Switch 2
- Start a Nintendo Switch 2 that is signed in to the Nintendo Account with an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
- Open Nintendo eShop from the HOME Menu.
- Find the Nintendo Classics library and select Free Download. Nintendo’s access guidance uses this button to open the relevant library page.
- Open Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics and choose Super Mario Sunshine.
- Allow the software to install, then launch it from the HOME Menu or from the GameCube Classics library.
If the listing does not appear, verify the signed-in account’s membership, confirm that the console is a Nintendo Switch 2, and check whether the title has reached your region’s eShop. Nintendo’s release schedules can vary by country.
Standard Nintendo Switch Online versus Expansion Pack
| Access option | Classic libraries identified by Nintendo | Super Mario Sunshine |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch Online | NES, Super NES and Game Boy | Not included |
| Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack on Nintendo Switch 2 | NES, Super NES, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo GameCube and Virtual Boy | Included through Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics |
| Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack on an older Switch model | Expansion Pack libraries supported by that hardware | GameCube library is unavailable because Nintendo marks it Switch 2-exclusive |
This is why a subscriber may see other classic systems but still be unable to access Super Mario Sunshine: the membership tier and the console generation are separate requirements.

What Nintendo’s announcement confirms
Nintendo describes Expansion Pack members with a Nintendo Switch 2 as receiving access to classic content from supported systems. Nintendo’s membership FAQ distinguishes the base NES, Super NES and Game Boy libraries from the Expansion Pack additions and specifically labels Nintendo GameCube as exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo Australia’s August 2026 magazine also lists Super Mario Sunshine for Switch 2 through Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics for Expansion Pack members.
