Choose digital if instant, card-free access matters more and you are comfortable keeping the purchase on one Nintendo Account and managing storage. Neither format stores your progress on the game itself: Nintendo Switch save data is kept in the console’s system memory for both physical and downloadable software.
The practical differences are therefore access, account dependence, portability of the game medium, and storage for the download—not a different save system.

The decision in one view
| Question | Physical game card | Digital download |
|---|---|---|
| Where is the game access? | On the game card. Insert the card into the compatible console you are using. | On the Nintendo Account that purchased it, with access managed through Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card and online-license systems. |
| Can it move to another console? | Yes. Move the card and insert it in the other compatible console. | Yes, subject to Nintendo Account, Virtual Game Card, linked-console and online-license rules. |
| Does the game card carry save data? | No. Moving the card does not move your progress. | No. The download and its save data are separate. |
| Where is save data stored? | Console system memory. | Console system memory. |
| Does it use console storage for the game? | The card is the game medium, so you do not download the complete software merely to obtain the card-based copy. Any title-specific storage requirement should still be checked separately. | Yes. The required free space varies by game and by how much storage remains on the console; a microSD card may be needed. |
| Can another person use it? | Yes, if they have the card and a compatible console. One card cannot be inserted in two consoles at once. | Other users on a console can play while the title’s Virtual Game Card is loaded there, subject to Nintendo’s setup rules. |
| What happens if software is deleted? | The card remains available; the save remains in system memory. | Archiving or deleting the software does not delete its save data. The purchaser can redownload it. |

The card is the playable game medium
For a physical release, the game card is the item that supplies the game to the console. Insert it into the Switch console being used, select the game from the HOME Menu, and play. To use that same copy elsewhere, eject the card and insert it into the other compatible console. Nintendo’s multiple-console guidance treats this as a direct, card-based way to use a game across systems.

The practical requirement is possession. The card has to be with the console when you want to start that game. If the card is in a case, another room, or another player’s console, the local console cannot use that copy until the card is returned.
What moves—and what does not
Moving the card moves the game medium, not the player’s progress. Nintendo associates save data with the Nintendo Account and console rather than with the physical card. A card inserted into a second console will therefore launch the game, but it will not automatically bring the first console’s save file with it.
If you need your progress on the second console, use Nintendo’s supported save-transfer process. For games that support it, a Nintendo Switch Online membership can also provide Save Data Cloud Backup. Support is title-dependent, so do not assume every game offers cloud backup.
Sharing a physical copy
A physical card can be handed to another player, who inserts it into a compatible console. This is the clearest format when two people need to use one copy at different times and can pass the card between them. It is not simultaneous access: a single card cannot be inserted in two consoles at once.
Each console and Nintendo Account keeps its own save situation. Lending the card does not merge, copy, or transfer anyone’s progress.
How digital Switch purchases work
The purchasing Nintendo Account controls the purchase
A digital game is purchased through a Nintendo Account and cannot be transferred to a different Nintendo Account. Treat the account as part of the access plan: whoever buys the game should retain reliable access to that account and its sign-in details.
This is different from saying the game is permanently available independent of the account. Nintendo’s support guidance describes account-based access, Virtual Game Cards, and online-license conditions; it does not describe a digital purchase as an account-free object that can simply be reassigned.

Virtual Game Cards
Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card system gives a purchased digital title a console-level loading state. When the virtual card is loaded on a console, the game can be played offline there, and other users on that console can play it as well, subject to Nintendo’s rules. Nintendo also provides a way to load and eject virtual cards between linked consoles.
This makes a loaded digital title behave more like a locally available game on that console, while still remaining tied to the purchasing account. Ejecting the virtual card or changing which linked console has it loaded changes where that local access is available.
Online-license access on another console
For a console where the virtual card is not loaded, Nintendo’s digital-purchase and multiple-console guidance describes online-license conditions, including an internet connection. In practical terms, a digital purchase may be usable on more than one console, but the exact experience depends on which console has the virtual card and whether the console can satisfy the required online check.
Do not plan a digital library on the assumption that every console will always run every purchase offline. Check the current Virtual Game Card and online-license behavior for the consoles you intend to use.
The convenience trade-off
Digital removes the physical steps of finding, carrying, inserting, and swapping a card. A game can remain available from the HOME Menu after installation, which suits players who revisit several titles in one session or travel without a game case.
The cost of that convenience is account dependence and storage management. A download needs enough free space for that particular game, and access recovery starts with the account that purchased it.
Save data: the rule that applies to both formats
Save files live in system memory
Nintendo says Switch save data is stored in the console’s system memory whether the software is downloadable or being played from a game card. The physical card is not a save-file container, and the digital installation is not the location of the progress file.

That distinction explains a common surprise: inserting a card into another console does not make the original save appear there. The second console has its own system-memory data until you perform a supported transfer or restore a supported cloud backup.

microSD cards do not store Switch save data
Nintendo’s Data Management guidance says save data cannot be stored or copied to a microSD card. A larger card can help hold downloadable software and other data, but it is not a general save-game backup device.
If protecting progress is your concern, use the console’s supported save-transfer tools or Save Data Cloud Backup where the individual game supports it. Buying a larger microSD card alone does not solve save migration.
Deleting or archiving software
Archiving or deleting downloaded software leaves its save data intact. You can remove the software to reclaim space, then redownload it later and continue with the existing save on that console.
This behavior is useful when a digital game is large and you are not playing it for a while. It does not, however, make the game independent of the purchasing account: redownload it through the account that owns the purchase.
Moving a game to another Switch console
Physical card procedure
- Close the game on the first console and eject the game card using the console’s normal card-ejection procedure.
- Take the card to the other compatible Switch console.
- Insert the card, select the game from the HOME Menu, and start it.
- If you need the original progress, use Nintendo’s supported save-transfer process or a supported Save Data Cloud Backup rather than expecting the card to carry the save.
The card itself is the handoff. No account reassignment is involved merely because the card is inserted into another compatible console.
Digital procedure with Virtual Game Cards
- Sign in to the Nintendo Account that purchased the game.
- Open the console’s Virtual Game Cards menu and select the title.
- Load the virtual card on the linked console where you want local access.
- On that console, the loaded title can be played offline, and other users on that console can use it under Nintendo’s rules.
- When you need the title on another linked console, use the same Virtual Game Card controls to eject or load it there as prompted.
The exact on-screen sequence can vary with Nintendo’s current system software, so follow the labels shown in the Virtual Game Cards menu. The important distinction is that you are moving a digital access state between linked consoles, not transferring the purchase to another Nintendo Account.

When the target console does not have the virtual card loaded
Nintendo’s online-license rules apply when a title is accessed from a console where its virtual card is not loaded. Ensure that console has the required internet connection and that the purchasing account’s access is available. If you need predictable offline play, load the virtual card on the console you expect to use offline.
Sharing games in a household
Physical sharing
Physical sharing is straightforward: give the other player the card, and they insert it into a compatible console. The limitation is physical availability. Whoever does not have the card cannot start that copy, and the same card cannot serve two consoles simultaneously.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBecause saves remain in each console’s system memory, sharing the card does not overwrite one player’s progress with another’s. It also does not automatically give either player the other’s save.
Digital sharing on one console
Nintendo says other users on a console can play a digital game while its Virtual Game Card is loaded there. This can be convenient for a household using one primary console, because each user does not need to purchase the same title separately for that local use.
The arrangement still follows the purchasing account’s controls. If the virtual card is moved to another linked console, local availability changes accordingly; where it is not loaded, online-license conditions may apply.
Choosing for two consoles used at the same time
Neither format should be described as an unrestricted two-console, one-purchase solution. A physical copy is limited by the one card. A digital copy is governed by Virtual Game Card placement and online-license rules. If two people need simultaneous access on separate consoles, check Nintendo’s current account and license requirements for that exact setup before buying.
Storage planning for digital games
Why there is no universal storage number
Nintendo says the need for a microSD card depends on each game’s storage requirements and the amount of free storage remaining on the console. There is therefore no honest single number that tells every player whether a microSD card is necessary.

Before downloading, check the title’s displayed storage requirement and compare it with free console space. Leave room for the system and other software rather than treating every last available gigabyte as usable for one installation.
What a microSD card can and cannot do
- It can provide additional space for downloadable software and other supported data.
- It does not store or copy Switch save data.
- It does not remove the need to keep the purchasing Nintendo Account available.
- Its usefulness depends on the games you own and the free space already present on the console.
Managing a full console
- Open the console’s data-management controls and identify software you are not currently using.
- Archive or delete downloadable software when you need space; Nintendo says the save data remains.
- Redownload the title later from the purchasing account through the Virtual Game Cards menu or Nintendo eShop.
- Keep enough free space for the particular game you want to install rather than relying on a generic storage estimate.
For a physical card, the card itself is the primary game medium. For a digital copy, available storage is a prerequisite for installation, while save data still occupies system memory regardless of format.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Recovering a digital game that is missing
A missing icon does not necessarily mean the purchase has vanished. Nintendo’s redownload instructions point to the Virtual Game Cards menu or Nintendo eShop and require the account that purchased the content.
Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm that the console is signed in to the Nintendo Account used for the original purchase.
- Open the Virtual Game Cards menu and look for the title.
- If it is not shown there, check the Nintendo eShop while using that same purchasing account and open the redownload controls.
- Verify that the console has enough free storage for the game’s stated requirement.
- Redownload the software. If you previously archived or deleted it, Nintendo says its save data remains on the console.
If the title still cannot be found, the first checks are account identity and the relevant Virtual Game Card or eShop redownload controls. A digital purchase cannot be moved to a different Nintendo Account as a workaround.
Which format fits common situations?
| Your priority | More suitable starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You regularly carry games between two compatible consoles. | Physical | The card is the portable game medium; insert it into the console you are using. |
| You want to play without carrying or swapping cards. | Digital | The installed title is available from the console, subject to account and license rules. |
| You frequently lend a game to another person. | Physical | Handing over the card gives the other player the medium needed to launch it. |
| Several users play on one household console. | Digital can be convenient | Other users can play while the Virtual Game Card is loaded on that console. |
| Your console has little free storage. | Physical may simplify planning | Downloads have game-specific storage requirements; save data still uses system memory in both formats. |
| You are most worried about losing progress. | Either format, with a save plan | Both use system-memory saves. Use supported transfers or cloud backup where the game offers it. |
| You may lose access to the buyer’s Nintendo Account. | Physical is less account-dependent for game access | Digital purchases cannot be transferred to another account and recovery uses the purchasing account. |
These are format decisions, not guarantees about a particular game’s content, price, or release packaging. Check the individual title when a specific storage requirement or save-backup option matters.
Common mistakes and fixes
| Symptom or assumption | What is actually happening | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| “I moved the cartridge, so my save should be on the other console.” | The card is the game medium; save data is associated with the console and Nintendo Account. | Use a supported save transfer or, where available, restore Save Data Cloud Backup. |
| “A microSD card will back up my saves.” | Nintendo says Switch save data cannot be stored or copied to microSD. | Use Nintendo’s save-transfer tools or supported cloud backup. |
| “Deleting a digital game erased my progress.” | Archiving or deleting software leaves its save data intact. | Redownload the title from the purchasing account. |
| “Every console with my account can play the digital game offline.” | Offline play is associated with a console where the Virtual Game Card is loaded; other access can require online-license checks. | Load the virtual card on the console intended for offline use, or provide the required internet connection. |
| “I can move a digital purchase to another account.” | Nintendo says digital purchases cannot be transferred between Nintendo Accounts. | Use the original purchasing account for Virtual Game Card and redownload controls. |
| “One physical card supports two consoles at once.” | A single card cannot be inserted in two consoles simultaneously. | Move the card between sessions or obtain another copy. |
| “All games include cloud-save backup.” | Save Data Cloud Backup is available only for supported games. | Check the individual title’s support before relying on cloud recovery. |
A purchase checklist
- Where will you play? If the answer includes multiple compatible consoles, decide whether carrying a card or managing Virtual Game Cards suits you better.
- Who controls the purchase account? For digital, confirm that the buyer will retain access to the Nintendo Account.
- Will more than one person use the copy? Physical sharing requires passing the card; digital sharing depends on which console has the virtual card loaded.
- How much free space is available? Digital storage needs are game-specific. Check the title before downloading and consider a microSD card if the console cannot accommodate it.
- How will progress move? Plan a supported save transfer or cloud backup where available; neither format carries saves simply by being moved.
- Do you need offline play on a particular console? For digital, load the Virtual Game Card there. A console without the loaded card may be subject to online-license conditions.
What Nintendo’s rules do not establish
The official support guidance used for this comparison does not provide a universal price comparison, average download size, loading-time benchmark, sales statistic, consumer-preference statistic, or guarantee of resale value. Those factors vary by title, market, edition, account status, and retailer. They should not be used as blanket reasons to prefer one format for every game.
Likewise, the rules above describe access and data handling, not a promise that every physical release or digital title has identical features. For a particular game, verify its storage requirement, save-backup support, and compatibility with the console you intend to use.
