Nintendo Switch eShop purchase not downloading: fixes to try

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

If a Nintendo Switch eShop purchase is not downloading, first establish whether the purchase completed. Check the purchasing account’s balance, Nintendo’s service-status page, your internet connection, the download progress, available storage, and the Virtual Game Card for the account that bought the item. A title marked “Purchased” may be owned but not installed.

Work through the checks below in order. They separate a failed transaction from a delayed download, a full memory card, and content that is owned but hidden or not loaded on the console.

Identify what “not downloading” means

The message or symptom usually points to a different fix. Use this triage table before changing settings or buying storage.

What you see Most likely branch Start here
The eShop balance is unchanged and there is no download icon The transaction may not have completed Verify the purchasing account and check Nintendo service availability
A download icon is present but the bar does not move The download is paused, offline, or waiting for the service Close running software, refresh download progress, and test the connection
An error says there is not enough space System memory or the microSD card lacks capacity Check the game’s listed requirement and free space
The eShop says “Purchased,” but the game is absent from HOME The purchase belongs to this account but the software is not currently loaded Open Virtual Game Cards and load the item on this system
The item is absent from Virtual Game Cards The card may be hidden or redownload may be unavailable Check hidden cards, then use Nintendo’s missing-content support route

Do not treat ownership, installation, and download progress as the same state. They are separate checks, and resolving one does not automatically resolve the others.

  • Instantly add up to 256GB (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
  • Store your downloaded games, screenshots and video captures in 1 place so you can travel light.

1. Confirm that the purchase completed

Check the balance on the purchasing account

Open Nintendo eShop with the Nintendo Account that placed the order and check its eShop balance. Nintendo’s missing-game guidance says that if the balance remains unchanged, the order did not go through. In that case, the console has no completed purchase to download. Verify that you were signed in to the intended account before attempting the purchase again.

If the balance was reduced, do not buy the title a second time. Continue with the download, storage, and Virtual Game Card checks so you do not create a duplicate charge.

Check Nintendo service availability

Open Nintendo’s network maintenance and service-status page and look for an outage or scheduled maintenance affecting Nintendo eShop or downloads. An interruption can delay delivery even when the purchase itself succeeded. If maintenance is in progress, leave the transaction alone and retry after service is restored.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for a download indicator

Check HOME for the game or a download icon. If an icon is already present, allow that process to finish before treating the purchase as missing. A queued or delayed download is different from an order that never completed.

2. Resume a stalled or paused download

Close software that may be using the console

Some Nintendo Switch games pause downloads while software is being played. Save your progress, return to HOME, and close the running game or application. Keep the console connected to the internet while the download resumes.

Refresh download progress

  1. From HOME, select the user page icon for the account using the console.
  2. Choose User Settings.
  3. Scroll down and select Update Download Progress.
  4. Wait for the system to reconnect and check whether the download begins or advances.

This refresh is intended for downloads that do not start, are paused, or appear stuck. It does not repair an incomplete purchase or create storage that is not available.

  • Battle-Tested Durability: Engineered for long sessions and intense environments. Waterproof, shockproof, temperature-resistant, X-ray safe — designed to withstand accidental drops, outdoor use, and frequent device swapping.
  • Actual Capacity: Storage may be smaller than the labeled capacity because manufacturers use the decimal system (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes) , operating systems display storage using the binary system (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes). This is a normal industry practice and does not affect performance.

Restart if progress still does not move

If the progress remains unchanged, restart the Switch. After it powers back on, wait for it to reconnect online and check the download again. Avoid repeatedly opening the game or another network-heavy application while you are testing the download.

Use sleep mode as a later attempt

Nintendo’s missing-game guidance offers an additional wait-based step when ordinary checks have not started the download. Place the console in its dock, or connect AC power directly to a Switch Lite, then put the system into sleep mode for up to two hours. This gives the download process time to begin without another game competing for the connection.

3. Check the internet connection without confusing it with an account problem

A purchase can be valid while a weak or interrupted connection prevents its data from arriving. Confirm that the Switch shows an active internet connection and that other online features can connect. If the connection repeatedly drops, restore the network connection before using Update Download Progress again.

  • Keep the console within reliable range of the wireless network while testing.
  • Do not close the console’s network connection immediately after starting a download.
  • After restoring connectivity, return to HOME and check the existing download rather than starting a second purchase.
  • If Nintendo’s service-status page reports an outage, wait for service to return before treating a normal delay as a console fault.

The exact download duration depends on the title, connection, and service conditions. Nintendo’s official troubleshooting pages do not publish a universal download-time estimate or a failure-rate statistic, so a specific number of minutes cannot be used as a reliable pass/fail rule.

4. Check available storage before changing accounts

Use the game’s own requirement

Nintendo states: “Storage requirements vary by game.” Check the title’s eShop listing or physical packaging for the required space, then compare it with the free space shown on the Switch. A download can fail even when the purchase and network connection are both valid if the destination storage cannot hold the software and its required data.

Know where different data can live

Software data, updates, downloadable content, and screenshots can be stored in system memory or on a compatible microSD card. Save data remains in system memory and cannot be saved or copied to a microSD card. Moving or expanding software storage therefore does not move a game’s save data.

  • The official licensed microSD card for Nintendo Switch Systems
  • Add games fast with write speeds up to 90MB/s (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending upon host device interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB = 1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Start playing fast with read speeds up to 100MB/s (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending upon host device interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB = 1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Store an entire game collection, plus screenshots and videos, with up to 64GB of additional memory (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less)

Free space safely

When the console is short on space, archive or delete unused software and data from the system’s data-management options, then retry the download. Archiving removes the software data while keeping the title available for downloading again; deleting data removes the local software data as well. Check the on-screen confirmation carefully before removing anything you still need.

Expand with a compatible microSD card

A compatible microSD card can expand available memory when storage is the confirmed cause. Check that the card works with your Switch model and that its capacity meets the game’s requirement. Do not purchase a card as a remedy for an unchanged eShop balance, an outage, an account mismatch, or a stalled network connection; extra storage cannot fix those conditions.

5. Load an owned game or DLC through Virtual Game Cards

What “Purchased” actually tells you

When eShop shows Purchased, the Nintendo Account currently browsing already owns the game or downloadable content. The label confirms ownership; it does not prove that the software is installed on this console or that its Virtual Game Card is loaded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check HOME and All Software first

Look across the HOME menu and open All Software. The title may already be installed but located away from the first HOME row. If it is not present, use the Virtual Game Card flow for the purchasing user.

Load the card on this system

  1. Open Virtual Game Cards from the HOME menu.
  2. Select the user who made the purchase.
  3. Select the game or DLC.
  4. Choose Load on This System.
  5. Wait for the system to complete the loading or download process, then check HOME and All Software again.

Nintendo’s current US troubleshooting guidance directs users to Virtual Game Cards for this situation. Nintendo’s Japanese support account information says that, beginning April 30, 2025, redownloads of purchased games and DLC moved from eShop to Virtual Game Cards on HOME. Older instructions that tell you to look for the previous eShop redownload menu may therefore no longer match the current interface.

Check for a hidden Virtual Game Card

If the expected item is not listed, inspect the hidden-card or hidden-software area and unhide it if necessary. Nintendo’s instructions also describe restoring the Virtual Game Cards option from the eShop details page when that option has been hidden. After restoring visibility, return to HOME, select the purchasing user, and look for the item again.

  • EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].

When the card is still missing

If the game or DLC remains absent from Virtual Game Cards after you have checked hidden cards and confirmed the purchasing account, use Nintendo’s missing digital content support route. At that point the problem is no longer explained by a normal paused download or a full storage device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Keep the account and console roles straight

Use the same Nintendo Account for the ownership check and the Virtual Game Card selection. A different user on the console may be able to use software that has been loaded appropriately, but browsing eShop with an account that did not make the purchase can make an owned item appear unavailable. Confirm the account before interpreting a missing title as a failed transaction.

If the balance was charged but the item does not appear for the purchasing user, record that distinction for support. It is more useful than simply reporting that “the download failed,” because it identifies a completed-payment and ownership-visibility problem.

7. A complete recovery sequence

Use this order when you want one uninterrupted procedure instead of choosing individual fixes.

  1. Open eShop with the account that made the purchase and check whether its balance changed.
  2. Check Nintendo’s service-status page for an outage or maintenance.
  3. Look at HOME for a download icon, the title, or All Software.
  4. Confirm that the Switch is online and close any running software.
  5. Open the user page, choose User Settings, and select Update Download Progress.
  6. If the bar still does not move, restart the console and wait for it to reconnect.
  7. Compare free space with the title’s listed requirement; archive or delete unused software/data if necessary.
  8. If the eShop says Purchased but the title is absent, open Virtual Game Cards, choose the purchasing user and item, and select Load on This System.
  9. Check hidden Virtual Game Cards or hidden software if the item is not listed.
  10. For a final wait-based attempt, dock the Switch, or connect AC power to a Switch Lite, and use sleep mode for up to two hours.
  11. Contact Nintendo support if the charged purchase is still missing, the card cannot be found, or an error persists.

8. What to record before contacting Nintendo

Nintendo’s support portal provides chat, text/SMS, help-ticket, and phone contact options. Prepare concise details so the representative can distinguish a payment, account, storage, and download issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The Nintendo Account used to make and view the purchase.
  • Whether the eShop balance changed or another payment method was charged.
  • The game or DLC name and whether a download icon appears.
  • What appears under HOME, All Software, and Virtual Game Cards.
  • Whether you checked hidden cards or hidden software.
  • The available system-memory and microSD space.
  • Your Switch model, such as Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED.
  • Any exact error code or message, including when it appeared.
  • Whether Nintendo service status showed maintenance or an outage.

Do not promise yourself a refund or assume that support will restore an order. The appropriate outcome depends on Nintendo’s account and transaction review; your role is to provide the records that let support investigate it.

9. Common wrong turns

Buying the game again

If the first account was charged or eShop already says Purchased, a second purchase does not solve a missing download. Verify ownership and Virtual Game Card status first.

Adding storage before checking the requirement

A microSD card helps only when the destination lacks room. It cannot restore a failed transaction, bypass an outage, repair a wireless connection, or make content bought by another account appear.

Leaving a game open while waiting

Some software pauses downloads while it is running. Save and close it before refreshing progress.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Following obsolete eShop redownload instructions

Since April 30, 2025, Nintendo’s documented redownload path uses Virtual Game Cards on HOME. Use the current HOME flow instead of assuming an older eShop menu is still present.

Deleting save data to create room

Save data is stored in system memory and is separate from software storage. Manage unused software or other removable data; do not delete a save merely because a game will not download.

10. Quick decision checklist

  • Balance unchanged: treat the order as incomplete and verify the account and service status.
  • Balance charged, icon present: keep the console online, close software, refresh progress, and restart if needed.
  • Storage warning: compare the title’s requirement with free space, then archive/delete or add compatible microSD storage.
  • “Purchased” but no icon: check HOME and All Software, then load the Virtual Game Card for the purchasing user.
  • Missing Virtual Game Card: inspect hidden cards/software and escalate through Nintendo support if it remains absent.
