No—the global Nintendo Switch App did not disappear on March 31, 2026. Nintendo renamed the former Nintendo Switch Online app in late May 2025, and its support records show releases on March 17 and March 30, 2026. The March 31 deadline applied to Nintendo Switch eShop sales in China, not to the worldwide smartphone app.
What happened to the Nintendo Switch app?
Nintendo changed the app’s name from Nintendo Switch Online to Nintendo Switch App in late May 2025. Existing users could receive the rename through an automatic update or install it manually. Nintendo also made some app functions available without a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership.

The app remained an active service around the date in the headline. Nintendo Japan’s version history lists version 3.3.0 on March 17, 2026, followed by version 3.3.1 on March 30, 2026. Those releases are direct evidence that the smartphone app was still being maintained immediately before March 31.

What the app does now
- Shows which friends are online.
- Lets users add friends with QR codes.
- Displays screenshots and videos captured on Nintendo Switch 2.
- Allows captured media to be shared on social networks.
- Provides game-specific services for supported games.
Availability of individual features can depend on the game, console generation and Nintendo account region. The March 31 date did not represent a worldwide app deletion or a general shutdown of these functions.

What March 31, 2026 actually referred to
The clearest official March 31 cutoff concerned the China-market Nintendo Switch eShop. Tencent’s Nintendo Switch China notice set 22:00 on March 31, 2026 as the end of eShop sales. That is a regional digital-store deadline, not an app-store removal date for users worldwide.
China-market services had a separate, later cutoff. Downloads, download-code redemption and other online services were scheduled to continue until 22:00 on May 15, 2026. Since both dates have now passed, users affected by the China-market policy should treat the notice as a completed service transition rather than as evidence about the global smartphone app.

Why the rumor is easy to misunderstand
Several Nintendo service announcements use similar dates and terms, but they concern different products. A regional eShop sales cutoff can be mistaken for the retirement of an app with a similar Nintendo Switch name. The former Nintendo Switch Online app also changed branding in 2025, which makes searches for the old name more likely to surface outdated headlines.

There is another source of confusion: Nintendo’s older Wii U and Nintendo 3DS FAQ says eShop purchases ended on March 27, 2023, while redownloading purchased software and receiving updates continued for the foreseeable future. That policy applies to those legacy platforms. It does not announce a Nintendo Switch App shutdown.

What users should do
If you use the app outside China
- Open your phone’s app store and search for Nintendo Switch App, not only the former Nintendo Switch Online name.
- Install any pending update. The app’s March 2026 version history shows that Nintendo continued publishing updates after the rename.
- Sign in with the Nintendo Account linked to your console if the app requests authentication.
- Check the individual game’s requirements before relying on a game-specific feature; support is limited to compatible titles.
There is no evidence in the cited Nintendo information that users worldwide needed to download the app before March 31, 2026, to preserve access.
If you use a China-market Nintendo Switch
The relevant issue was the regional eShop schedule, not the global app. The sales cutoff was 22:00 on March 31, 2026, and the later service cutoff was 22:00 on May 15, 2026. Any purchase, code-redemption or download decision needed to be checked against that China-market notice and its stated times.

What happened to Gold Points?
Nintendo ended the ability to earn My Nintendo Gold Points at 9:30 p.m. PDT on March 24, 2025. That was a separate rewards-policy change, more than a year before the China eShop sales deadline. Nintendo said points already earned remained usable according to their normal validity rules, so the end of earning did not by itself erase existing balances.
Bottom line on the March 31 claim
The headline combines unrelated Nintendo dates. The worldwide smartphone app was renamed Nintendo Switch App in May 2025 and was still receiving updates in March 2026. March 31, 2026 marked the end of Nintendo Switch eShop sales in China, while downloads and other listed China-market online services had a May 15, 2026 cutoff. The Gold Point earning deadline was earlier, on March 24, 2025.
