Short answer: a Nintendo Switch can store downloaded games, updates and downloadable content in either its built-in system memory or a compatible microSD card. Once a card is inserted, Nintendo says it becomes the default location for newly downloaded software. Your game saves are different: saved progress stays in the console’s system memory and cannot be copied to or stored on a microSD card.
That means a card is optional when your internal storage has enough free space, but it is the practical way to expand room for a large digital library. Choose the card for software capacity, not as a backup destination for saves.

What goes where on a Nintendo Switch
The Switch has two storage locations that serve different purposes. The built-in system memory is part of the console. A removable microSD card adds capacity for software and media but does not replace the console’s save-data storage.

Download data is not save data
A downloaded game is the program itself, plus any patches and DLC. Save data records your progress, settings and other player-specific information. Moving, archiving or deleting the downloaded program does not move or erase its save data. If you later redownload the same software on the same console, the existing save can be available again, provided it was not separately deleted.
What Nintendo means by “default save location”
Nintendo’s microSD guidance says that when a card is inserted, it becomes the default save location for downloadable software. In this context, “save location” means where new downloadable software data is written; it does not mean that game saves are placed on the card. Save files remain in system memory.
Do you need a microSD card?
There is no universal capacity that every Switch owner needs. Nintendo advises checking the storage requirement on the game’s current eShop listing or on the physical package. Requirements vary by title and can change when software receives updates.
System memory is enough when
- You buy most games physically or keep only a few digital games installed.
- The console’s Data Management screen shows enough free space for the games, patches and DLC you intend to install.
- You are comfortable archiving software you do not currently play and redownloading it later.
A microSD card is worthwhile when
- Your digital library includes several large games or frequent updates.
- The console repeatedly reports that there is not enough free space.
- You want to keep more downloadable titles installed without repeatedly deleting or archiving them.
- You also store screenshots or captured video on the console.
A card is an expansion option, not a requirement for digital games. Select capacity according to the number and type of games you expect to download, rather than assuming that a particular size is suitable for every player.

Which cards work with the original Nintendo Switch family?
Nintendo lists microSD, microSDHC and microSDXC cards for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite and Nintendo Switch OLED Model. The supported ranges are:
| Card type | Capacity listed by Nintendo | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| microSD | Up to 2 GB | Supported |
| microSDHC | 4 GB–32 GB | Supported |
| microSDXC | 64 GB–2 TB | A system update is required before use |
Nintendo recommends a UHS-I-compatible card with a transfer speed of 60–95 MB/s. The company says higher transfer speed provides a better gameplay experience, but its support guidance is compatibility advice rather than an independent ranking of retail cards. Cards are sold separately.
Switch 2 is different
Do not apply the original Switch card list to Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo’s microSD FAQ says Switch 2 accepts only microSD Express cards. A standard microSD, microSDHC or microSDXC card intended for the original Switch family is not the same requirement. Confirm the console model before buying a card.
How to check space before downloading
- Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
- Select Data Management to view available system-memory and microSD capacity.
- Open the game’s eShop listing, or check its physical packaging, for the required storage.
- Allow additional room for updates and DLC if you plan to install them.
The requirement shown for a game is not a permanent promise of its future size. Patches and downloadable content can add data, so leaving some headroom avoids an installation failing at the final step.

How to install and use a microSD card
- Choose a card that matches your console: the original Switch family supports the microSD types in Nintendo’s table above; Switch 2 requires microSD Express.
- Update the original Switch system before using a microSDXC card, because Nintendo requires a system update for the 64 GB–2 TB format.
- Power the console off before inserting or removing the card. Insert it into the console’s microSD slot according to the model’s hardware instructions.
- Restart the console and open System Settings > Data Management to confirm that the card is recognized.
- Download new software normally. With a card inserted, Nintendo says downloadable software defaults to the card when space is available.
The card stores software data, updates, DLC and supported captures. It does not become a location for game saves, and using one does not transfer existing saves away from system memory.
Can you move an existing game from system memory to a card?
Yes, for eligible software data on current U.S. Nintendo instructions. The option is limited: save data cannot be migrated, and some update data cannot be moved. Nintendo has also published regional guidance saying software data cannot be moved and recommending deletion or archiving followed by a redownload with a card inserted. Because the instructions differ by region and the menu only offers eligible items, use the option that actually appears on your console rather than assuming every file can be transferred.
Move eligible data using the console menu
- Insert the compatible microSD card and make sure the console recognizes it.
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select Data Management.
- Select Move Data Between System / microSD Card.
- Choose whether to move data from system memory to the microSD card, or from the card to system memory.
- Select the eligible software and confirm the move.
The menu determines what can be moved. If a title, save file or update is not offered, it is not eligible for that operation. Do not interrupt the console while data is being moved.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen moving is unavailable
Archive or delete the downloaded software, leave the save data intact, then redownload it after the card is inserted. Archiving removes the software files while preserving save data; deleting downloaded software likewise does not erase the save unless you separately choose to delete the save data. Redownloading can take time and uses your internet connection, so it is not a direct transfer of every file.

What to do when the Switch says there is not enough room
- Open System Settings > Data Management and review which games, updates and captures use the most space.
- Check the game’s current eShop requirement and compare it with the free space shown for the destination storage.
- Archive or delete software you are not using. The downloaded program is removed, but its save data remains in system memory.
- Install a compatible microSD card if you want to keep more downloadable software available locally.
- If a card is already installed, verify that it is recognized and that the download is being directed to it.
- Redownload archived software when you are ready to play it again.
If a card is full, moving eligible software back to system memory will only help when the console has enough internal space. Saves still occupy system memory, so a card cannot solve a problem caused solely by insufficient save-data space.

“The card will back up my progress.”
It will not. Nintendo says game save data cannot be saved or copied to a microSD card. Treat the card as software expansion, not a save backup.
“A bigger card makes every game run faster.”
Nintendo recommends UHS-I and a 60–95 MB/s transfer-speed range and says higher transfer speed gives a better gameplay experience. That guidance does not establish a universal fastest card or guarantee a particular loading-time improvement for every game.
“Any high-capacity microSD card works in every Switch.”
Original Switch, Switch Lite and Switch OLED support the listed microSD family, with a system update required for microSDXC. Switch 2 requires microSD Express. Capacity and interface are both part of compatibility.

“Physical games never use storage.”
A game card supplies the game’s main data, but updates, DLC, screenshots and captures can still consume system memory or microSD space. Check each title’s requirement instead of assuming that a cartridge leaves storage untouched.
“Deleting a game deletes my progress.”
Archiving or deleting downloaded software leaves its save data unaffected. Be careful not to choose a separate command that deletes save data when cleaning up storage.
Choosing between system memory and microSD in practice
| Your situation | Best first choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One or two digital games and plenty of free space | Use system memory | No purchase is needed while internal capacity is sufficient. |
| Many large digital games kept installed | Add a compatible microSD card | New software can default to the card, reducing pressure on internal space. |
| Mostly physical games with occasional patches | Start with system memory | Monitor update, DLC and capture usage before buying expansion. |
| Console is full but saves must remain available | Archive or delete software, or add a card | These actions remove or relocate program data while saves remain in system memory. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Use microSD Express only | Its card requirement differs from the original Switch family. |
In practical terms, use system memory until it becomes a constraint. Add a Nintendo Switch-compatible microSDXC UHS-I card when your download habits justify more room, and keep the distinction clear: the card expands installed software capacity; it does not hold your game saves.
