Short answer: Nintendo’s Zelda 40th Anniversary case is a slim travel case with a screen protector, not an ergonomic grip shell. A full-size installed grip usually makes the console too wide or deep for that case’s snug interior. Choose the Nintendo case for compact transport and game-card storage; choose a grip case for comfort during handheld play. If you want both, measure the installed console and confirm the grip maker’s case-compatibility list before buying.
What you are actually comparing
The two products solve different problems. The Nintendo Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector – The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition is a travel enclosure. Nintendo describes decorative Zelda artwork and an included screen protector, with a listed release date of October 29, 2026 and an MSRP of 3,980 yen including tax (Nintendo, 2026). It surrounds the console when you put it in a bag and provides organized storage for games and small accessories.

A grip case is an installed shell. It remains attached while you play and adds contoured sides or handles to make the handheld easier to hold. The Genki Attack Vector review examined separate covers for the Switch 2 console and Joy-Con 2 controllers, a rubber interior patch for a snug fit, and openings that leave the stand, ports and buttons usable (TechRadar, 2026). That design prioritizes playing comfort rather than the smallest possible travel footprint.

Will a grip case fit inside the official Nintendo Zelda case?
Do not assume that it will. Nintendo’s carrying-case instructions specify storing the Switch 2 with Joy-Con 2 attached, and Nintendo Life describes the interior as a snug fit designed around the unmodified console. The same report says Nintendo was not expecting an additional case such as Genki Attack Vector to be installed. That is strong evidence against treating the official case as universally grip-compatible.
Nintendo lists the Switch 2 at approximately 4.5 inches tall × 10.7 inches wide × 0.55 inches thick with Joy-Con 2 attached. The control-stick tips and ZL/ZR triggers bring maximum thickness to about 1.2 inches (Nintendo technical specifications). Those figures describe the console itself, not the larger envelope created by a grip.
A thin protective skin or shell could fit if it adds very little to the measured width and depth. A substantial ergonomic grip normally extends the sides and back enough to press against the case’s walls or zipper. Even when the console can be forced inside, pressure on sticks, triggers or the zipper is a warning that the combination is not a safe long-term fit.

Measure the installed console before ordering
- Attach the grip exactly as it will be used, including its console cover and any Joy-Con covers.
- Measure the complete assembly at its widest point, including side handles, shoulder-button clearance and stick height.
- Measure its greatest front-to-back depth rather than relying on the shell’s advertised thickness. Trigger guards and rear contours often create the maximum.
- Compare those measurements with the grip-compatible case’s published internal dimensions. External dimensions are not usable interior space.
- Check the grip manufacturer’s compatibility notes for the exact travel case. A statement that a shell fits the Switch 2 does not mean it fits a particular case.
If a seller provides no internal dimensions or compatibility statement, treat the pairing as unverified. The official Nintendo case is documented as snug around a console without an added grip, so it is the least forgiving option for experimentation.

The practical choice is therefore between removing a travel case before playing and removing a grip before storage. If you frequently switch between handheld and docked or tabletop play, a removable travel case is less disruptive. If long handheld sessions cause hand fatigue, keeping a grip installed may be worth giving up the official case’s slim fit.

Protection: which one protects the Switch 2 better?
Neither product has a published standardized drop-test score in the cited material, so there is no evidence-based numeric winner. Their protection applies in different situations.
Protection during transport
The Nintendo case encloses the console and prevents contact with other items in a backpack or suitcase. Its outer shell is intended to resist travel scratches and everyday impacts, while the included screen protector addresses direct screen contact. The case stores the console with Joy-Con 2 attached, so you do not need to remove the controllers for each trip. Nintendo’s materials do not claim a certified drop rating; avoid interpreting the case as a guarantee against high falls or crushing loads.

A grip shell covers the console and controller surfaces continuously. Cut-outs preserve access to the stand, ports and buttons, and the reviewed Attack Vector design uses a rubber interior patch to hold the hardware securely (TechRadar, 2026). TechRadar characterizes that coverage as sufficient for scratches and ordinary handling, but it does not provide a standardized impact test. The shell can reduce scuffs from handling and make an accidental slip less likely by improving your hold; it is not proof against a serious drop.
Using both layers
Two layers can provide transport coverage plus an attached playing shell only when the dimensions work. Do not compress a grip into the Nintendo case to obtain “extra protection.” Pressure can deform the grip, stress the zipper and transfer force to sticks or triggers. A roomier case specifically designed for installed grips is the safer two-layer arrangement.
Portability, storage and capacity
TechRadar measured the official Nintendo case at 13.4 × 5.6 × 1.7 inches (340 × 142 × 42 millimeters) and reported storage for the Switch 2 with Joy-Con 2 attached, six game cartridges and small accessories such as Joy-Con straps (TechRadar, 2025). Its slim profile is suitable for placing inside a larger bag rather than carrying a bulky dedicated case.

A grip shell remains on the console and enlarges the handheld footprint. That extra width can make the console more comfortable but reduces the likelihood of fitting a slim sleeve or travel case. It also consumes interior room that might otherwise hold cables or accessories. The trade-off is straightforward: every millimeter added for hand support is space that a travel case must provide.

PowerA’s Zelda-themed Hyrule Crest protection case is listed at 11.85 × 6.85 × 2.09 inches (30.1 × 17.4 × 5.3 centimeters). Its greater external depth indicates a roomier protection-case format than Nintendo’s slim model. That makes it a candidate for carrying accessories or a thicker console setup, but the product listing does not promise compatibility with every installed grip. Confirm the usable interior dimensions before relying on it for a particular shell.
Do not compare the external numbers of two cases as if they were interior measurements. Padding, molded pockets and zipper construction consume space, and a case that is deeper outside may still have a narrow console compartment.
Keeping Zelda artwork visible while using a grip
The official Nintendo case displays its Zelda design while the console is stored, not while the grip is attached during play. If the goal is to see Zelda styling in your hands, select a grip with an exposed or printed rear panel, or use a Zelda-themed grip-compatible travel case for transport. A plain grip inside the official case leaves the branding on the case exterior and hides it as soon as you remove the console.
Check whether a themed shell covers the Nintendo artwork on the console or Joy-Con 2. Decorative overlays can interfere with rubber contact pads or leave raised edges that catch on a case liner. The visual design should never take priority over unobstructed vents, ports, controls or the stand.

Three practical setups
Setup 1: Official case only
Use the Switch 2 without an installed grip, apply the included screen protector, and store the console with Joy-Con 2 attached. This is the most predictable arrangement for Nintendo’s case and preserves its game-card and strap storage. It is appropriate when you value a compact bag load and only occasionally play handheld for long periods.
Setup 2: Grip for play, official case for travel
Remove the grip before placing the console in the Nintendo case. This keeps the case within its intended envelope but adds a routine: detach the shell, store it separately, and reinstall it before playing. Protect the detached grip from bending or crushing in the same bag. This setup is workable for a thin shell, but it is less convenient than a genuinely compatible single-case solution.
Setup 3: Grip-compatible travel case
Leave the grip installed and use a deeper case whose interior dimensions are confirmed for it. This is the simplest daily workflow for people who play handheld often. You may lose the Nintendo case’s exact six-card layout or slim profile, so check the replacement case’s pockets and accessory capacity before buying.

- Identify the product type: confirm whether the listing is a carrying case, a grip shell, or a bundle containing both. “Protective case” is not a guarantee of ergonomic handles.
- Confirm the console generation: Switch 2 dimensions and Joy-Con 2 attachment differ from earlier Switch hardware. A case for the original Switch is not evidence of Switch 2 fit.
- Measure the complete setup: include grips, controller covers, stick caps, trigger guards and any screen protector edge.
- Look for internal measurements: request them when only external dimensions are published.
- Check access points: verify that the grip leaves the stand, charging port, game-card slot, volume controls and power button usable.
- Inspect pressure points: the zipper should close without force, and the sticks and ZL/ZR triggers should not press against the lining.
- Plan accessory storage: the Nintendo case holds six cartridges and small items; a grip-compatible case may trade that organization for extra depth.
- Verify availability and regional pricing: Nintendo’s 3,980-yen MSRP includes tax and applies to the announced Japanese product; local prices and stock can differ, especially before the October 29, 2026 release.
Common fit problems and what to do
The zipper closes only when you push down
Stop using that combination. Remove the grip and retest the case with the console alone. If the unmodified console fits normally, the grip exceeds the case’s intended envelope; use a grip-compatible case rather than forcing the zipper.

Contact at the control-stick tips or ZL/ZR protrusions can transmit pressure during transport. Recheck maximum thickness at those points and choose a case with additional clearance.

The console enters the case but accessories no longer fit
A grip may occupy the space intended for straps or cartridges. Count the accessories you actually carry and select a case with separate pockets or a deeper compartment instead of overloading the console pocket.
The grip blocks the stand or ports
Do not modify the shell or case. Use a grip with documented cut-outs; the reviewed Attack Vector design specifically preserves the stand, ports and buttons. A shell that obstructs charging or ventilation is incompatible for practical use even if it physically fits.
Bottom line for different buyers
Buy the official Nintendo Zelda case if your priority is a compact, Zelda-branded travel enclosure, a supplied screen protector, six game-card slots and storage for the Switch 2 with Joy-Con 2 attached. Treat its slim, snug fit as intended for the console without a substantial added shell.
Buy an installed grip if handheld comfort is the deciding factor. Expect extra bulk and plan on a case designed around that larger profile. For Zelda styling plus more accessory room, investigate a deeper Zelda travel case such as the Hyrule Crest model, but verify the interior against your exact grip.
The safest way to combine a grip and travel protection is not to guess from photographs: measure the assembled console, obtain internal case dimensions and confirm compatibility in writing from the manufacturer or seller.
