Neither format is always cheaper. For any particular Switch game, compare the current price of the same edition in Nintendo’s regional eShop with the complete, delivered cost of a condition-matched used cartridge. Digital usually wins on convenience, while a physical copy can recover part of its cost through lending or resale. That recovery is only potential: demand, condition, timing, marketplace fees and shipping determine what you actually get back.
This guide uses US pricing as its reference point because Nintendo of America’s storefront is the cited official source. Taxes, currency, inventory and discounts differ elsewhere, so a result for the United States should not be transferred to another region without checking that region’s prices.

The direct answer: calculate the net cost for one exact game
Start with the same title, edition and included content. A standard digital edition is not an apples-to-apples comparison with a physical collector’s edition, a cartridge bundled with downloadable content, or a listing missing its case when the case matters to you.

Use this basic comparison:
- Digital cost: the current regional eShop sale price, plus any applicable tax.
- Used physical cost: the cartridge listing price, shipping and applicable tax, adjusted for condition and completeness.
- Potential physical recovery: a realistic future sale amount based on completed sales, minus selling fees and your shipping cost.
If the delivered used price is lower today and you value the option to lend or resell, physical is often the stronger deal. If the eShop discount is deep enough to undercut comparable cartridges, or you place a high value on instant access and no cartridge swapping, digital can be better. This is a decision rule, not a universal measured savings rate; no publisher statistic establishes that one format is always cheaper.

Check the exact digital price in your region
Use the official US storefront for US purchases
Nintendo’s Nintendo Official Site: Sales and Deals lists current US digital offers and regular prices. Prices and promotions change, so record the price on the day you would buy rather than relying on an old article, screenshot or remembered discount. Include sales tax if your checkout applies it.
Read the regular price and the sale price together
A percentage-off label does not tell you whether the current offer is unusually good for that title. The regular price gives context, but the useful comparison is the checkout price against a used copy delivered to your address. A short sale can also expire before you decide to sell another game, so timing matters when you are comparing a purchase you can make now with a resale plan months away.
Use price history as context, not as a promise
NTPrices tracks eShop prices and histories across regions and explains that discounts vary by title and storefront. Its page snapshot accessed October 13, 2026, reported 49,509 games tracked, 48-plus eShop regions, 8,080 games on sale and 1.9 million prices logged. Those are tracker-scale metrics, not evidence that digital games are cheaper than used cartridges. Check the game’s own history, currency and region before treating a discount as exceptional.

A “used price” is not one standardized number
Second-hand listings can combine loose cartridges, complete copies with original cases and inserts, and copies with cosmetic or functional wear. Comparison pages may group condition categories, while individual sellers describe them differently. The relevant number is the specific listing’s delivered total, not a headline “starting at” price.

NTPrices’ Used Switch Games & Second-Hand Cartridge Prices page describes used offer categories and advises checking the actual listing condition. Open the seller’s listing and verify whether the cartridge, case, cover art, inserts and any advertised extras are included. Add shipping and tax before comparing with the eShop total.
Match condition to what you would buy new
If you keep boxed games, compare a complete-in-box physical copy with the digital purchase only after deciding whether the case has value to you. If you only need a working cartridge, a loose copy may be the relevant alternative. Do not treat a lower price for a missing case as a saving if you would immediately spend money replacing the missing pieces.
Confirm the edition and downloads
Check the title, region or edition, language information where relevant, and whether the listing requires a separate download. A cartridge can contain only part of a game or be tied to an edition with different included content. The comparison should use the same playable package, not merely the same title text.

Use completed sales, not asking prices
Physical ownership creates a resale route that a downloaded copy does not provide in the same way. It also creates work and uncertainty. A seller’s current asking price is not proof that buyers pay that amount. PriceCharting says its Nintendo Switch price guide uses sold listings from eBay and other marketplaces and separates loose, complete-in-box and new values. Use the condition that matches your copy.

CartridgeBond’s methodology page, last updated April 28, 2026, says it cross-checks rolling eBay sold listings, PriceCharting complete-condition values and observed local Wisconsin activity. That approach illustrates why evidence and location matter; neither guide guarantees the amount you will receive.
Subtract the costs of selling
Estimate the sale proceeds you could realistically receive, then subtract marketplace fees, payment costs and postage or other shipping. If you sell locally, account for travel or the time required to arrange the handoff. The resulting figure is a possible recovery, not an automatic discount applied at checkout.
Demand and timing can change the result
A popular title may retain demand, while a heavily discounted or frequently bundled game may have many competing copies. Your future price can also move when a new edition, sequel, subscription inclusion or larger sale changes buyers’ alternatives. Because those variables are not fixed, treat resale as an option with uncertain value rather than as guaranteed money back.
A comparison table for the two purchase routes
| Factor | Digital eShop purchase | Used physical cartridge |
|---|---|---|
| Price to compare | Current regional sale price plus applicable tax | Listing price plus shipping and tax, for the exact condition and edition |
| Where to verify | Nintendo’s regional storefront; US reference: Nintendo sales page | Individual seller listing; used-offer categories and cautions at NTPrices |
| Price history | Regional trackers can show prior discounts; see NTPrices | Use completed-sale guides, not only current asks |
| Condition | Digital files do not have cartridge or case wear | Loose, complete-in-box and other grades can have materially different values |
| Resale or lending | No equivalent physical cartridge to lend or sell | Can potentially be lent or resold, subject to demand, fees, shipping and condition |
| Access | Download and launch without swapping cartridges | Requires the cartridge to be available when you play |
| Evidence limitation | No official statistic measures total digital-sale cost against used physical cost for the same game | Guide values are estimates based on marketplace evidence, not guaranteed proceeds |
Run the same-title calculation step by step
- Write down the identity of the game. Record the title, standard or deluxe edition, included downloadable content, region and whether you require a box.
- Capture the digital checkout total. Open the appropriate Nintendo storefront, note the current sale price and add any applicable tax. Record the date because the offer can change.
- Collect several physical listings. Look for the same edition and inspect condition, completeness, seller description, return terms and location. Do not compare a loose cartridge with a complete copy without noting the difference.
- Calculate delivered physical cost. Add shipping and tax to the listing price. If multiple listings are available, use the realistic price for a copy you would actually accept rather than the cheapest unusable or incomplete offer.
- Estimate a future sale. Check sold, completed transactions for the same condition using the evidence described by PriceCharting or CartridgeBond. Do not substitute an unsold asking price.
- Deduct selling friction. Subtract marketplace fees, payment charges and outbound shipping. If you expect to keep the game indefinitely, set potential recovery to zero for this comparison.
- Add non-price priorities. Note whether you will lend the cartridge, share a console, avoid swapping cards, play while travelling, or want a shelf copy. These preferences can legitimately decide a close result.
- Choose the lower net cost that fits your use. Compare digital cost with physical cost minus only the recovery you regard as realistic. Keep the calculation tied to this title; another game’s sale pattern or resale demand does not transfer automatically.
When digital is usually the better deal
The sale price undercuts a comparable cartridge
Digital has the clearest financial advantage when the current regional eShop total is below the delivered price of a used copy in the condition you would buy. A temporary discount can create that gap even if the game’s regular digital price is higher than physical prices outside the sale.

You value immediate, always-available access
A download avoids locating a cartridge, carrying it between consoles and swapping cards when you change games. If those conveniences are worth more to you than uncertain resale proceeds, include that value in your decision rather than treating it as irrelevant.
You do not expect to sell
Resale only changes the economics if you actually sell and receive a net amount. For a game you expect to keep permanently, compare the purchase totals directly and do not assign an assumed buy-back value.

The delivered listing is cheaper today
Physical wins the immediate-price test when a condition-matched cartridge, including shipping and tax, costs less than the current digital checkout total. Verify that the lower price is not explained by a missing case, a different edition or required downloads.
Recommended Free Tools
You will lend or resell the cartridge
A cartridge can move between people or return to the market after you finish it. That flexibility can reduce your eventual net cost, but only if local demand and your selling method support a realistic recovery. Keep sold-listing evidence and fee estimates separate from the purchase price.

You prefer a tangible collection
Some buyers intentionally pay for a case, cover art and a physical shelf collection. That is a preference, not a universal monetary advantage. Compare complete-condition listings when those features are part of what you want.
Regional, tax and timing cautions
Do not mix currencies or storefronts
NTPrices notes that eShop prices vary by region. A tracker figure in euros, pounds or another currency cannot be inserted into a US comparison without labeling the region and converting the full checkout conditions. Use the storefront where your Nintendo account will purchase the game.
Include delivery and tax on both sides where applicable
Digital tax may appear at checkout, while physical purchases can add both sales tax and shipping. Comparing a pre-tax eShop number with a delivered physical total can reverse the apparent winner.
Record the date of the offer
Sales end, listings sell and replacement inventory appears. Write down the observation date for each price. A conclusion made during one eShop promotion may not apply after the promotion ends, and a used listing’s price can change before you order.
Common mistakes that produce a false bargain
- Comparing different editions: A deluxe digital package and a standard cartridge do not contain the same value.
- Using the cheapest headline listing: A loose, damaged or incomplete copy may not meet your requirements.
- Ignoring shipping and tax: These costs belong in the delivered total.
- Treating an asking price as resale cash: Use completed transactions and subtract selling costs.
- Counting resale before deciding to sell: If you keep the game, the potential recovery never materializes.
- Assuming one region’s discount applies elsewhere: Storefront prices and promotions are regional.
- Using tracker totals as savings evidence: The number of games or prices a tracker covers says nothing about which format is cheaper for your title.
- Leaving convenience out of the decision: Cartridge swapping, lending and instant access affect the value you receive even when sticker prices are close.
A practical decision checklist
- Is the title and edition exactly the same?
- Did you check the current price in your own Nintendo storefront?
- Did you add digital tax where applicable?
- Did you inspect the physical listing’s cartridge condition, case, inserts and included content?
- Did you add physical shipping and tax?
- If resale matters, did you use sold prices for the same condition?
- Did you subtract marketplace fees and your shipping cost from the resale estimate?
- Would you actually lend or sell the cartridge, or are you likely to keep it?
- Does convenience outweigh a small price difference for how you play?
- Did you record the date and region so the comparison remains auditable?
Bottom line for buyers
Choose the digital sale when its current, taxed regional price beats the delivered cost of an acceptable used copy or when instant access is your priority. Choose used physical when the same edition costs less delivered and you value lending, collecting or a realistic resale path. Make the decision title by title, using condition-matched prices and completed-sale evidence; there is no universal format winner.
