Nintendo Switch eShop Country and Region Settings Explained

Your Nintendo Switch eShop storefront is determined by the country/region on the Nintendo Account linked to the Switch user who opens it. To use a different country’s storefront, change that Nintendo Account’s country/region to the target market, then open the eShop with the linked user. The change affects the games, downloadable content (DLC), subscriptions, payment options and prepaid codes you can see or redeem. Because balances and purchases stay attached to that account and Nintendo does not refund unusable cross-region purchases, check the game’s sales region and the code’s market before paying.

What the Nintendo Switch eShop country setting controls

Nintendo ties an eShop storefront to two things: a Nintendo Account and the Switch user linked to that account. Nintendo Support lists both as requirements for eShop access and says the account’s country/region must match the market whose storefront you want to use. A Nintendo Support example for Hong Kong tells users to set the Nintendo Account country/region to Hong Kong before opening that eShop.

The country/region setting is therefore more than a language preference. It determines the digital catalog and the market in which Nintendo-issued redemption products are valid. Availability can differ by market for:

  • Downloadable games and editions
  • DLC, expansion passes and other add-on content
  • Demos and applications
  • Nintendo Switch Online plans or related offers
  • Prepaid download codes and eShop cards
  • Supported payment methods and currencies

Changing the setting does not create a second copy of your account. Your balance, purchase history and digital licenses remain associated with the same Nintendo Account.

How to change the country or region on your Nintendo Account

Make the change on the Nintendo Account website, not from the eShop catalog itself. The exact wording can vary slightly by account type or device, but the path is the account-information area where your profile’s country/region is displayed.

  1. Sign in to the Nintendo Account that is linked to the Switch user you plan to use.
  2. Open User Information (or the equivalent profile-information page).
  3. Find Country/region of residence and select the market you need.
  4. Review the account information and confirm the change.
  5. On the Switch, select the user linked to that Nintendo Account and launch Nintendo eShop.
  6. Open Account Information in the eShop and verify the displayed country, currency, balance and payment options before buying.

If the storefront still shows the old market, close the eShop, restart the console and open it again with the correct user. Do not assume that changing the console’s system region, language or time zone changes the eShop; the storefront follows the Nintendo Account country/region.

Can you access another country’s eShop?

Yes, when your Nintendo Account is set to that country/region and the account is linked to a Switch user. The practical choice is whether to change the country on an existing account or use a separate Nintendo Account for another market.

Changing an existing account

One account keeps its balance, purchase history and digital purchases together. That continuity is useful if you want one library and one set of account controls, but it also means the same account carries the consequences of every regional purchase. Check the account’s balance and payment details before switching markets, and verify that a purchase is intended for the current storefront.

Using a separate account

A Switch can have multiple users, each linked to a Nintendo Account. A user linked to an account set to another country can open that market’s eShop. Balances and purchases are not shared between separate Nintendo Accounts, however, so money added to one account cannot be combined with or spent from another. Purchase history also cannot be moved between accounts.

What “access” does not mean

Seeing a foreign catalog does not guarantee that every payment method, code or add-on will work for you. Catalog availability, payment acceptance, redemption rules and game/DLC compatibility are separate questions. Treat the storefront switch as a way to view and buy from that market, not as a promise that products from different markets are interchangeable.

Country/region, payment methods and prepaid cards

Nintendo’s account-information area is where you manage your balance, payment cards, PayPal, Nintendo Switch Online settings and other purchase controls. Keep the account country/region, payment method and prepaid code market aligned.

Purchase method What to verify Risk if it does not match
Credit or debit card Whether the card is accepted for the selected eShop market and billed in its currency The payment can be declined or require a different billing setup
PayPal Whether PayPal is offered for that country/region and configured for the account The option may not appear or the transaction may fail
eShop card or download code The code was issued for the same country/region as the Nintendo Account The code may not redeem
Existing balance The balance shown in eShop Account Information before you change markets You may be unable to use it as expected in another storefront; added funds are non-refundable

Nintendo specifically says Japanese download and prepaid card numbers require the Nintendo Account country/region to be Japan. The safe rule is simple: buy a card issued for the same country/region shown on the account at the time of redemption. A card from another market is not a workaround for a mismatched account.

When buying a code from any retailer, select the country/region that matches the Nintendo Account, not merely the country where you currently live or the language printed on the box. Keep the receipt and code details until redemption succeeds.

Will DLC work if the game is from another region?

Nintendo’s compatibility warning is direct: the game and its additional content should be sold for the same country. Software and add-on content sold in different countries may not work together, and Nintendo does not accept returns or refunds when a purchase cannot be used.

Base game sales region DLC eShop region Support status
Japan Japan Same-market combination; the supported choice
Hong Kong Hong Kong Same-market combination; the tested choice in Nintendo’s Hong Kong guidance
North America North America Same-market combination; verify the exact edition before purchase
One market A different market May not work; Nintendo describes cross-country combinations as unsupported or unconfirmed

Nintendo’s Splatoon 2 example

Nintendo gives a concrete warning: an overseas version of Splatoon 2 may not work with Splatoon 2 additional content bought from the Japanese Nintendo eShop. The game title alone is not enough to establish compatibility; the sales country and edition matter.

Hong Kong guidance

Nintendo’s Hong Kong support documentation treats Hong Kong-market software paired with Hong Kong eShop add-on content as the tested combination. Cross-region pairings are described as unconfirmed and unsupported. If you cannot verify that the base game and DLC share a sales region, do not buy the add-on expecting Nintendo to correct the mismatch later.

  • Digital Card balances can be shared across Nintendo Switch, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family of systems, but may only be used on a single Nintendo eShop account.

How to check before buying DLC

  • Check the game’s box, download listing or product information for its sales market.
  • Open the DLC listing in the eShop that corresponds to that market.
  • Confirm that the product is an add-on for the same game edition, not just a similarly named release.
  • Only then complete payment, because Nintendo documents no refund when a cross-region purchase cannot be used.

What happens to your balance when you change regions?

Your balance belongs to the Nintendo Account, not to the physical Switch and not to all users on the console. The same account can carry its balance to another console when you link that account there. Balances held by different Nintendo Accounts cannot be combined.

Before changing a country/region, open eShop Account Information and record the displayed balance and recent transactions. Consider the balance committed to that account, rather than assuming it will merge with another user’s funds. Nintendo states that added balance and digital purchases are non-refundable, so do not add money until the account market and intended purchase are confirmed.

Changing the country/region also does not move purchase history to a different account. If you create or use another account for a second market, its library and balance remain separate from the first account.

A safe workflow for regional purchases

Use this sequence whenever you are considering a foreign eShop, game or code:

  1. Check the account. Sign in to Nintendo Account settings and read the current country/region. Confirm that it is the account linked to the Switch user who will download or play the software.
  2. Identify the game’s sales market. Use the physical packaging or the original digital listing. Do not infer the market from the console’s language.
  3. Match the DLC market. Select add-on content from the same country/region as the base game. If Nintendo labels the combination unconfirmed, treat it as incompatible for purchasing purposes.
  4. Match the code market. For prepaid cards and download codes, buy the country/region issued for the account. Japanese codes, for example, require Japan as the account setting.
  5. Check payment and balance. In eShop Account Information, confirm the currency, balance and available payment method before authorizing a transaction.
  6. Review the final listing. Confirm the title, edition, language or content description and country/region one last time.
  7. Redeem and download on the intended user. Use the linked account, then keep the receipt and transaction record.

Regional options compared

Decision area What to compare Why it matters
Catalog availability Games, DLC, demos and subscriptions listed in each storefront A title offered in one market may be absent or differently packaged in another
Payment and redemption Local cards, PayPal support, currency and prepaid-code rules A visible product is not useful if your payment method or code is rejected
Compatibility Base-game sales region versus add-on sales region Cross-region DLC may fail to work and may not be refundable
Account continuity One account versus separate accounts for different markets Balance, purchase history and digital purchases stay with their original account
Consumer risk Refund terms and confidence in the region match Nintendo documents non-refundable added balance and digital purchases

Common mistakes and how to recover

Redeeming a card from the wrong country

Stop before repeatedly entering the code. Check the Nintendo Account country/region and the market printed or specified for the card. If they differ, the code may not redeem. Do not buy another code until the account and card markets match.

Buying DLC for an imported game

Find the original game’s sales region and compare it with the DLC listing. If they differ, assume the combination is unsupported unless Nintendo explicitly confirms it. Nintendo says it does not refund a purchase that cannot be used.

Opening the eShop with the wrong user

Close the eShop and reopen it with the Switch user linked to the Nintendo Account whose country/region you checked. Each user’s storefront follows that user’s linked account.

Expecting funds to follow a different account

They will not merge automatically. Nintendo keeps balances and purchase histories account-specific. Continue using the original account for its funds and purchases, or accept that a separate regional account starts with its own balance and library.

Assuming a console setting changed the storefront

The system language, time zone and hardware location do not replace the Nintendo Account country/region. Return to account settings, verify the country/region, then reopen eShop.

Nintendo’s account and refund rules in plain language

Nintendo Support Singapore states: “When you link a Nintendo Account to a user on the Nintendo Switch, you can use features that require the Internet, such as the Nintendo eShop and online play.” That linkage is the foundation for regional storefront access.

The same account controls your balance, payment cards, PayPal and Nintendo Switch Online settings. Nintendo’s published guidance also says added balance and digital purchases are non-refundable, and purchase history cannot be transferred between accounts. Those rules make region matching a pre-purchase check, not a troubleshooting step after payment.
