Sometimes—but not automatically. Nintendo Switch demo progress carries into the paid game only when the individual title supports it. Official pages confirm this for Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX and HARVESTELLA, but those examples do not establish a console-wide rule. Check the exact game’s official page or support FAQ before assuming your progress, items, or unlocks will transfer.
A Nintendo Switch Online Game Trial is a separate case: it is a time-limited downloadable full game, and Nintendo says its save remains available so you can continue after buying the game.

The short answer: demo saves are title-specific
There is no universal Nintendo Switch setting that makes every demo save compatible with the full release. A publisher has to build and document the handoff for that particular game. Some demos use a save format the full game can read; others may be separate software with no supported import at all.

That means “I downloaded a demo” is not enough information to predict what happens when you purchase the game. Before you start, look for an explicit statement such as “save data can be carried over,” “continue from the demo,” or “transfer demo progress” on the game’s official page or support site. If the wording is absent, treat transfer as unconfirmed rather than promised.

Even when a title supports carryover, the official statement may only promise the save itself or story progress. It may not specify every item, achievement, bonus, setting, or downloadable add-on. Do not infer that every unlock transfers unless the publisher says so.
Confirmed ordinary-demo examples
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX
The Pokémon Company’s official page gives an unusually direct answer. It says the demo covers the early part of the story and that players can carry the demo save data to the full version:
“Aside from being able to play the early part of the story in this demo version, you can also carry that save data over to the full version.”

This is confirmation for that game, not evidence that all Switch demos work the same way. The page does not create a general Nintendo policy for unrelated titles.

“Yes, save data from the demo version can be carried over to the full game.”
Again, the useful conclusion is title-specific compatibility. The answer confirms a supported route from this demo to this full game; it does not describe a universal list of transferable data for every platform or edition.
Demo versus Nintendo Switch Online Game Trial
Nintendo uses “Game Trial” for something different from an ordinary demo. Its Game Trials FAQ defines one as “a free, downloadable full version of a game made available to Nintendo Switch Online members.” Access lasts only for a set period, and membership is required for the trial.

Nintendo’s FAQ also answers the “full game” question directly: a Game Trial lets you experience the full game, but it is playable only for a set period. When the period ends, the save is not automatically erased. If you purchase the game, you can pick up where you stopped, subject to the game’s normal save behavior.
Do not apply that Game Trial guarantee to an ordinary demo. A trial’s save-retention policy comes from Nintendo’s Game Trials system; a demo-to-full-game import is controlled by the specific publisher and title.

What happens if you archive or delete the demo?
Nintendo’s Data Management FAQ separates software from save data. Switch game save data is stored in the console’s system memory, not on the microSD card. Archiving or deleting downloaded software does not itself delete that save data.
This is useful if you need storage space: you can remove the demo software and later redownload it without treating the archive operation as a save wipe. It still does not prove that a full-game installation will recognize the remaining save. Save retention and save compatibility are different questions:
- Retention: Is the save file still present on the console after software is archived or deleted? Nintendo says the save is unaffected by those software-management actions.
- Compatibility: Can the full game’s software identify and import that save? Only the game’s documented support can answer this.
Do not delete the save from the console’s save-data management screen merely because you removed the demo. Deleting the save is a separate action from archiving the software and can remove the progress you hoped to preserve.
Same console, different console, and cloud assumptions
Continuing on the same Switch
Buying the full game on the same console is the simplest scenario, but it still depends on title support. Keep the demo save on the system, install or launch the full game, and follow any in-game import prompt. If the publisher’s instructions require a particular regional or platform version, match those requirements rather than assuming any release will read the file.
Moving the save to another Switch
Console-to-console migration is separate from demo-to-full-game carryover. Nintendo’s “How to Transfer Your Save Data To a Nearby Console” instructions describe moving save files between systems and require the same Nintendo Account to be linked to the relevant users on both consoles.

A nearby transfer can affect data already on the destination system; Nintendo’s directions warn that existing save data may be overwritten. Read the current transfer instructions on both consoles before confirming. A successful console transfer still does not turn an unsupported demo save into a compatible full-game save—the receiving full game must support the format.
Do not assume a microSD move is a save transfer
Because Nintendo stores save data in system memory rather than on the microSD card, moving or replacing a card is not the same as moving a save. Software can be redownloaded, but the save must remain on the original console or be moved through Nintendo’s supported save-transfer process.
A practical check before you buy
- Identify the software type. Confirm whether you are using an ordinary demo or a Nintendo Switch Online Game Trial. The latter has Nintendo’s separate save-continuation policy.
- Open the exact title’s official page or support FAQ. Search within that page for “demo save,” “carry over,” “transfer,” or “full version.” A statement about another platform, sequel, or regional release is not confirmation for your copy.
- Record what the statement actually promises. Note whether it mentions story progress, save data generally, a one-time import, or specific bonuses. Do not expand a narrow promise into “everything transfers.”
- Keep the demo save intact. Archiving the software is different from deleting save data. If you need space, use software archiving rather than the save-data deletion option.
- Check the console scenario. Same-console continuation and moving a save to a second Switch are different operations. If you are changing consoles, review Nintendo’s nearby-transfer requirements and the possibility of overwriting destination data.
- Follow the full game’s first-launch instructions. If an import prompt appears, select the demo save deliberately. If no prompt appears, do not repeatedly delete and reinstall software; check the publisher’s support instructions first.
Common misunderstandings and fixes
“Every Switch demo should transfer because Nintendo made the console.”
Demo behavior is implemented by each game. The confirmed examples show that transfer is possible, not universal. The fix is to verify the exact title rather than rely on the platform.
“Deleting the demo deleted my progress.”
Archiving or deleting downloaded software does not itself delete Switch save data, according to Nintendo. Check the console’s save-data management separately before concluding that progress is gone. This retention rule still cannot guarantee that the full game will import it.

Nintendo describes a Game Trial as a time-limited full game for Nintendo Switch Online members and explicitly distinguishes it from a demo. Its save-continuation answer therefore should not be used to predict the behavior of an unrelated demo.

“Moving the microSD card will move my demo save.”
Save data is stored in system memory, not on the microSD card. Use Nintendo’s supported save-transfer process for a second console, with the same Nintendo Account linked to users on both systems.
“If the save transfers, every bonus must transfer too.”
The official examples confirm save carryover, but the reviewed statements do not provide a universal inventory of transferred items, unlocks, settings, or DLC. Treat those details as unknown until the title’s publisher specifies them.
What the official evidence can—and cannot—establish
Official documentation confirms demo-to-full-game carryover for Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX and HARVESTELLA. Nintendo separately confirms that a Game Trial save remains available after the trial and can continue after purchase. Nintendo also confirms that archiving or deleting downloaded software leaves save data unaffected, and that nearby save transfer requires the same Nintendo Account on users of both consoles.

When checking a game’s support page, wording like the following is strong evidence:
- “You can also carry that save data over to the full version.”
- “Save data from the demo version can be carried over to the full game.”
- For a Game Trial: “A Game Trial is a free, downloadable full version of a game made available to Nintendo Switch Online members.”
Look for an explicit statement tied to the exact title and Switch version. If the page only says “try the game” or describes the available content without mentioning save carryover, consider transfer unconfirmed.
