For Zelda players, Nintendo Switch 2 does not replace the original games; it adds optional Switch 2 Editions for Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. On Nintendo’s descriptions, those editions bring improved image quality or smoother performance, faster loading, an extra save file and the ZELDA NOTES companion-app feature. They require a Nintendo Switch 2 and the matching base game.

Nintendo’s current US listing accessed in 2026 shows the Tears of the Kingdom Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack at $9.99. Active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members can access both Zelda upgrade packs at no additional charge under Nintendo’s stated terms. Prices, membership rules and availability can vary by country, so treat the US figure as a dated regional example rather than a worldwide price.

At a glance: original Switch versus Switch 2 Editions

Area Original Switch version Switch 2 Edition
Hardware Runs on the original Nintendo Switch family of systems. Requires Nintendo Switch 2; Nintendo describes these editions as Switch 2-only.
Base game The original Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom release. Requires ownership of the corresponding base game plus the matching upgrade entitlement.
Visuals and performance The features of the original release. Breath of the Wild: higher definition, smoother visuals and HDR. Tears of the Kingdom: smoother frame rates, enhanced resolution and textures.
Loading Original loading behavior. Faster loading is part of Nintendo’s description for both editions.
Saves Your existing original-version save data. Two save files. The second save created in the Switch 2 Edition cannot be transferred back to the original Switch version.
ZELDA NOTES Not included as an original-game feature. Included exclusively with the Zelda Switch 2 Editions through the Nintendo Switch app for smart devices.
Price example Base-game ownership is separate from any Switch 2 upgrade. Tears of the Kingdom upgrade pack: $9.99 on Nintendo’s US listing accessed in 2026; Expansion Pack members may receive access at no additional charge under Nintendo’s terms.

The practical distinction is therefore not “a new Zelda game versus an old one.” It is the same adventure with a separate Switch 2 Edition layer, provided you have the right hardware and own the matching game.

What changes in Breath of the Wild

Higher-definition, smoother presentation

Nintendo describes the Breath of the Wild Switch 2 Edition as having higher definition and smoother visuals. That is a qualitative product description, not a published benchmark. Nintendo’s cited information does not specify a target resolution, frame rate or measured loading-time reduction, so there is no official number to use when estimating the difference.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

HDR support

HDR support is specifically listed for the Breath of the Wild Switch 2 Edition. Whether you see the full benefit depends on using a compatible display and configuring that display correctly. HDR is an output feature; it does not mean every television or handheld viewing condition will show identical results.

Faster loading and a second save

The edition adds faster loading and gives the game two save files. You can continue with existing save data or use the additional file for a separate adventure. Nintendo’s important warning is that the second save created in the Switch 2 Edition cannot be transferred to the original Nintendo Switch version. That makes the extra slot useful for experimentation on Switch 2, but it is not a reversible bridge to the older edition.

ZELDA NOTES

Breath of the Wild Switch 2 Edition owners also receive ZELDA NOTES, a companion feature accessed through the Nintendo Switch app on a smart device. Nintendo describes voiced navigation and character insights. It is not a menu that runs solely on the console: a compatible smart device and a persistent internet connection are required.

What changes in Tears of the Kingdom

Smoother frame rates

Nintendo’s description for the Tears of the Kingdom Switch 2 Edition promises smoother frame rates. Nintendo does not publish a numeric frame-rate target on the cited product information, and no independent measurement is established here. The defensible expectation is a smoother presentation than Nintendo’s original release description, not a guaranteed number in every scene or display mode.

Resolution and texture improvements

The edition is also described as having enhanced resolution and textures. Nintendo’s own wording is: “Travel across Hyrule with smoother framerates, faster load times, and enhanced resolution and textures.” That sentence is marketing copy describing the product’s intended improvements, not a laboratory result. It does not establish a specific pixel count, texture setting or universal visual outcome.

Loading, saves and ZELDA NOTES

Faster loading, two save files and ZELDA NOTES are part of the Tears of the Kingdom Switch 2 Edition feature set as well. The same save limitation applies: a second save made in the Switch 2 Edition cannot be moved back to the original Switch version. ZELDA NOTES likewise requires the Nintendo Switch app, a compatible smart device and persistent internet access.

What you must own or buy

A Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo identifies both Zelda Switch 2 Editions as playable only on Nintendo Switch 2. The console is therefore a requirement for the enhancements, not merely an optional accessory. Buying the console should not be treated as buying either Zelda base game; Nintendo’s materials separate the hardware, the original game and the upgrade entitlement.

The matching Zelda base game

Each upgrade pack is tied to its corresponding game. The Breath of the Wild upgrade requires Breath of the Wild; the Tears of the Kingdom upgrade requires Tears of the Kingdom. Nintendo’s UK support FAQ explicitly says that you must own the original game to use its Switch 2 upgrade pack. The upgrade is consequently an add-on path for owners, not a standalone replacement for purchasing the base title.

The matching upgrade pack or membership entitlement

If you own the game but do not have an eligible membership, you need the corresponding paid upgrade pack. If you have Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, Nintendo’s US store pages say active members can access both Zelda upgrade packs at no additional charge under Nintendo’s terms. Because the offer is tied to membership status and regional policies, verify the entitlement shown by your local Nintendo store before relying on it.

Upgrade cost and membership conditions

What the US price tells you

Nintendo’s US store listing accessed in 2026 lists the Tears of the Kingdom Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack at $9.99 USD. That is a current listing at the stated access date, not a permanent global price. The cited material does not establish a comparable price for the Breath of the Wild upgrade, so it should not be inferred from the Tears of the Kingdom figure.

Expansion Pack access

The same US store information says active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members can obtain both Zelda upgrade packs at no additional charge, subject to Nintendo’s terms. This does not mean the base games become free, and it does not mean the entitlement survives indefinitely after membership ends.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

UK support terms and the offline window

Nintendo UK’s support FAQ adds a specific condition: an upgrade obtained through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack can be used only while the membership is active. It requires an internet connection to launch, then can be used for up to seven days without an internet connection. Those are UK support terms. Players elsewhere should check their own regional Nintendo guidance rather than assuming the seven-day rule or every activation detail is universal.

Virtual game card treatment

For Tears of the Kingdom, Nintendo describes a separately purchased upgrade pack as a virtual game card under the conditions on its support information. The exact account and console behavior should be confirmed in the store or support instructions presented for your region.

How saves work when moving to Switch 2

Continuing an existing adventure

Nintendo says each Zelda Switch 2 Edition provides two save files, allowing you to continue with existing data or begin a new adventure. The useful scenario is straightforward: preserve your established progress in one file and use the second for a fresh run without deleting the first.

The one-way caveat

The additional save is not fully cross-compatible. Nintendo specifically warns that the second save created in a Switch 2 Edition cannot be transferred to the original Switch version of that game. If you expect to return to an original Switch console, keep that limitation in mind before using the second slot for a playthrough you may want there later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A safe planning rule

  • Treat your existing save as the continuity file.
  • Use the extra Switch 2 slot for a new run, experiments or a different play style.
  • Do not assume that the new slot can be copied back to the original-version software.

What ZELDA NOTES adds

How it is delivered

ZELDA NOTES is exclusive to the Zelda Switch 2 Editions and is delivered through the Nintendo Switch app for smart devices. It is therefore a companion service rather than an on-console-only mode.

What Nintendo says it contains

Nintendo describes voiced navigation and character insights. Those features can provide guidance and context while you play, but the cited information does not establish a complete feature list, language availability or a particular handset model.

What you need to use it

  • A compatible smart device running the Nintendo Switch app.
  • Persistent internet access for the service.
  • A Zelda Switch 2 Edition, since ZELDA NOTES is not part of the original Switch release.

If you normally play offline or do not want to use a phone or tablet alongside the console, the visual, loading and save changes are the parts of the upgrade that matter independently of ZELDA NOTES.

What Nintendo has and has not quantified

Nintendo gives feature-level descriptions rather than a technical benchmark in the cited pages. For Breath of the Wild, that means higher definition, smoother visuals, faster loading and HDR. For Tears of the Kingdom, it means smoother frame rates, faster loading, enhanced resolution and textures. Nintendo does not state numerical resolution targets, frame-rate targets or measured loading times there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters when comparing videos, televisions or player reports. A claim such as “the game runs at exactly a particular frame rate” or “loading is reduced by a specific number of seconds” would go beyond the documented information. The official material supports a qualitative improvement, not a universal performance guarantee for every scene, mode or display.

Can you keep using the original Switch version?

The original games remain the base titles associated with the upgrade packs. The Switch 2 Edition is an option for people who have Nintendo’s newer hardware and the matching game; it is not presented as a requirement to own or play the original release on an original Switch system.

However, the cited compatibility material does not establish every possible game-by-game transfer or ownership scenario. It confirms that the Nintendo Switch app can be used alongside either console and that ZELDA NOTES for these editions is Switch 2-exclusive. It does not justify a blanket claim that every Switch game behaves identically on Switch 2, nor does it spell out every physical-media, account or transfer case.

For a Zelda owner deciding whether to upgrade, separate the questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Do you own the matching base game?
  2. Do you have access to Nintendo Switch 2?
  3. Will you buy the upgrade pack, or are you covered by an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack entitlement?
  4. Do you need the second save to work on an original Switch later?
  5. Do you have a compatible smart device and internet access for ZELDA NOTES?

How to decide if the upgrade is worthwhile

You already own a Zelda game and have Nintendo Switch 2

The upgrade is most directly relevant if you want the edition-specific improvements without buying the base game again. Check your regional store for the matching pack and confirm whether your active Expansion Pack membership supplies access. The additional save and faster-loading presentation are useful even if you are not interested in the companion app.

You own the game but still use the original Switch

The documented enhancements are tied to Nintendo Switch 2, so buying an upgrade pack alone does not turn the original console into the Switch 2 Edition system. You can continue using the original game on the hardware you already have, then evaluate the console and upgrade costs together if you later move to Switch 2.

You are buying Zelda for the first time

Budget for the base game first. The upgrade pack is not a substitute for that purchase, and Nintendo’s $9.99 figure applies specifically to the Tears of the Kingdom upgrade listing in the US at the stated date. A buyer in another region should use the local eShop price and membership terms.

You want a second playthrough but may return to original hardware

Use the original save for progress you need to preserve across your established setup. The new Switch 2 save is convenient for a separate adventure, but Nintendo’s warning means you should not plan on transferring that second file back to the original Switch version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Questions the comparison does not answer

Nintendo’s cited pages do not publish a precise resolution mode, a guaranteed frame-rate number, a measured loading benchmark, a complete list of compatible smart devices or a universal set of cross-console transfer rules. Those details may depend on later support documentation, regional software versions or hardware configuration. Until Nintendo specifies them, the reliable comparison is the feature list and the ownership conditions documented above.
